Aria walked quickly through the streets, her laptop bag slung over her shoulder. The rain had stopped, leaving the pavement slick and glistening under the streetlights. She had planned to review the gala photos in peace, but a sense of unease clung to her like a second skin.
Her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps behind her. She froze and glanced over her shoulder. A man in a dark coat followed, keeping just enough distance to remain unnoticed.
Her pulse spiked. This felt different from before. This was deliberate.
“Aria,” a familiar voice called softly from behind.
She turned to see him. The stranger. Kael.
“You’re being followed,” he said calmly, eyes scanning the street. His presence felt like a shield, and her chest loosened slightly.
“How did you...?” she began, but he cut her off with a raised hand.
“No time,” he said, taking her hand and guiding her into an alley. “Stay close and do exactly what I say.”
Her stomach tightened, nerves and excitement mixed in a dangerous cocktail. She allowed him to lead her, trusting instincts she didn’t fully understand.
From the shadows, the man in the coat emerged, quick and silent. Kael moved first, placing himself in front of Aria. The man stopped, hesitating, and Kael’s eyes hardened.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Kael said, his voice low but firm.
The stranger’s lips twisted in a smirk. “And you shouldn’t be so protective of her.”
Before Aria could react, Kael stepped forward, placing a hand lightly but firmly on her back, guiding her out of the alley and back toward the main street.
Her heart was pounding, her chest tight, but she was aware of Kael beside her. Close enough that the warmth of his body brushed hers. Close enough that every brush of skin sent sparks along her nerves.
“You’re safe now,” he murmured once they were in a busier street. His hand lingered near hers, a silent promise she didn’t want to let go of.
She swallowed hard. “Why... why do you care so much?”
His gaze softened. “Because I cannot not care. And because danger doesn’t wait for anyone.”
Aria’s chest tightened. She wanted to say something else, wanted to close the distance between them, but words caught in her throat. Instead, she let herself feel the steady, protective energy radiating from him.
Her mind flashed back to the brief kiss in the coffee shop. A rush of heat surged through her. She wanted more. She wanted him closer. She wanted to trust him with everything she could not yet name.
Kael glanced at her, reading the unspoken in her eyes. He leaned slightly closer, his voice rough and low. “We have to be careful. The moment I let my guard down, someone could hurt you.”
“I trust you,” she whispered, heart hammering.
His lips brushed her temple in a fleeting, intimate gesture, a spark that made her knees weaken again. “Good,” he said softly. “Because I’m not leaving your side.”
The city lights reflected in puddles along the sidewalk as they walked, danger and desire entwined in a tension that neither wanted to break. Aria knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Her life was no longer safe, no longer simple. But with Kael by her side, the thrill of danger was intoxicating. And the fire between them was only beginning to burn.
