Season 1 Episode 1 – THE HOUSE WITHOUT A MOTHER
INT. SMALL, DIM HOUSE – NIGHT
Rain outside.
A leaking roof.
A ceiling fan that squeaks like it’s tired of living.
Jason (20) sits on the floor, back against the wall, doing nothing.
Aanya (24) stands near the kitchen, counting coins.
The FATHER stumbles in, drunk. Bottle in hand.
FATHER
(angry, slurred)
What is this food?
You call this food?
Aanya doesn’t answer immediately.
AANYA
Eat it. Or don’t.
There’s nothing else.
The father slams the bottle on the table.
FATHER
You think you’re talking to your friends?
I’m your father.
Jason looks up. His jaw tightens.
JASON
(softly)
Just eat, please.
The father laughs—ugly, loud.
FATHER
Oh look.
The boy speaks.
He walks toward Jason.
FATHER (CONT’D)
What will you do, huh?
You’ll cry?
Like your mother?
The word mother hangs in the air.
Aanya steps between them immediately.
AANYA
Enough.
The father shoves her aside.
Jason jumps up instinctively.
JASON
Don’t touch her!
SLAP.
Jason hits the floor.
Silence.
Aanya drops to her knees beside Jason, shielding him with her body.
AANYA
(hushed, furious)
Hit me if you want.
He didn’t do anything.
The father breathes heavily, staring at them.
FATHER
I feed you.
I keep this house alive.
Aanya looks up at him, eyes burning.
AANYA
No.
I do.
The father freezes.
For a moment, Jason thinks she’ll be hit again.
Instead, the father scoffs and walks away, grabbing the bottle.
A door slams.
Silence again.
Only rain.
Aanya checks Jason’s face.
AANYA
Does it hurt?
Jason nods. Then shakes his head.
JASON
I’m fine.
She presses a cloth to his cheek.
AANYA
You always say that.
Jason avoids her eyes.
JASON
You shouldn’t have stepped in.
He would’ve stopped.
Aanya laughs bitterly.
AANYA
He never stops, Jason.
He just gets tired.
She sits beside him on the floor.
JASON
Why do you do this?
AANYA
Do what?
JASON
Protect me.
Run the house.
Act like… like—
He can’t say the word.
Aanya says it for him.
AANYA
Like Amma?
Jason swallows.
JASON
You didn’t have to become her.
Aanya smiles sadly.
AANYA
Someone had to.
Jason’s voice breaks—not loud, just honest.
JASON
I hate that I need you.
Aanya looks at him, surprised.
AANYA
Why?
JASON
Because men aren’t supposed to hide behind their sisters.
She cups his face gently.
AANYA
You’re not hiding.
You’re surviving.
Jason pulls away.
JASON
I don’t want to survive.
I want to matter.
Aanya’s eyes soften—and worry creeps in.
AANYA
You already matter to me.
Jason laughs, hollow.
JASON
That’s the problem.
Silence.
Rain continues.
Aanya stands up.
AANYA
Come.
Sleep.
Jason doesn’t move.
JASON
Aanya…
What if I become someone you don’t recognize?
She turns back.
AANYA
Then I’ll remind you who you were.
Jason looks at her—really looks.
JASON
And if that’s not enough?
Aanya pauses. Her voice cracks—but she doesn’t let him see it.
AANYA
Then I’ll love you anyway.
Jason looks down.
JASON
I don’t want your life.
AANYA
(smiling through pain)
Then make sure mine wasn’t wasted.
She switches off the light.
Darkness.
Jason sits alone, staring at nothing.
A thought settles in him for the first time:
Love is not power.
And power is the only thing that scares monsters.
