Wrong Place, Wrong Time
The first time I met Ethan Blackwood, he was deciding whether to ruin someone's life. I just happened to be standing in the wrong place when he did it. Rain hammered against the glass walls of Blackwood Tower as I stood frozen outside a half-open office door, my heart beating so hard it hurt. Inside, three men sat around a conference table worth more than everything I owned. And at the head of it sat Ethan Blackwood. Twenty-four. Billionaire. Heir. The man every business magazine called a genius. The man everyone else called dangerous. I should have walked away. Instead, I listened. "Sign it," one of the men said. The document slid across the table. No one spoke. No one moved. Then Ethan picked up a pen. A simple movement. Yet somehow every person in the room seemed nervous. Including the men old enough to be his father. "If I sign this," Ethan said quietly, "you're asking me to trust you." The older man's smile faltered. "And if I don't?" Ethan looked up. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. "Then by tomorrow morning," he said, "you won't have a company left to run." Silence. Complete silence. I should have left right then. Instead, I stared. And that was my mistake. Because at that exact moment, my phone slipped from my hand. CLACK. The sound echoed through the hallway. Three heads turned. Then Ethan Blackwood's eyes met mine. And in that instant, I knew one thing. I had just witnessed something I was never supposed to see. The older men looked annoyed. Ethan looked curious. That terrified me more. He rose from his chair. Slowly. Calmly. Like a king leaving his throne. Every step echoed against the marble floor as he approached the door. My instincts screamed at me to run. I didn't. I couldn't. By the time he reached me, my feet felt rooted to the ground. His dark eyes swept over me. Rain-soaked uniform. Cheap backpack. Cracked phone on the floor. A complete stranger. "You saw everything." It wasn't a question. My throat tightened. "I—I didn't mean to. I was just looking for a restroom." One of the men behind him laughed. Ethan didn't. He kept staring. As if he were trying to figure out whether I was a threat. Or something else entirely. "What is your name?" he asked. "Lia." For some reason, saying it felt dangerous. "Lia," he repeated. The way he said it made my name sound unfamiliar. Then he glanced at the men behind him. A silent message passed between them. Something I didn't understand. Something that made my stomach twist. When he looked back at me, his expression was unreadable. "You have two choices." My heart dropped. "W-What?" "You can walk away." Relief flooded through me. Then he continued. "Or you can come inside and hear the offer I'm about to make." The relief vanished instantly. Because something told me that if I stepped into that office... My life would never be the same again.
