Chapter 1
A year and a half ago Twenty-five-year-old Doctor Zendaya Hansley was waiting for her parents, Doctor Rumi and Doctor Alora Hansley, at their vacation home in Martha's Vineyard. Her father was flying their light aircraft. When her parents didn't arrive on time, Zendaya tried to call their cell phones. When neither parent answered, she contacted the Coast Guard. Two hours later, the Coast Guard started a search party. Eliam, Midori, and Kora are Zendaya’s cousins on her father’s side. They’re stationed overseas and wanted to come. Zendaya talked them out of coming. She wasn’t going to be alone. Stephanie and Trinty, her best friends, flew to Martha's Vineyard to be with her. They kept trying to get her to eat and sleep, but she refused to do either. Zendaya sits on the sofa in the Cobbler's position, staring at her cell phone and house phone on her thighs. Stephanie and Trinity jumped when Zendaya's cell phone rang. Trinity wanted to call a doctor to examine her, hoping he could give her a sedative. Stephanie threw that idea out of the window when she saw the stare Zendaya gave them. The two women didn't realize they were talking that loudly. Stephanie leans close to Trinty. "She'll kill us when she wakes up." "Yep, that sounds about right." Trinity nods and sticks a carrot in her mouth. Zendaya didn't cry and only said “okay” several times before hanging up. Then she starts staring at the phones again. The call was to inform her that they had located fragments of her parents' plane using side-scan sonar. No bodies had been discovered at that time. Stephanie is about to ask Zendaya what the caller said. About that time, breaking news flashed across the television screen, and she and Trinity gasped, looking at parts of the plane divers had found lying on the ocean bank. The two women kept looking between the television and a non-emotional Zendaya. Three days later, divers located Rumi and Alora's bodies. Both were still holding hands and strapped in their seats. When Zendaya received that call, she took a long bubble bath and slipped on a black dress. She and her friends went to the county medical examiner's office. Zendaya wanted to see her parents before the autopsies were performed. Her friends didn't want her to go through that experience, but also knew there wasn't anything they could say to make her change her mind. Two days later, the county medical examiner found they had died upon impact. Zendaya was happy to hear that because she didn’t want to live knowing her parents had suffered. The probable cause of the crash was the pilot's failure. The report said her father couldn’t maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water that night, resulting from spatial disorientation. Zendaya hired a private plane and sat between her parents' caskets with a hand on each one on the way back to Atlanta, Georgia. Trinity and Stephanie had never seen her so numb. When they arrived, some of Zendaya’s family members were waiting for them. “Damn, look who crawled from under their rocks. Oh, this isn’t good.” Trinity shakes her head, looking at Zendaya’s Aunt Olympia walking in front of her husband, Judah, and two sons, Mark and Warren. Olympia is Alora's older sister. She has installed in her head that she's the head of the family. No one pays her any attention. Alora always nodded to her when she was talking, but wasn’t listening to her. Zendaya is standing behind the hearse. "I love you two so much. At least you're still together. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. I know you’ll always be watching over me." She kisses her parents' caskets and curtsies. She stares at the hearse as it drives away. She takes a deep breath and turns to see Stephanie and Trinity with their hands up. They're blocking her aunt, uncle, and cousins. She shakes her head, looking at her aunt, who is hitting her friends' hands. She walks behind Trinity and Stephanie. "Thanks for trying. But I got this," she frowns, looking at her aunt. "Where are you here?" "We were waiting on you to bring your parents home." Olympia points at the two girls and hugs Zendaya. "Don't worry. We're here. Your real family is here." Trinity leans close to Stephanie. “Where were they when we were waiting, and our girl was zoned out? What does she mean by real family?" “I know, right? You know she's only here because she wants something. As always. Hell, we're Zen's real family. I've never liked that woman." Stephanie turns her nose up, looking at the woman. “Yep, that sounds about right. Neither have I. Old skank.” Trinity rolls her eyes at Olympia and then at the woman’s husband and two sons. Olympia is still hugging Zendaya. "It's all decided, me, your uncle, and your cousins will move into the house. We can't leave it empty. Not with the problems with squatters.” Zendaya quickly removes her aunt's arms from her and steps away, shaking