Chapter 1 - Oh Oh
“A pinch of salt, dash of turmeric and-”
“-a pile of s**t Aman!” Ah, the perfect ingredient of spice in Khushi Sen Roy’s life! She smiled, barely surprised at the way her husband’s yells made their way to her kitchen. But of course, one was rarely the CEO of a multi million dollar media company without being an arrogant, stoic, ruthless and devastatingly handsome.
Poor Aman though, that man could be classified as the world’s second humanoid. The first being her husband, for he was the only person who could find faults in his chief legal advisor’s work. A shudder went up her spine, recalling her days of being his assistant's assistant.
But to Khushi, her husband was her prince charming, which, by the way, was highly contested by every other human than her. If you’d ask Aman, the chief legal advisor and Mr. Ruthless’s unfortunate best friend of fifteen years, he was still lost at how in the world did the bubbly, traditional and shy Khushi agree to marry the megalomaniac Arnav Sen Roy.
That was a story for another day. Today, much to the butlers surprise - conveniently named Om, Jai and Jagdish - Khushi relaxed at the sight of her angry husband and almost hummed in sync with his rant. Her sweet musings came to an end with the foul smell of stale cilantro teasing her nostrils.
"Om!" Her faithful and favourite butler ran in, a fresh packet of cilantro in his hands. Just in time! Spreading the herb over the pilaf, she tasted a morsel herself to make sure that it's not too spicy for her husband's delicate stomach.
"It's perfect ma'am." 4 feet 10 inches tall Om beamed, knowing that nothing pleased Mrs. Roy than a food well cooked meal, even if she was personally terrible at it.
"How many times should I ask you to just call me Khushi?" Khushi admonished, applying a layer of flat dough over the clay pot. Without her further instruction Om smiled benignly at Khushi and placed the pot in the oven.
Wiping her hands on a spare towel, Khushi chuckled at Jagdish - the cook and Om’s brother, who sulked in a corner.
"What's the matter Jagdish?"
"Ma'am..."
"Khushi!"
"Khushi ma'am..."
"Just Khushi!"
"Khushi didi... ... ..."
"Why did you stop speaking?"
"Oh I thought you'll stop me from saying didi!"
Khushi laughed and shook her head. "You called me as your elder sister, what's wrong with that?" Jagdish swelled in pride, momentarily forgetting his complaint over the food. Getting a thump on his back from his brother, Jagdish recalled his complain.
"Didi, we still have not managed to get an investor for your food company. I mean you did forbid Arnav sahib from investing and the others showed interest only because of the Roy tag but now…” Khushi frowned, she had predicted this problem. Once the investors got to know that Khushi Sen Roy was actually an ordinary tailor’s daughter with a degree in business from a government college, they took ten steps back.
So what if she didn’t speak English as fluently as her husband. So what if the press wrote articles on how she ‘snagged’ her husband. So what if social media constantly trolled that she was not ‘good enough’ for ASR, and someone like Miss Universe Shanaya Oberoi suited him better?
"Didi, don’t worry, we’ll-” A bell interrupted Jai, the third butler.
Khushi regretted pausing Jai Prakash because she needed those words of comfort, however Arnav had informed her that an important client was coming home. Slipping back her diamond encrusted bangles and unclipping her hair, she checked her saree once again before hurrying to the door.
"You look wonderful Khushi ma’am!" She heard Om from an earshot and grinned. Those butlers had to be her brothers from her past life!
"Not ma'am Om Prakash!" Khushi jokingly scowled back, smiling as her husband ran down the stairs. Even though a solid year had passed after their wedding, Khushi couldn't suppress the butterflies in her stomach when Arnav walked by her. Though her smile faded the minute a tall, long-legged woman burst in and took him in an familiar hug.
"Arnav!"
"Shanaya!"
What in fu--God’s name!
