Ira just packed one bag with some of her clothes the next morning and got ready to leave with Sarena. Before Ira had woken up, Sarena had already prepared the brekkie and was ready to leave.
She gesture Ira to sit at the table while she passed on the plate full of eggs, bacon and toast to her. “I have had mine. Why don’t you finish this while I go for a quick visit to one of my friends? It is important for us to travel to Myponga.”
“Okay.” Ira shrugged. “If we are going to take my car we will need to refuel it.”
“That won’t be needed. We will travel the witch’s way. It would be faster.” She winked and vanished with a c***k.
Ira rolled her eyes and continued to munch on her food.
That evening they reached Myponga directly in the lawns of a huge mansion. This was the first time Ira had travelled in this manner with Sarena. Her body felt fluid and compressed as if squeezed into a tight space. She held onto Sarena for her dear life and relaxed only when her feet touched the ground.
It had taken them only a few minutes to cover the distance of almost 800 kilometres. Witchcraft was awesome! If only...
The enormous wooden doors of the mansion were open as Ira stepped inside.
“We have reached. James is staying here. Give this to James. You are on your own now. Bye!” Sarena stopped at the threshold of the mansion, handed her a small box and said a quick goodbye.
“But Nana…” Before Ira could speak any further the old witch had vanished.
Very typical of her! Ira signed and looked around. The opulence of the place was striking. What is James doing here? Who are these people?
Putting the box in the outer pocket of her bag, she slowly walked through the foyer into a massive living room.
It had a huge chandelier dangling from the ceiling. Even during the daytime light bounced off the crystals lighting up the space.
Expensive paintings graced the walls. One staircase started from the farther end, probably going to the bedrooms. From the outside, it looked like a 3-floor mansion.
Might have more than a dozen bedrooms, she thought. What has James gotten into?
The room had doors on all sides. She would need some time to understand the layout of the space. She walked towards the staircase and cried out, “hello?”
A smallish looking girl hustled over to her. “Hello miss. Who are you? Are you here to meet someone?”
She smelled different. As if a dog has been out in the summer sun. Thankfully the scent was light so did not actually gag Ira. In fact when Ira observed closely the place itself had a weird scent.
“Oh hello to you too! I am here to meet James. Do you know where I can find him?”
James’ name elicited a strange reaction. The girl suddenly shifted nervously on her feet and chewed her lower lip. With eyes as big as saucers she nodded. So she did know about James.
“Sh...sure miss. P...Please leave your bag here and follow me.” She stammered nervously and started climbing the stairs. Ira followed.
On the first floor, the girl knocked at a wooden door. Ira heard muffled voices from the other end. One appeared to be James' but she couldn't be sure. A woman shouted, “come in!”
Is he alright? Her only thought at that time was James’ safety. Sarena had scared her enough. The tiny girl had gone in and was explaining about Ira wanting to meet James ‘Sir’.
Ira scoffed hearing the title and sure enough, heard James’ reply…
“Drop the sir. I am not an ordained knight! Call me James” His voice teased.
That's my bro! Ira smiled to herself.
“Where is the lady?” A woman’s voice asked
“Here I am!” She declared and waltzed into the room. Relieved that he was alright she jumped into James' arms and chided. “Rascal! I missed you. Where the f**k is your phone? Why are you not responding? Where is the camper van? What is this place? Why do people smell weird here?”
She couldn’t stop herself. From the time Sarena had told her about the camper van vanishing and James being in danger she had been worried sick. They were a close family and she couldn’t imagine anything happening to him.
The room fell into a deadly silence. She was perceptive. Something was terribly wrong. It felt awkward as if she wasn't welcome here. As if she was hurting someone.
She looked around and saw a beautiful girl with long wavy hair sitting on the bed in front of James. The girl stared at Ira with wide eyes. Her crystal grey eyes shined with controlled tears. She looked like someone had hit her with a hammer.
What is wrong here? Unless… She mentally facepalmed herself. f**k! I am such an i***t! She could hear James saying something but her thoughts had already moved on to the embarrassing situation she had gotten herself into.
The only way ahead was to apologise. The pretty girl looked quite distraught! “Oh my god! I am so sorry! Is he your boyfriend? I didn’t mean to barge in like this! I wanted to surprise him. Did I interrupt you guys?”
Then she spotted the man sitting on a chair next to the bed with his mouth wide open in astonishment.
She gasped. What the crazy f**k has been going on? Since when did James get into threesomes? How would I know? I never inquired about his s****l partners. Eyew! What a disaster!
