Chapter 5: City Lights

483 Words
The city hummed beneath Aria’s apartment window, neon lights painting the walls in pinks and blues. She had spent the afternoon combing through Crowe’s ledger, piecing together threads of illicit deals, hidden accounts, and coded messages. Every line of the record hinted at something bigger, something darker. Her laptop pinged with an alert. A new message, anonymous: “Stop digging. Or the consequences will be personal.” Her stomach twisted. She had expected threats, but not this direct. A soft knock at her door made her jump. Before she could react, Kael appeared in the doorway, his coat damp from the rain. His eyes, intense and unreadable, swept over her apartment. “You shouldn’t be alone right now,” he said, stepping inside without waiting. His presence filled the small space, protective and commanding. “Kael,” she breathed, relief and desire mingling in her chest. “How did you...?” “No time,” he interrupted gently. “They’re watching. Crowe’s people. They’ll know if you’re isolated.” Aria’s pulse raced, but she found herself leaning into him despite the fear. “What do we do?” He moved closer, lowering his voice. “We make sure you’re safe, then we find what they don’t want you to see.” His hand brushed hers as he reached for her laptop. The contact sent a shiver up her arm. Aria swallowed hard, suddenly aware of the nearness of him, the strength in his frame. “I... I don’t want to be protected. I want to help.” “And you will,” he said softly, his voice edged with something deeper. “But not alone. Not tonight.” Her breath caught. His gaze lingered, and the tension between them shifted from protective to intimate. Kael’s hand slid over hers, fingers tracing lightly, almost teasing, almost urgent. She shivered at the brush, heart hammering. He leaned closer, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. “I’ve wanted this since the first moment I saw you,” he murmured, low and intoxicating. Aria’s pulse leapt, desire mingling with adrenaline. Her hands found his chest, feeling the heat beneath his coat. “Kael...” she whispered, her name trembling on her lips. The world outside faded, leaving only the heat of their connection, the danger lurking beyond the walls, and the undeniable craving that had grown between them. “Stay close,” he said, pressing a lingering kiss to her temple before moving to gather her notes. “Every second counts.” Aria watched him, the need to be near him warring with the fear of what might come next. Her instincts screamed caution, but her body and heart betrayed her. Tonight, the danger was real. But so was the fire between them, igniting a bond neither had expected, neither could ignore. And for the first time, Aria realized that some risks were worth taking.
