Ex-Boyfriend

1350 Words
He was perfect. Every line, every gesture, every choice felt like Hiro. Even the original dialogue he improvised sounded like it came straight from the manga. The dude was Hiro Kisaki. No one could play him better. She would know; she was Hiro Kisaki's biggest fan. She’d been obsessed with Hiro Kisaki since college. Shazarah introduced her to the manga, and Mia fell hard. She joined the fan club, the RPG circle, ran websites, and even wrote fan fiction. In the online, chat-based RPG, Mia, of course, played Kiku Yun—Hiro’s sassy best friend and eventual love interest. She thought she had done a pretty good job, considering she was a Black girl from Brooklyn pretending to be a Japanese girl who fell through a portal into ancient China. She never met Hiro’s player in real life, though he’d wanted to. He’d asked her out. Wanted to meet offline. But Mia declined. She didn’t want a real relationship. She liked the fantasy. Real relationships? Please. Look what they’d gotten her. Joseph. A podcast war with men who laughed in her face when she tried to explain betrayal was wrong. No thanks. The online romance with “Hiro” was the best relationship she’d ever had. They went on adventures. Made each other laugh. Talked in and out of character for hours. Built worlds. Wrote stories. It was sweet. It was safe. Or so she thought. In the end, she found the same disappointment in "Hiro" that she found in Dinero, Luchini, and Patrick Scar Which was ironic because FFLS was the anime that taught her the potential and power of love. Two people who truly love, understand, and respect each other protect each other from all the dangers of a harsh world that misunderstands them. It was the kind of love Mia always wanted. When Joseph and Jackson left, she began thinking about Hiro again and decided to conduct a search on him to see if she could gather more clues about this character. And also, clues into why real men like Joseph weren't like Hiro. Haha. She thought. She could almost hear the rage. The voices of men who tell "wife bad" jokes all the time, but couldn't tolerate it when the joke was on them. Speaking of rage, she couldn't help but think of the human being who played Hiro in their RPG. What would have happened if I'd actually met the real Hiro from the game? She might never know. After 4 years of them hanging out and playing the RPG together, he went Incel-Red Pill on her and became really abusive even during the game. Eventually, she got sick of the BS and ditched him. It's sad she had to do it. They were like best friends in-game until he started listening to these podcast bros like "The Disaster Avoidance Team." Before his change, though, he had been an odd guy who didn't say much about himself or his real life, but she remembers him asking a lot of questions. Not just about her, but strange questions about life and people in general. Mia remembers he told her he was from a different country, even though when they spoke on the phone, he sounded perfectly American to her. The awesome thing about him, though, was that he created great storylines for them to play out. He was also a fantastic Roleplayer who seemed to really live through his characters. He played Hiro Kisaki so well...he WAS Hiro Kisaki. Anyway, she finds a Hiro Kisaki fan site and starts reading. The character stats were just as she remembered: Hiro Kisaki — Character Profile Name: Hiro Kisaki Anime: Flowers Fall Like Stars Genre: Fantasy · Romance · Comedy Occupation: Martial arts master with dreams of becoming a palace chef Backstory: Hiro’s life changes when Kiku Yun—a bratty pop star from our world—is sucked into his dimension after reading a mysterious Shinto scroll hidden in her purse. She lands in a poverty-stricken village resembling ancient China and is immediately targeted by traffickers. Hiro, en route to the Emperor’s Palace, hears her screams and intervenes. He defeats the thugs effortlessly. Grateful, Kiku thanks him—but Hiro wants more than words. He asks her to pretend to be his wife to help him gain favor with the Emperor and land the chef job. Kiku agrees, needing Hiro’s protection and a way home. But when they arrive at the palace, one of her attackers turns out to be the Emperor’s younger brother. He accuses them of espionage, forcing Hiro and Kiku to flee, hide, and survive as fugitives. This summary was followed by several short summaries of some of Hiro's more notable actions in the series. Like the many times he risked his life for Kiku's safety. It discussed how the character "Hiro" was portrayed as a kind-hearted but imperfect man, prone to fits of jealousy. It touched on how he was often at odds with any man or woman he felt got too friendly with Kiku. Much of the comedy in the series was driven by Hiro and Kiku's quirky relationship. They seem more like bickering siblings at first, but their relationship slowly strengthens into a passionate romance as the story progresses. Mia smirked when reading that part. Yeah, it had been fun. She played Kiku Yun in the RPG, and yes, she and Hiro from the game had gotten along just like the characters in the real anime. They started by bickering and teasing each other, which eventually led to a deep love story. It was beautiful! She thought of her relationship with Joseph, how it had lacked romance, and the close friendship bond that she had with "Hiro". She knew it probably wasn't a good idea to compare her real relationship with an RPG one, but she couldn't help it. The RPG one had been way more amazing! She felt blessed to even be part of such a romance, even if it all was just a fantasy. But it still ended. In fact, it ended in fireworks. It ended in explosives. Nah, baby. That was a NUKE BOMB! Never mind that. Mia thought as she pushed the traumatic thoughts away. She scrolled down. Idly she started reading some of the comments, and her heart froze: Comments Section: Alcopolco6769 Hiro's so romantic! He wants to protect Kiku and be with her for the rest of his life!
