Chapter one
The Gala
"What brings you here?" Glancing across the packed ballroom toward Alexander Kane, I fired back, my heart pounding. I could feel the weight of his stare, and the tension in the air was palpable.
With a grin on his lips, he answered, "Isn't it obvious?" "I'm the lovely gala's host."
" Lovely? More like an exhibition of your conceit,” I shot back, crossing my arms.
His laughter was rich and low. “And you, Mia Sullivan, the fearless reporter, must be. Are you here to reveal my secrets?”
"Cryptos? or simply the reality? I remained resolute in my challenge. "You know you have a reputation."
"Reputation? or perhaps hearsay? His eyes narrowed as he moved in closer. "What have you learned?"
With a firm voice, I said, "Enough to know that you're not the saint everyone pretends you are." "My goal is to discover what you're truly concealing."
"Be cautious, Mia. His tone abruptly turned serious as he cautioned, "Curiosity can be harmful.
"Perilous? or simply annoying for you? Sensing the heat between us, I fired back.
With a little change in expression, he responded, "Touché." "But be aware that going too far can get you into trouble."
"My middle name is trouble," I answered, a tinge of disobedience in my voice.
My closest friend Clara suddenly showed up by my side, her eyes beaming with anticipation. "Mia! You are there! I searched for you.
I said, "Clara, this is Alexander Kane," in an attempt to defuse the awkward moment.
With a wave of her eyes, Clara murmured, "Nice to meet you." "I hope you're not having too much trouble with her."
"Not at all," Alexander answered, grinning once more. "To be honest, I find her really fascinating."
Clara gave me a raised eyebrow. "Interesting? or hazardous?”
He gave me a knowing glance and remarked, "Maybe a bit of both."
"Just watch out, Mia," Clara said quietly. "You shouldn't mess with him."
"I am capable of managing myself," I replied, dismissing her worry. "Clara, I appreciate you reminding me."
I turned to face Alexander again as Clara strayed off to socialize. "So, what is the true narrative of your empire?"
He leant on the railing, his eyes somewhat amused. "You believe you can simply waltz into this place and figure out my secrets?"
"I'm not dancing the waltz. With a burst of resolve, I answered, "I'm digging." "And until I discover the truth, I won't give up."
With a suddenly serious tone, he said, "Then you're in for a wild ride."
"Come on," I said, firmly crossing my arms.
At that moment, the ballroom reverberated with a loud crash and flickering lights. A server misplaced a tray of glasses, causing the area to go quiet. I looked over and saw Alexander's face becoming serious.
"What was that?" With a beating heart, I asked.
"It's just a small setback," he said, surveying the audience. "But this needs to be taken care of."
Hold on! You can't simply abandon me here! I let out a cry, but he was already weaving in and out of the mob.
He called over his shoulder, "Stay close." "I intend to return."
Heart racing, I saw him vanish into the crowd of guests. I had no idea what I was getting into. I saw Clara once again a short while after that. "What happened?" she questioned, her worried eyes wide.
"Alexander had an issue to attend to," I remarked in an attempt to sound informal. "But I'm alright,"
Alright? You and a millionaire recently had a heated exchange!” Clara shouted. "What's your current plan?"
"I must learn more about him," I retorted, my resolve taking over. "This is my opportunity."
"Just be careful," Clara cautioned once more. "This isn't the real him."
I said, "I know what I'm doing," yet uncertainty began to surface. Say Clara was correct. Alexander appeared again abruptly, his countenance solemn. "Mia, we should speak."
"Speak? Or are you simply going to intimidate me once more? With my arms crossed, I fired back.
Not at all. With a hushed voice, he said, "I want to explain." "My story is more complex than you realize."
I pushed back, sensing the tension between us, "Then tell me." "I'm paying attention."
He paused and looked around the space. "Not in this place. Adhere to me.
"Where are we heading?" He didn't respond when I asked.
