The Moonlight Encounter
For ten long years, silver had been the source of my suffering. Its cruel magic burned through my skin, poisoned my blood, and crushed every trace of power hidden deep within my soul.
I had spent a decade imprisoned in the darkest corner of the Crescent Pack's dungeon, locked inside a cold stone cell where sunlight never reached. The walls were damp, the air was suffocating, and the silence was broken only by the occasional footsteps of guards passing outside.
The chains wrapped around my wrists were no ordinary restraints. Although they appeared old and rusted, they were forged from pure silver and covered in mysterious runes. Whenever I tried to pull against them, the markings glowed blue, sending waves of agonizing pain through my body.
The guards had given me a cruel nickname: the mute servant girl.
They treated me as though I were nothing more than an unwanted animal. My meals consisted of stale bread and whatever scraps they felt like throwing into my cell. Whenever I looked up at them, they laughed and reminded me that I was an orphan with no family, no name worth remembering, and no one who would ever come looking for me.
But I had never believed their words completely.
Something about my imprisonment made no sense. Ordinary servants were not locked away in underground cells. They were not restrained with enchanted silver or subjected to magic designed to suppress their very existence.
Whatever my past might have been, I knew one thing with certainty: I was not an ordinary girl.
And tonight, everything was about to change.
The entire Crescent Pack was celebrating the return of its Alpha from war. The sounds of music, drunken laughter, and triumphant howls drifted down through the dungeon ceiling. The scent of roasted meat and alcohol filled the air, reminding me that the people living above ground were enjoying their freedom while I remained buried beneath their feet.
Even the guards stationed outside my cell had joined the celebration. Their voices were unsteady, and their conversation was filled with drunken jokes. For once, they were too distracted to pay attention to the prisoner they had spent years controlling.
Then I noticed the moon.
Through a narrow c***k in the ceiling, I could see its enormous red shape hanging in the night sky.
The Blood Moon had risen.
Something inside me stirred.
I looked down at my wrists and noticed that the runes on my silver chains had stopped glowing. Their blue light had vanished completely, leaving the metal cold and lifeless.
For the first time in ten years, the magic holding me captive had weakened.
Perhaps the Blood Moon had awakened something within me. Perhaps my hidden power had finally grown strong enough to challenge the enchantment that had kept me helpless for so long.
Whatever the reason, I knew I could not waste this opportunity.
I reached into a hidden corner of my cell and retrieved a sharp piece of bone I had secretly saved after finding it near a dead rat. My fingers trembled as I worked the crude tool into the lock.
The metal scraped against the mechanism.
My wrists were raw from years of wearing silver, and even the slightest movement caused blood to trickle down my hands. I ignored the pain and continued working until I felt something shift inside the lock.
Then came a quiet click.
The chains slipped from my wrists and crashed onto the stone floor.
For several seconds, I could only stare at them.
I was free.
The realization overwhelmed me, but I knew that hesitation could cost me everything. I pushed myself to my feet and hurried toward the cell door, moving as quietly as possible.
The drunken guards barely noticed me as I passed. Their attention remained fixed on their conversation, and I slipped beyond them before either man could realize what had happened.
I climbed the stone staircase, crossed the kitchen, and escaped through the back entrance of the pack's stronghold.
Cold night air struck my face.
For the first time in a decade, I could breathe without the suffocating smell of damp stone and rust surrounding me.
I ran barefoot into the f*******n forest, my torn dress catching on branches and sharp thorns cutting into my legs. Pain followed every step, but it could not extinguish the happiness rising inside me.
I laughed as I ran.
I had no idea where I was going, and I had no plan for what would happen next. All I knew was that I would rather face the dangers of the forest than return to the darkness of that dungeon.
Eventually, exhaustion forced me to slow down.
Through the trees, I discovered a lake shimmering beneath the red moon.
It was the legendary Moonlight Lake, a place the older prisoners had whispered about during the rare moments when the guards were out of earshot. According to their stories, wolves avoided its waters because ancient spirits supposedly lived beneath the surface.
Yet standing before it, I felt no immediate fear.
