Chapter 16
Five hours later, through the intercom, the pilot announced that they were landing. After having watched the new Kong movie, Sarah had laid her head on Amir's shoulder and fallen asleep. At the announcement of their landing, Amir who had been admiring her came out of his trance. Taking a deep breath, he raised his hands to remove a piece of her hair from her face, but stop short and instead slowly nudge her.
He watched as she wakes and yawns without realizing that she had been resting on his shoulder "Have we arrived?" asked Sarah
"We're about to land," he says as he proceeds to tie her seat belt. She turned her sleepy head toward him and gave him a small smile. A smile that went straight to his heart and made him hopeful of things he dares not mention.
After putting on his seat belt, he laid his head on the chair, closed his eyes and started thinking about the day ahead. They were going to land in a war zone. From the latest news, he had received the war had spread to Aleppo. He would have to assess the situation and probably come up with new strategies.
Twenty minutes later, the plane landed and out of her window, Sarah could see what looks like flames rising from the city. Not letting panic set in, Sarah tells herself that after GOD, Amir will certainly keep her safe. As she walks on toward the main entrance door, gunshots were suddenly heard out of nowhere, altering her footsteps. With a little nudge from Amir whose hands were on her back, she continued to walk. They were followed by Blake and Ben, who had their glasses on, a suit covering what she thought was the host uniform. As the breeze of the wind passed by, the suit of Blake opened up a bit to reveal an interesting object, which only confirms that she had been right about her earlier assumption.
The airport was buzzing with life, people were everywhere. The cries of children could be heard, the sadness upon the women's eyes was livid while the worry feelings meaning from the men could be felt.
"What's going on" whispered she to Amir
"They are trying to leave but with the lack of airplane they are stuck in the airport"
"I am guessing that they sleep here as well"
"Yes, come on let's hurry. Best we are out of the main city, the safer we will be"
"Can I just take a picture if you don't mind?"
"You have one minute"
Sarah didn't have to be told twice, quickly recuperating her camera. She thanks GOD that she had listened to her instinct by not disabling the camera. In less than five seconds she started clicking away, taking snap chat after snap chat.
"Come on Sarah, let's go," say, Amir
She looked to Amir and saw that he had taken her backpack on his shoulder. With Amir leading the way, they were out of the airport and unto an almost deserted street. Sarah had a little eerie feeling; something didn't feel right.
The moment Amir walked out of the airport; he knew something was not right. Three of their vehicles were already at the meeting point. He and Sarah went into the BMW vehicle that was located in the middle, while Ben went into the first vehicles and Blake into the third.
Amir didn't have to give orders to each of his men for those in his service, knew their duties. He turned to look at Sarah thinking that he would have to comfort her in case she panics. Instead, he saw her looking out the windows with an awe expression. The windows of the vehicles reflected her image, thus why he could see her face expression. 'Well here goes his anxiousness for her' he thought. 'She has not experienced anything yet. Patience Amir, the time will come where she will willingly come into your arms to hide from the atrocities of this world'. As for now, he could only dream so.
Just as he was about to turn his head away, Sarah gasps and quick movement made him look at the window and he sees the RPG heading at their location. Holding tightly to Sarah, Amir shouted to his driver who with quick maneuvered was able to by an inch avoid the RPG missile that ended up hitting a wall. The impact sent debris everywhere and almost caused the car to overturn.
Before they could even draw their breath, Gunshot started fallen upon them like the rain. It was quite clear that they had just fallen into a trap. With the vehicle been bulletproof, Amir didn't have to worry about them piercing through.
"Sarah, don't you dare leave the car" and turning toward the driver "Keep driving, I will meet up with you 10 blocks from here"
"Amir, where are you going?"
Instead of answering her, Amir simply touched her cheeks. He was still amazed at how strong she was keeping herself; however, he had no time to linger on that. He opened the door and step out. Using the side vehicle as a cover, he looked to the other vehicles to see the guys had also stepped out with their guns in hands. He took the weapon from under his suit; and softly knocked on the side of the vehicle, indicating to the driver to move slowly. The vehicle moved as they moved and from his standpoint, he could tell that their attackers were located on the two buildings ahead of them. By the number of gunshots, they were receiving; it was quite easy to guess that they were at least four in each building. Once they rounded up the first corner, the vehicles left at a fast speed while he and his men used the wall as a shield.
They moved like Chameleon, pinpointing their target and heading to their location. In one building located on the right side of the road, Amir and two of his men entered. Using the stairs as quietly as possible, he proceeded to the fifth floor. His men were ordered to at least leave one or two alive. Upon reaching the targeted floor, they position themselves behind the door. He could hear them shooting in his mother tongue language
'We missed; the boss will not be happy.'
"Whether boss will be happy or not, is not my business, we better get out of here, before we too get cornered"
Just as they opened the door, they found themselves face with three menacing-looking men and weapons pointed toward them. The two guys found themselves swallowing their saliva, they had only one option, blow themselves up hoping to take Amir with them, but before they could even act upon it, two rounds of gunshots were heard as both men fell on the floor and blood dripping out of their legs. Without wasting time, Amir's men were already on the two assailants as they remove all of their pieces of equipment. Now they had to take off the other two within the building.
"Boss," says one of Amir man
"Make sure to bring them to the secret location, I want to find out who is this boss of theirs that wants to see six feet under? Do what you need to do to have them talk"
"Understood boss"
Putting his weapon back into place, from the earphone placed in his hear he could hear Blake saying that they too had neutralized the other two. Just a couple of minutes into his homeland and already an assassination attempt. One thing he didn't tell Sarah was that as an ex-colonel of the Syrian army he had quite a few enemies that would wish to see him buried six feet under.
