During a zombie clearance mission, I, Evelyn Thorne, was infected with the Necrovirus while protecting my team. My boyfriend, Austin Vance, the team leader, used avoiding suspicion as an excuse and gave the only Antivirox Injection to a teammate who had snuck out and gotten infected.

His eyes were red as he promised me, "Evelyn, trust me. Within the three-day incubation period, I will definitely get you an antidote."

I endured the burning pain inside my body and nodded.

The next day, he actually brought back a dose of Antivirox. But just as the injection was about to enter my bloodstream, Heather Brooks, a female team member who had never left the base before, suddenly frowned.

"Austin, my head hurts... I'm so scared I might be infected."

Under everyone's watchful eyes, Austin did not hesitate for even a second and gave her the antidote.

"If anything happens to Heather as a team member, it would mean I'm not doing my job as captain. Evelyn, you're the deputy leader, and you're also my girlfriend. I have to avoid any suspicion."

"If anything happens to Heather as a team member, it would mean I'm not doing my job as captain. Evelyn, you're the deputy leader, and you're also my girlfriend. We can't let others feel that it's unfair." I looked at the flash of smugness in Heather's eyes and at Austin's unquestioning expression, and I almost laughed from anger. Unfair? So I should just wait for death? When Austin handed the injection to Heather, he didn't even look at me. "Heather, take the antidote first," he said, his tone as casual as if he were handing over a bottle of water. Heather took the injection, a flicker of uncontrollable triumph in her eyes. Austin then handed me a small bottle of murky transparent liquid. Avoiding my gaze, he said, "Suppressen fluid. It can keep you stable a little longer." That cheap suppressor was completely useless for someone at my stage of infection. My voice remained calm. "You know this does nothing for me." Austin's eyes flickered as he frowned. "Evelyn, don't get emotional. Heather is physically weak. If she really is infected..." I choked down the bitterness welling up in my heart and let out a cold laugh and cut him off. "She hasn't been on a single mission since joining the team, and she doesn't even have any wounds. How would she be infected?" Austin raised his voice. "That's just on the surface! The Necrovirus has a three-day incubation period—you know that! As the captain, I have to be responsible for every team member! You're my girlfriend, and also the deputy captain. If I give the medicine to you and not her, what will the others think of me? How am I supposed to lead this team? I have to be fair!" Again with that excuse. The gray-white veins on my right arm were slowly creeping toward my shoulder, and the burning sensation under my skin grew worse with every passing moment. I looked at him, holding back my tears, and took a deep breath. "So my life is less important than your reputation? So you're just using Suppressen on me to brush me off?" Austin's expression changed slightly. "Why are you talking like this? I promised you I'd go to Sector West Research Laboratories tomorrow and bring back the antidote! Trust me one more time, okay?" Before the apocalypse, at the military academy, Austin and I were the best team. He commanded, I led the charge; he planned strategies, I executed the details. Everyone said we were a perfect match. On graduation day, he told me on the training field, "Evelyn, from now on, you can trust me completely." After the apocalypse began, I helped him build the survivor team and willingly became his deputy. I gave him all the credit and took all the risks myself. Three years later, the team had grown from seven people to over forty, and he had become the respected Captain Vance. And what did I get now? One excuse after another. One postponed promise after another. If I hadn't lost my ability after infection and become easy prey for the zombies outside, I would never have relied on him to find the antidote. I felt exhausted. "This isn't the first time you've promised me." He grabbed my hand, his gaze sincere. "This time I mean it! Just like before, when you trusted me with your back during missions. Evelyn, trust me one last time." I looked at the hand that had once held mine through gunfire and flames, and heard myself say, "Alright. One last time." Austin let out a relieved breath. "Go back and rest first. I'll arrange tomorrow's personnel and route. Everything will be fine tomorrow." I turned and left without looking back. The moment I stepped out, I heard Heather's lowered voice. "Austin... she was so scary just now. Could she already be..." Austin's voice soothed her. "Don't be afraid. She's still fine for now." Back in the isolation room, I leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor. The burning sensation in my right arm was growing stronger. This was the second day since I was infected with the Necrovirus. According to the normal progression, I should already be showing early signs of muscle rigidity and sensory decline. But I wasn't. Apart from the heat and occasional stabbing pain, my consciousness remained unusually clear. Strangely, I could feel something inside my body beginning to awaken. Distant ruins echoed with zombie howls, rising and falling in waves. This was not the sound of a small horde. Without my ability reinforcing the perimeter defenses, the camp would not hold for long. I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms. Tomorrow was the third day. 'Austin, this is your last chance.'