The lake was breathtaking. Its still waters reflected the crimson moonlight, creating a silvery glow that seemed almost supernatural.
I dropped to my knees beside the shore and leaned forward to drink.
That was when I saw my reflection.
For ten years, I had lived without a mirror. I had never been able to see my own face properly, and I had almost forgotten what I looked like.
Now, the water revealed a stranger.
A young woman stared back at me, her long, wavy black hair falling all the way to her waist. Her skin was unusually pale, and her lips appeared strikingly red against it.
But it was her eyes that truly frightened me.
They were not brown, as I had always assumed.
They were silver.
Their light shimmered like liquid moonlight, bright enough to make them look unreal. As I moved my hair away from my forehead, I discovered a faint mark hidden beneath it: a small crescent moon.
I raised my trembling fingers and touched the symbol.
It felt warm beneath my skin.
"Who am I?" I whispered.
The question had haunted me for years, but for the first time, I wondered whether the answer was connected to the strange power awakening inside me.
Before I could think further, the wind shifted.
A powerful scent swept through the forest, overwhelming everything around me. It carried the freshness of pine trees after rainfall, the smoky richness of burning wood, the earthy smell of leather, and something far more dangerous.
Alpha power.
My heart began to race. My knees weakened, and the crescent mark on my forehead suddenly burned as though someone had pressed a heated blade against it.
I did not understand why my body was reacting so strongly.
But some instinct buried deep within me recognized the approaching presence before my mind could identify it.
Then I heard a growl.
It was low, deep, and powerful enough to vibrate through the ground beneath my feet.
Slowly, I turned toward the rocky ridge overlooking the lake.
A man stood at its highest point.
At first glance, he appeared human, but there was something terrifyingly animalistic about him. He was enormous, standing well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders and a muscular body marked by numerous scars. His long black hair was tied behind his head, revealing a sharply defined face that was as striking as it was intimidating.
His eyes glowed molten gold.
There was no mistaking what he was.
An Alpha.
Behind him stood an enormous black wolf, its body even more imposing than the man's. The creature's golden eyes matched those of its human counterpart, and its threatening posture suggested that it was ready to attack anything foolish enough to approach.
I recognized the man immediately.
Alpha Kael.
The Beast of the North.
He was the ruler of the Crescent Pack, the same Alpha whose territory contained the dungeon where I had spent ten years of my life. Rumors described him as a merciless warrior who had slaughtered countless rogues with his bare hands.
More importantly, he was the man who had ordered me to remain chained beneath his stronghold.
Fear seized my chest.
Before I could escape, Kael leaped from the rocky ridge. He descended a considerable distance and landed directly in front of me without making a sound.
His speed was unnatural.
I turned to flee, but he caught my arm before I could take more than a single step.
His fingers closed around my wrist. His hand was rough, enormous, and burning hot against my cold skin.
The instant our bodies touched, an extraordinary force surged between us.
A bolt of brilliant blue electricity shot through my arm and spread across my chest. The entire world seemed to explode into light as my silver eyes flashed, illuminating the lake and the surrounding trees.
I gasped in shock.
Kael reacted just as violently.
His golden eyes widened, and his expression transformed from cold authority into stunned disbelief. For a brief moment, something darker appeared to take control of him. His gaze shifted, his breathing deepened, and the enormous black wolf behind him seemed to respond to the same invisible force.
Kael leaned closer, drawing in my scent as though he had discovered something he had been searching for his entire life.
Then he spoke a single word.
"Mate."
The word emerged as a growl, carrying the unmistakable voice of his wolf.
"Mine."
I stared at him, unable to understand what was happening.
"What?" I managed to choke out, struggling against his grip.
His expression became increasingly troubled. He looked at me as though I had shattered every belief he had ever held.
"You are my mate?" he demanded. "You—the servant girl from my dungeon?"
Disbelief and anger mingled in his voice.
"Impossible."
He pulled me closer until his face was only inches from mine. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, and the intensity of his golden eyes made it difficult to breathe normally.
Then his expression changed again.
He inhaled deeply, studying my scent with growing fascination.
"You smell like Royal Blood," he murmured. "Like Silver Blood. Like a princess."