her head. "You're not running anything. You, your husband, and those Bebe kids of yours will keep your narrow tails in your house or wherever you live. That was my parents’ house, now it's my house, and I'm the one who will live in it. As for making arrangements for my parents. Stephanie and Trinity will help me. Since they were there for me and the only ones who were concerned about my parents and they are my real family. One of them will inform all of you of the time and place. You can come or not. It doesn't matter to me. Don't come around me, I want to be alone, and I'm not up to playing nice with any of you.” Zendaya points at each one of her relatives. “Now, if you all will excuse us." She gave her aunt a stern look and walked away. A week after she buried her parents, the Will was read. As she suspected, her aunt was the first person there. Olympia had called Mr. Harper's law firm every day, asking when the Will would be read. He refused to give any information until he spoke with Zendaya, and she permitted the lawyer to give her aunt the information. Zendaya always knew her aunt was greedy as hell. Alora and Olympia's parents divided their assets between them. Alora invested and used her inheritance wisely. Olympia went through her inheritance so fast. About seven months had passed her aunt was knocking on her parents' door, begging to borrow money. Alora loaned her money a couple of times but stopped around the fourth or fifth time. Rumi and Alora realized that if they didn't end it there, Olympia would continue. That was one thing they weren't going to tolerate. The day Mr. Harper read the Will, Olympia arrived two hours ahead of time. She's furious when she finds out she wasn’t mentioned in it. She's about to storm out of the office until she hears he has done as Rumi and Alora requested. She was to sell her father's dental practice and her mother's psychiatric clinic. The money had been deposited in an account they had set up for Zendaya. After the meeting, Olympia was buttering up to Zendaya. Telling her how much the family will be there to help her go through her parents' belongings and whatever else she needs them to do. They should sit down and discuss what to do with her inheritance. She believes it should be divided between Zendaya and her since they are the only family Alora has. Zendaya couldn't take listening to that woman's bullshit and snap. She told Olympia she didn't need or want her help. As far as the inheritance goes, it's hers, and she's not dividing it with anyone. Her parents would have left it to her if they wanted her to have something. That was the last time she saw her aunt and her crazy, lazy family on her mother's side. "Present" Zendaya is now living in the house she grew up in. Before her parents' death, they had started renovating it two months before their death. Zendaya finished renovating, but made changes. She opened a veterinary clinic in Buckhead, which is only fifteen minutes from her house. She’s sitting in the den listening to some jazz and looking at two red birds splashing around in the birdbath. Her phone beeps, and she frowns when she sees it’s from Judson Colby. Zendaya dated him for a month. He kept pressuring her to go to the next level. The night she informed him she wasn’t ready to have s*x with him. Judson went on a cussing spree and told her she'll never find a man like him. Zendaya laughed in his face. "I hope not. If I did them, I'm screwed big time." She ended their relationship. It was something about him that caused her not to trust him. But Judson refuses to accept that any woman can break up with him. He has made marrying Zendaya his life mission. Judson also said if he can't have her, then nobody will. She deletes the text without reading it. “I should have followed my intuition and never gone out with your stalking ass. I’m never dating again until I find the two men that I dreamed about when I was thirteen.” She walks over to the bar to make a margarita. " I need to get out of the house tonight." She calls Trinity and Stephanie to see if they could have a girls' night out. It didn't take much convincing to get her two friends to agree. The three young ladies have been friends since they were kids. They were inseparable back then and still are. Stephanie is a realtor and owns a realtor company. She's married to Trinity's brother, Trent Bartley, and has a two-year-old daughter named Josey. Trent is an attorney and works at his family law firm. Trinity is an attorney like her brother and also works in the family law firm. She’s married to Doctor Joshua Dorfman, who’s a Urologist. They have a four-year-old son named Jason and a two-year-old daughter named Trina. An hour later, Trinity and Stephanie were driving up Zendaya’s driveway to pick her up. All three were in the mood for dancing. They decided on H2O, it's one of the hottest clubs in Atlanta.
