"Does she know?"
I was still seated on the sofa, giving Caleb a worried look. This wasn't going to end well, was it? We barely made it through this dinner unscathed. Honestly, I think our reputation was going to spread across the packs all over about the lovesick Alpha and his Delta Luna for years.
"Let them, we have bigger worries right now than other packs gossiping." I nodded, hearing the knock on the door, my heart stopping seeing Beta Brad step inside, looking like he didn't know why he had been called to this office, making me feel worse. It was happening right now, wasn't it? Caleb had called for him, so Alpha Victor could collect his mate in peace, who just happened to be this man's wife, no matter how young he looked, with soft eyes and blond wild hair.
"First Beta," I said his title calmly and softly, wanting to slow the punch to the guts with us helping a rival Alpha kidnap his wife. Caleb gave me a look of not agreeing. He didn't like the way it happened, but clearly he and Alpha Victor had been talking all evening with nobody noticing, making me feel worse. Is that why he had looked so tense all night, he was arguing with Victor??
"Yes, and unfortunately, we have the pleasure of breaking the news for this beta that he is not welcome back to his pack, being exiled if I didn't take him on, and that their divorce is already filed and sent." I gasped, not believing a word coming out of my mate's mind. What did they do??
"What is right for the bond, mateship, and not starting a war?" I gulped with him, saying it seriously in my head, making me feel worse for the surfer before us. Yes, he looked like he was a surfer, ha, a smile and light in the pale eyes, very few people of his rank had. "I am so sorry, but…" I didn't know how to tell him. This wasn't me comforting someone's old mother passing on, talking to a child along the corridor, or spending time in the kitchen; this was us, about to break a man's life apart, and he was powerless to fight it!
"Welcome to being a leader, Luna." Caleb's eyes weren't sarcastic; that was the worst. He was serious, always was, goddess. We were really going to do this, right? I felt sick again, glad I wasn't standing like my mate, positioning himself in front of me, making Beta Brad look even more suspicious. He knew something was up with Caleb, crossing his arms and giving him a grave face, while I wanted to cry again. Why did we get this awful job? Why couldn't Alpha Victor just tell him?
"Because he wasn't going to tell him, just kill him, it would have been easier, but since you invited Melody over, you might have saved this man's life." Beta Brad was still watching us, talking silently over the bond, Caleb motionless, and me making sniffles before sighing like he couldn't stand the tension anymore.
"Okay, some beta told me I had to come and talk to the head of the golden moon, but if you are just going to use the bondlink all night, I want to get back to my wife and Alpha, if you don't mind…" I shrieked, grabbing the man's arm, not knowing what to do, and to my surprise, he didn't get mad, just stared at me like he didn't understand why I was not letting him go, my eyes filling over with tears, and my baby kicking, he couldn't leave, then he would die!
"Beta Brad, your Alpha has exiled you, leaving you here on my land. As the head of the Golden Moon, I hereby offer a place inside this pack. Should you choose to say yes, I would demand you swear the oath to me, my pack, and my Luna, right now."
Caleb was sounding like he was reading a legal contract with Beta Brad's face and smile falling for every second, like he thought my mate was joking at first, and then looking lost before getting angry, gently taking back his arm from my grip, just wanting to sooth his pain, but I couldn't, he wasn't mine, wasn't one of my children, but he could be, if he let Caleb help him!
"Alright, I don't know what kind of game you are playing, but I am not going to stay here, my mate is out there and…" His eyes got fierce, like he had made a choice, sprinting towards the door, shoving it open, with me staring at Caleb moving, why was he stopping him?? Alpha Victor was going to kill him if he reached Melody!
"Because it's too late, Luna, the blood moon was already packing up at the end of our talk, and Victor was pleased I made a distraction big enough to make it possible for me to leave without people raising too many questions.
"What?" I looked back, hurt at him, so everything he said about me, about us, the baby, it was just a… distraction?" My heart was breaking, and I wanted to start crying again, so only the betas of the golden moon were surrounding us, since the blood moon had left!
"Mila, everything I said inside that room was the truth, and I'm sorry you don't believe me when I said that I love you more than anything." Caleb had gotten closer, kneeling down before me, taking my hands, and making me look up, my eyes filled with tears, wanting to believe him. Still, it just felt too made up now when it was all of a big scheme, him being so sweet and caring about me, and now it was all ruined!