She turned around with eyes wide in horror. It was as if she had never known her little brother. “Were all of you busy in….?”
James held her arms and shook her. He could read her like a book.
They had grown up together and they were partners in crime. On top of that, he was the most accomplished witch of their time. “Ira stop! For God’s sake! Your imagination is running wild. Before you speak any further and create an embarrassing story in your head, please let me introduce you guys.” He pleaded.
She had to give in to him. There had to be a different explanation.
Finally, James introduced her to the girl on the bed Kirra, his girlfriend and they were going to get engaged the next day. That’s why Sarena had been so adamant about her visiting James ASAP. Kirra’s expressions softened as Kirra realised that Ira was James’ sister.
Ira liked the girl immediately. Her crystal grey eyes looked at James with so much love. Ira could feel her emotions clearly. Which was very strange as till now she could read the feelings of only her family members. Although James did not tell her anything about Kirra being his soulmate, she had a suspicion.
Kirra was an Alpha of the Blood moon clan and she had a looming danger. Some Rogue king was trying to constantly attack their territory and take over Kirra’s land. He had also kidn*pped Kirra’s best friend and her delta. The man next to her bed was Noah, her Beta.
Kirra wanted to strike up an alliance to fight with the powerful Rogue King and Ira was happy to help. For that Kirra had to understand the werewolf politics and the formalities of inviting the clans to collaborate.
They had loads and loads of data to go through. Ira was overjoyed. She could help Kirra. Her speed in reading and the art of cataloguing and retaining the required data would come in handy. So she volunteered to help Kirra.
This is when she realised why Sarena had brought her here. It was to help James and his mate! The crazy old bat could have told me directly! What was the point of keeping me in the dark and making me so anxious about James' safety?
That entire night she helped Kirra memorise and understand the workings of werewolf clans in Australia. She herself wasn’t aware of the intricate governance and the hierarchies in the werewolves. She was amazed. It looked like a whole new system.
With seven great clans governing smaller packs and managing the development, law and order amongst wolves in the entirety of Australia, it was like a whole new world.
Now she was scared for James’ life. Kirra’s grandad was the werewolf why the rest of the witch world was in hiding and yet James was here, living right under his snout.
Obviously, he and Sarena had a plan but she wasn’t privy to it.
So she did the only best thing that she knew. She read through all the available material. In fact the next morning she read through a few important books from the packhouse library.
Her skills with books and reading were exceptional. This helped.
She and Kirra shacked up in James' room late at night while James went over to the basement. The next morning she woke up to a loud knocking on the door.
She had had this weird start to the day by meeting two very young werewolf girls who had informed her about a conspiracy to kidnap Kirra. She made sure that James had access to her mind for him to know the exact situation.
Once the girls were gone she woke Kirra up. There were very few people she developed an instant liking to and Kirra was one of them. She was still talking to Kirra when James almost threw her out of the room asking her to freshen up.
Bloody James! She angrily stomped her feet and headed off to her room to get showered and ready for the day. On her way to meet James and Kirra again, she felt the familiar pull of books.
Following her instinct, she headed to the packhouse library which was on the ground floor. The library door was at the back of the staircase. The library had a high ceiling and was lined with numerous racks of books.
She closed her eyes and tuned in to the hum of the books that would guide her to what she needed. She almost lost the track of time reading about the ancient history of Kirra's family but thankfully her stomach rumbled pulling her back into reality.
Within minutes she was back in James' room chatting up with Kirra and James about Kirra's history.
Kirra was the first female Alpha in centuries. That's why she was mated with James. She needed someone who could rule the pack as an equal. Balancing the feminine and the masculine energies around her.
While Ira and the rest were talking they got news of an attack on Kirra's clan. Their Southern border needed reinforcements and Noah had to go.
For Kirra to invoke the Treaty of Unity her Mate needed to be present in the meeting. Noah was a good strategist so he had to go over to help with the fight. Ira decided to accompany him to assist.
The sooner the fight was over, James and Kirra would be safe. After reading about Kirra, after meeting her and knowing her, it was clear that she was James' soulmate.
She was Ira's sister already and Ira would not allow anyone to take this happiness away from James and their family. Her unwavering determination had James acceding to her going with Noah.
She borrowed James' travel bubble and his pet Draco. James changed her dress into a T-shirt and a pair of denims. She and Noah stepped into the travel bubble to go to the battlefield.
Her ears hummed and excitement coursed through her veins making her dizzy. This was the first time she was going to get into a real battle.
She sure had come a long way...
