CHAPTER 13

CATHERINE :
The next morning I woke up and saw that Edward is getting ready.
"Where are you going? It's still early morning, right?"
"We are going out. Get ready fast. And wear something comfortable."
I got ready and stood waiting for him near the garage. He promised that he will be there by nine after taking care of some things. He is finally here. Zach is with him carrying a bag.
"Hey, Cathy."
"Hey, Zach."
Edward went to his car and Zach followed him and dumped the bag he is carrying in the back and got in. I watched them and Edward called me.
"Are you coming or not, sweetheart?"
"I'm coming."
I went and stood stubbornly near the door. Edward looked at me and sighed.
"Want me to open your door?"
"No. I want to drive."
He looked at me shocked and shook his head.
"No way, you are not driving."
"Why not?"
"Because you can't."
"I can drive. I know how to drive. I can drive better than you."
"Well , your best friend Emily said that you can't drive properly. So, I'm not going to let you drive."
"Come on. I can drive. She is just scared of my driving. Please. Please."
He sighed and nodded.
"Fine. You can drive in the evening while we are coming back."
"Thank you."
I jumped on him and hugged him and showered his face with kisses. I got in and he started the car and it roared to life. It's the best sound and it's been a while since I heard that sound. He drove south towards the outskirts of the city. We reached a horse ranch in two hours. It's really far from the castle. I jumped out of the car excitedly and went to Edward's side. I grabbed the keys from his hand and kept them in my bag.
"Hey!"
He exclaimed.
"What?"
I asked innocently, too innocently.
"Give me the keys back."
"No, you promised me that I can drive the car while going back and I'm not giving the keys back. You will never let me drive I know that. So, I will keep these with me."
Zach started laughing and went past us. I followed him and Edward followed me with a scowl on his face. Finally we reached a small cottage and a big barn and the place was surrounded with fields as far as I can see. I went on walking towards the barns leaving the guys behind. I wandered inside and saw a beautiful horse. It is black and it looked so beautiful. I want to try riding it. There is a boy there brushing the horses. I went near him. He is really young. When he saw me he stopped brushing the horse and stood nervously in front of me.
"Hi. I'm Catherine. What is your name?"
"I'm Jesse."
He is still nervous so I thought to talk to him.
"She is quite beautiful."
"She is the only girl we have in here."
"Really?"
"Yes. And she is fast."
"Wow."
I stood there with him and chatted for a while about the other horses. Edward and Zach finally came inside with a man in his mid forties.
"He owns this ranch. His name is Francis."
Zach introduced him to me. I smiled and introduced myself. Then Zach choose his horse and went off into the fields surrounding the ranch. Edward choose a horse and took me with him. He helped me onto the horse and climbed in behind me. We slowly moved in a nearby field. By lunch time I'm pretty confident in riding a horse. Edward is a great teacher. Zach returned and we sat near a tree in the fields and ate our lunch which Zach brought from the palace. We had a nice picnic. For a prince he sure acts like a normal person sometimes. I'm really enjoying the time spent here with Edward. After lunch we roamed around in the fields and Zach left us alone. When it is nearly evening we returned to the car. Zach looked tensed.
"What happened?"
"A call from the palace. They just received a death threat against Cathy. We need to leave now."
We saw two cars coming towards the ranch. They are still quite away and I am getting excited. It feels like forever since I'm behind the wheel of a car and I'm really excited. I unlocked the doors and Edward opened the door, got behind the wheel and closed the door. I opened the same door and told him calmly.
"Move over."
"No, give me the keys and get in."
"No, move over."
"I'm not letting you drive. They will catch us. We will not reach the palace in time. Now get in and give me the keys."
"No."
"It's not time for jokes, Cat. Get in the goddamn car."
"No."
"Guys shut it. Edward move over. She is as stubborn as you. We will do something. Just move over."
Zach shouted. He moved to the passenger seat and glared at me.
"Seat belts boys."
I looked at them and they strapped their seat belts.
"Now this should be fun."
I started the car and the engine roared to life. I sighed and smiled to myself.
"Step on it, Cathy."
Zach yelled. I stepped on the gas and made a quick exit out of the parking space just as the two cars came to a halt in the parking. I heard them cursing and follow us. They are gaining on us and it's getting on Edward and Zach's nerves. I can practically feel their tension.
"Let's see how fast this baby can go."
I stepped on the gas and we sped down the highway. They still followed us.
"Zach, you didn't get anything."
Edward demanded Zach.
"Well, I got a gun but I can't get a clear shot from here."
"Shit."
After driving for a while I saw a big truck coming from the other lane. I quickly shifted gears and went in the opposite lane and drove straight for the truck.
"What the hell are you doing, Cathy?"
Zach shouted.
"Shut up."
I saw that the cars were following me in this lane. I drove towards the truck and just when the truck was about to hit us I moved out of the way. One of the cars following us hit the truck and the truck dragged it for a while and stopped. One down one to go.
"Holy s**t. Where did you learn how to drive like that?"
"I used to race back home in Danny's car. And I'm good at it. But Emily is scared of my driving and never lets me drive."
I saw a turn coming ahead and accelerated. The other car also accelerated and followed us. At the last second I jerked the wheel to the side and we turned but the other car crashed into the guard rail.
"Wow."
"But how?"
Edward and Zach both exclaimed this after a while.
"I used to race back home. It's been a year and I'm a bit rusty but I can still drive."
"Ok."
"I'm sorry. I didn't tell you before. I thought of telling you before but we were still getting to know each other and I forgot about it after a while. I'm really sorry."
"So, did you win any races?"
"I always win. But no one knew that I'm racing. Only my best friends know about it."
Saying this I drove back to the palace. Mom is waiting for us along with Dad and Ari. She hugged us when we are back checking to see if we are hurt or not and we left to our room after reassuring everyone that we are alright. We reached our room and after taking a shower we stood in the balcony watching the garden.
"Do you want to race again?"
Edward asked me quite suddenly.
"What?"
"Do you want to race again? I mean there is this race being held in our country every year and it will be in a month. Do you want to participate?"
"Yes, Edward. Yes."
I shouted and kissed him and he kissed me back.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you."
He is encouraging me to do the things I like. Just when I thought I couldn't love him more and he does these things.
"I love you."
"I love you too, kitten."
