5Sinking SandI storm back through the maze of corridors, my mind spinning, my blood racing. Each breath comes faster than the last. What was the point of this? I know why I came here—for Lucas. But what was Vanessa’s goal? She’s more careful than this, more exact. Leaving her sister alone in her house had to mean more than just a weak opportunity to lose my self-control. And why would she put her own sister up as the bait? Only when I pass under the curved, jade staircase leading to the second floor do I feel the need to slow down and take stock of my surroundings. Vanessa has proven catlike in her every move, her every thought. Glowering silently from on high probably comes quite naturally for her. I press against the far wall and track the stairs with my eyes, and then scan the catwalk