He led me into a poorly lit hallway through a side door. Behind us, the din of the gala gave way to a spooky quiet.
"What drew you to this place?" With a beating heart, I asked.
"Because I need you to understand," he stated in a grave tone of voice. "My life does not reflect who I am."
I pushed, sensing the weight of his stare. "Then show me." "I'm curious about the reality."
He ran a hand through his hair and inhaled deeply. "I started this empire from nothing. However, it's more than simply business it's survival.
"Living? What are you trying to say? Intrigued, I pressed.
His voice was low as he replied, "There are people who want to take everything from me." I am unable to allow that to occur.
Does that explain your extreme caution? Seeing the frailty underlying his hard façade, I questioned.
He looked into my eyes and said, "Maybe." I can't let anyone in, though. not even you.
"Why not?" I pushed back, getting a kick out of it. "I am not your adversary."
"Are you certain of that?" He flashed back, intense in his eyes. "Remember that you came here to expose me?"
"My goal is to discover the truth," I answered in a firm tone. "And maybe everything will change because of that truth."
Tension was in the air as he moved closer. "You have no idea what you're requesting."
With my heart racing, I begged, "Then help me understand." "Permit me to enter."
A thunderous boom reverberated from the ballroom at that very moment, and the lights flickered once more. I experienced a panic attack.
"What was that?" My voice trembled as I asked.
Alexander commanded me to "stay here," but I wasn't going to let him go by himself.
"Not at all. With unyielding conviction, I maintained, "I'm coming with you."
After he paused, he nodded. Alright. But remain near.
We were walking back towards the ballroom when I sensed the tension between us catching like sparks of electricity. What was going on between us? The scene was disorganized when we got back. Murmuring among the guests, I noticed Alexander's estranged brother Victor Kane skulking at the edge of the group.
Alexander whispered, "Victor," as his face darkened.
"Why is he in this place?" With a shiver running down my spine, I asked.
"As usual, causing trouble," Alexander shot back, his jaw tensing.
"Do we have to confront him?" With a beating heart, I asked.
Not at all. Not yet,” he uttered in a low voice. "We must exercise caution."
"Mindful? He poses a danger. I cried out, my frustration building.
"I am aware," Alexander stated, keeping his eyes on Victor. "But we have to keep him from seeing us perspire."
Victor turned at that moment, a smug smirk lighting across his face as he saw us. "Okay, okay, okay. With a gleam in his eyes, he mocked, "Look who it is."
Alexander gestured for Victor to keep away from them, putting himself in front of me for protection.
Or what? Will you keep her safe? Victor chuckled, the noise resonating around the now-tense chamber. "Brother, it's too late. The game has already started.
"Which game?" I asked, a wave of anxiety rising in me.
"Mia, the truth can be a dangerous thing," Victor remarked, grinning broadly. "And I hope nothing bad happens to you."
Victor, Alexander hissed, his voice low and menacing. "Get away from her," he said.
With a mischievous gleam in his eyes, Victor remarked, "Let's see how this plays out." "It seems like a really interesting show,"
He then turned and vanished into the throng, leaving a thick trail of stillness behind him.
"What was the matter with that?" With my heart racing, I turned to Alexander and asked.
"There's nothing to be concerned about," he said, his face tense.
"I have nothing to be concerned about? I was just threatened by your brother! I cried out, my frustration building.
Alexander claimed, "Victor is just trying to get under my skin," but his jaw was obviously tense.
Beneath your skin? Alexander, he poses a danger! I said, 'I need to know what's going on.
"Mia, trust me. His voice was low as he cautioned, "You don't want to become engaged in this.
It's too late to do that. With resolve coursing through me, I shot back, "I'm already involved." And I'm not going to give up. At that moment, the lights flickered once more, and the room be
came completely dark. Alexander's hand closed around mine. "Remain near," he murmured, his desperation sending shivers down my spine. Something isn't quite right.