"Nothing is ruined. I could say the same speech to every Alpha coming inside these walls. I can't control Victor, okay, Mila, that is the truth. He is a powerful wolf, I know, since I have been competing with him since we were pups. You think his father was better than Terrance?" I gulped down my tears, knowing he was telling me the truth, wasn't he? I could feel the same as him: Alpha Victor wasn't a wolf who would cuddle his mate in front of the entire court, defend her, and show no mercy to the man married to his mate.
"Please, Cay, don't let your friend kill him…" I was pleading with him. I know that my mate, of all people, could convince anyone; he was a powerhouse, and he was kind and caring, even if he didn't show it to the pack.
"What do you mean, not showing the pack, baby? I just told everyone I love you. Didn't you see the Delta females about to pass out from swooning…" I smiled carefully, hearing him try to be funny, and gave him a big smile back, yes. I guess so, not that it mattered; he was mine.
"And the Beta… yeah, he isn't going anywhere… since the blood moon is already halfway back to their lands…" I nodded and, getting up with his help, wanted to join him with this man; he couldn't be older than us, come to think of it, and yet his life had been destroyed by someone else's wishes.
"Beta Brad." Caleb had walked out of the corridor, finding the surfer guy just standing there, his arms loosely crossed and looking down the courtyard, his face upset and still, he wasn't breaking stuff, didn't scream, didn't look like he was going to s*******r this pack for stopping him from leaving.
"She's gone, isn't she?" I whimpered, seeing Caleb make a nod back, with him just making a strange smile back, like he wasn't that surprised, or maybe they didn't have this great marriage like people around them had made up.
"Yes, and you have two choices: rogue or join my pack." Beta Brad turned against us, with me staring at him with all my might, wanting him not to leave. He seemed like a good one, someone who didn't punch first and ask questions later. We needed that more than ever!
"Wow, Alpha, you really are as straightforward as they told me." Beta Brad made another smile, with Caleb not caring what people called him, not like I would, blowing up at the dinner party for being called a Delta.
"Yes, I am. Now, I am sorry about this, Beta, but I have a pregnant mate, and it's getting late. Choose." Caleb made a nod to have some of his men come closer, ready to take him outside this pack if he didn't accept our offer.
"Sorry? I just got separated from my wife and…the worst part is I'm not even that sad..." My eyes perked up, like my wolf was really interested now. Why wouldn't he be sad? Didn't he love his wife? Or was it something else? "You saw your mate, didn't you?" I said breathlessly, remembering my first sight of Caleb. The confusion and guilt were hard for anyone to understand, even yourself.
"Yeah, I mean, yes, she just passed, so I didn't really get a good look, but yes. I think so…" I got up, almost cheering, with Caleb being happy I was, he still wanted to know if his offer would be accepted or not, Beta Brad found his mate or not.
"Oh, Cay, please, please send word for her, she has to know as well, and Delta Vivian…" I was getting so excited, wanting to fix this, maybe this awful story didn't need such an unhappy ending!
"Already did…" I swooned, hearing my mate answer me back, having his arm around me, with me staring at him like he was the best man in the world, the absolute best Alpha and mate I could have.
“Oh… her name is Katlynn…” I said hushed, with the Betas showing in the confused, scared, sweet-looking girl. She was one of the newest members of our pack, our Betas picking her up along with her pack, being on drift since a bigger Alpha had claimed their land, and they couldn't fight back. "Katelynn…" Brad whispered, meeting her eyes. She lost her shyness as I grinned. Caleb watched as they connected quickly—even faster than us. I giggled, amazed by how fast it happened.
"Yes, they don't have any complications like us…. It's just two wolves finding one another. She is going to have a mark as soon as he swears that loyalty to me…" I knew Caleb had gotten that girl here on purpose. Now, Beta Brad couldn't leave his mate, and we had gotten another Beta to the golden moon.
I watched Beta Brad swear his allegiance to my mate before giving me a grin and drying my eyes over how happy I was, his new mate blushing and then taking off into the night, guided by an older Delta, already on their way to get to their new courters, where they would stay, making me snicker, well it did look like the goddess had blessed us, again.
"Come on now, I'm tired, and I want to spend the rest of the night holding my mate and baby…" Caleb was kissing me, making me smile more, starting to walk towards our bedroom, the silent betas following us, the sounds of Deltas whispering being on evening shift before going to bed, everything was just as it was supposed to be.
