Chapter 17
Sarah sat down in the car and was trying hard not to panic. She was almost blown into pieces by an RPG, just minutes into landing into this territory. Viewing how the attack happens, it was quite planned; it was as if they were waiting for their arrival and it didn't look like it was a terrorist attack but more like an attempted assassination, but why? Only Amir had the answer and she had a feeling he won't tell her. As she sat there thinking, she didn't see the driver observing her from the rearview mirror.
She had a scarf on her hair that Amir had insisted she wore before leaving the airplane. The scarf added to her beauty and the driver was in awe of such beauty. He knew he shouldn't stare at a woman; his religion forbids it and it was considered an insult but the beauty in the car couldn't be ignored. She was so lost in her thought that he decided to talk. His English was not perfect but he prayed that she will understand.
"You don't have to worry Ma'am, Mr. Saab will be fine, as he is used to those situations"
Surprise by the voice, Sarah look up to find the driver staring at her who upon seen her, quickly averted his eyes. "He is used to those kinds of situations?"
"Yes Ma'am"
It is a war country; thought she and he did say he had a small army at his disposal. If she adds it up all, there's a big possibility that he may have a military background. She'll have to observe him before concluding. Amir remains a mystery.
"How long have been working for Mr. Saab?" asked Sarah to the driver
"Almost five years now Ma'am"
"Five years, that's a long time, I suppose you've seen a lot of those situations"
"Far worse Ma'am"
Now that sounded intriguing "Call me Sarah and what is your name?"
"Is that your maiden name?"
"Yes, it is"
"Then I cannot call you so, you are lady Ma'am. In our country and tradition, a man cannot freely call a woman by her maiden name"
"Then how should you call me?"
"Sorry to ask Ma'am but are you married?"
"No, I am not"
"Then I shall call you Ms. Sarah"
"Sound good to me, how about you what is your name?"
"My name is Abduh"
"Nice to meet you Abduh"
A little bit of quietness reign in the car as many questions started popping in Sarah's head.
"How long more do you think we will have to wait for Abduh?"
"I cannot say Ms. Sarah; it will depend on how long it will take the team to dismantle the attackers"
"Since you look relax; I suppose that where we are currently located, we are out of imminent danger even though it is dark outside"
"No Ms. Sarah, here danger is everywhere, but since it is night time, everyone is asleep"
Sarah was not convinced since they were almost blown to shred a couple of minutes ago.
"So Abduh, tell me a little bit about yourself?"
"Myself?"
"Yes, do you have a family?"
"Not yet Miss. Sarah, I am hoping that I will meet her very soon, maybe I should go to America and then I could find a beautiful girl like you"
Laughing at his comments Sarah responded "a lot of girls are beautiful but would you like what you will see"
Not knowing where the sudden boldness came from Abduh answered "maybe I already see what I like" his eyes were on the rearview mirror as he says so, but Sarah hadn't time to see him for a movement at the corner of the street caught her attention.
"Abduh"
"Yes, Miss."
"I think there's someone at the corner of the street a little bit ahead of us"
The lights of the vehicle were turned off, there was minimum light in the street, Abduh was about to tell her it was her imagination until he saw for himself the movement. Quickly pressing his earpiece, he contacted the two other drivers. It was only the four of them; Abduh prayed that it was not a militant. With his gun on his thighs, he waited for any more movement as he surveys the area.
It was hard for Sarah to understand what Abduh was saying for he was speaking in his mother tongue. She kept her eyes fixed on the street as her heartbeat elevated. She wished she at least knew how to use a gun. Her knowledge in that area was three over ten.
After more than twenty minutes, Abduh relaxed a bit. It was a false alarm; he looked to the back of the car to see that Sarah had laid her head on the head of the chair and seem to be asleep.
Now it was his turn to be shocked, in her hands, there was some sort of book that was left open on her laps. He wondered what book was that. Just as he was about to reach for it, a soft knocked sounded on the side door, prompting Sarah to immediately open her eyes and becoming alert. Abduh let go of the breath he was holding when he realized that it was Amir who was standing at the passengers' door.
"Then how should you call me?"