His gaze sharpened.
"What are you hiding, little mouse?"
For ten years, I had been forced to remain silent, obey orders, and endure humiliation. I had learned to swallow my fear because resistance only brought more suffering.
But standing before the man responsible for my imprisonment, I discovered a courage I had never known I possessed.
"I am no one's mate," I declared, forcing myself to meet his eyes. "Let me go. I am free."
For a moment, Kael simply stared at me.
Then he smiled.
It was not a warm or reassuring expression. His smile was dark and unsettling, carrying the confidence of a man who had rarely encountered anything he could not control.
"Free?" he repeated, almost amused.
He reminded me that I had spent ten years inside his stronghold, eating the food provided by his pack and breathing the air of his territory. Now that he had discovered our supposed mate bond, he appeared convinced that my escape meant nothing.
I was no longer merely a prisoner to him.
I was something he believed belonged to him.
He leaned toward my neck, his attention settling on the rapid pulse beneath my skin.
"You are marked by the Alpha now," he said. "Whether you like it or not."
Before I could move away, his sharp canines pierced the skin of my neck.
Pain shot through me.
I screamed, recoiling from the sudden bite. It was not the complete mating bond, but it was a claim—a deliberate attempt to establish his authority over me.
And that was the final mistake he made.
The moment his teeth broke my skin, the power suppressed inside me for ten years erupted.
The Blood Moon shone overhead as an overwhelming force surged through my body. My crescent mark blazed with silver light, and energy radiated outward in a brilliant blue-white wave.
The lake froze.
In a single instant, its entire surface transformed into solid ice. The temperature plunged, and the surrounding air shimmered with supernatural energy.
The force of my awakening struck Kael like an invisible explosion, throwing him several feet backward.
He landed hard on the newly frozen lake.
For the first time since I had encountered him, the mighty Alpha looked completely powerless.
He stared at me, one hand raised to his mouth. My blood stained his lips, and his golden eyes widened with a mixture of astonishment, hunger, and uncertainty.
"What are you?" he whispered.
I stood in the center of the frozen lake, trembling as my power continued to radiate around me. My long black hair lifted in the supernatural wind, my silver eyes glowed fiercely, and the crescent mark on my forehead shone like a miniature moon.
Beneath the transparent ice, the water itself seemed to contain a mysterious silver-blue light.
I had spent ten years believing that I was insignificant, an unwanted orphan whose existence mattered to no one.
Yet the power flowing through me was unlike anything I had ever imagined.
I still did not know my name, my origins, or the reason someone had imprisoned me with enchanted silver. I could not explain why my eyes had changed or why the Blood Moon had awakened such extraordinary abilities.
But I understood one thing.
I was not ordinary.
Tears slipped down my cheeks, freezing in the bitter air as I looked at Kael.
"I don't know," I answered quietly. "But I am not your prisoner anymore."
Kael slowly rose to his feet.
The shock in his expression began to fade, replaced by a frightening intensity. He no longer looked at me as though I were merely an impossible discovery. His gaze suggested that he had become fascinated by the very power that had just thrown him across the lake.
He started walking toward me.
Each step sent cracks spreading through the ice beneath his boots, yet he continued without hesitation.
His eyes remained fixed on mine.
"Oh, you are not a prisoner anymore, my little Princess," he declared.
His voice carried the certainty of a man who had already decided how our story would unfold.
"You are my Queen."
He moved closer, undeterred by the supernatural force surrounding me.
"And I am never letting you go."
The frozen lake glittered beneath the Blood Moon, holding the reflection of a mysterious girl with silver eyes and a crescent-shaped mark.
For ten years, I had been hidden in darkness.
Now, my power had awakened, my true identity remained a mystery, and the most dangerous Alpha in the North had discovered that I was his mate.
But if I truly possessed the blood of a lost royal line, then the secrets buried within my past could threaten far more than Kael's control over me.
And if the Beast of the North believed he could claim me simply because fate had connected our lives, he was about to discover that the girl he had imprisoned might be the one person capable of bringing his entire kingdom to its knees.
To be continued…
