THE BILLIONAIRE’S CONTRACT WIFE
Episode 1
Chapter 1: The Deal
The rain was hitting the glass walls of Sterling Tower like bullets.
Cold. Relentless. Just like the city.
Ava Carter stood in the lobby with wet shoes, shaking hands, and a folder clutched to her chest. Inside that folder were hospital bills, test results, and a doctor’s note with red ink stamped across it:
Her mom had 48 hours left before the hospital cut off her cancer treatment.
48 hours. $200,000.
And Ava had $47.32 in her account.
She’d sold everything. Her car. Her laptop. Her grandmother’s necklace.
Nothing was enough.
The receptionist barely looked up. “Sterling Corp doesn’t do charity.”
“I’m not here for charity,” Ava said, voice cracking. “I’m here to see Mr. Sterling.”
She’d been waiting 6 hours. Security had told her to leave 3 times.
That’s when the doors opened and he walked in.
Damien Sterling.
Even the air felt different when he entered.
CEO of Sterling Corp. Billionaire. 31. Ruthless. The man who bought and sold companies before breakfast and ruined people before lunch.
Black Tom Ford suit. Black umbrella. Black eyes that looked straight through you.
He was walking past with two lawyers and a phone to his ear when he stopped.
Looked at her.
Not at her face. At the folder in her hands. At the hospital logo.
“You look desperate,” he said. His voice was low. Like gravel and whiskey.
Ava lifted her chin. Her mom taught her that. Never beg on your knees.
“I’m not here to beg.”
“Good. Begging is boring.” He ended his call and pulled out a matte black card. No name. Just a number.
“My office. 30 minutes. Come alone. Floor 60.”
Then he walked away. The lawyers followed like shadows.
---
30 minutes later, Ava’s heart was hammering as the elevator rose.
Floor 60. Sterling’s private office.
The doors opened to glass, marble, and a view of the entire city drowning in rain.
And him. Standing with his back to her, pouring whiskey.
“No coffee,” he said without turning. “I don’t do pleasantries.”
Ava didn’t sit. “Why am I here, Mr. Sterling?”
He turned. Up close he was worse. Taller. Colder. A scar cut through his left eyebrow.
“I need a wife.”
Ava blinked. “Excuse me?”
“The board is threatening to push me out. My grandmother is dying and her last wish is to see me married. And I’m tired of gold diggers at galas.” He walked to his desk and slid a thick document across it.
MARRIAGE CONTRACT
Duration: 1 Year
Payment: $5,000,000 USD
Duties: Public appearances. Dinners. Acting as Mrs. Sterling.
Rules: No love. No intimacy. No questions about my business. Termination clause applies.
Ava stared at the number. Five million.
It would pay off the hospital. Pay off debt. Her mom could get the best doctors in Switzerland.
“I don’t even know you,” she whispered.
“You don’t need to. You need to sign.” Damien picked up a pen and held it out.
“This is business, Ms. Carter. I did my research. Single daughter. Medical debt. No family except a sick mother. You’re perfect. You have nothing to lose.”
The words cut. Because he was right.
She had nothing left except her pride. And pride wouldn’t buy chemo.
“What happens after one year?”
“We divorce. You get the money. I get the board off my back. Clean break.”
Ava laughed, but it sounded broken. “And if I say no?”
“Then your mother’s treatment stops in 48 hours.” He didn’t smile. “I’m not cruel, Ms. Carter. I’m efficient.”
The pen felt heavy in her hand.
Her mom’s face flashed in her head. Pale in the hospital bed. Smiling even through pain.
“Fight, baby girl.”
Ava signed.
Ava Carter.
The moment the ink dried, Damien took the contract and buzzed his assistant.
“Transfer $200,000 to City General Hospital. Account under Margaret Carter. And $5,000,000 to Ms. Carter’s account. Effective immediately.”
Her phone buzzed 2 seconds later.
She almost collapsed.
“Welcome to the family,” Damien said. He didn’t offer his hand.
“One rule, Ava. Don’t fall in love with me. I don’t do love. I don’t do marriage. This is a transaction.”
“I understand,” she said. Her voice was steady now.
“Good.” He walked to the window. “You’ll move into the penthouse tonight. Stylist comes at 8am. First public appearance is the Sterling Gala in 3 days. Don’t embarrass me.”
Ava nodded and turned to leave. Her hand was on the door when he spoke again.
“Oh. And Ava?”
She looked back.
“Read page 17, clause 4b before you sleep.”
She frowned. “What is it?”
Damien finally smiled. But it didn’t reach his eyes.
“A little detail we added. About what happens if one of us breaks the contract.”
The door closed behind her.
In the elevator, shaking, Ava pulled out her copy and flipped to page 17.
Clause 4b:
Her blood went cold.
She’d just sold her life to the devil in a Tom Ford suit.
And the devil had fine print.
