Future Plans

Monike Monike woke up after her surgery. Her head felt heavy, not the same kind of pain that she had after the accident, but an uneasy heaviness. As soon as she was up, Doctor Maggie arrived with a big smile. She checked all the charts and the vitals and announced, “you are doing great. If things remain like this, you may leave the hospital tonight. I still want you to visit me every alternate day for a few days, but I am sure that you could go back home in seven to ten days.” Monike smiled back at her and asked something that was bothering her, “Do I need to come back for a surgery to remove these plates?” She touched the dressing on her head. “No, not needed unless you really want to do it. The plates get integrated with the skull and they have a minimal chance of getting rejected by your body. So you won’t have any trouble living your normal life.” A nurse walked in with a bag. And Maggie continued, “Kumah left this bag with the nurse at the nursing station. You can change your clothes if you want to.” Monike broke out into a genuine smile. She hated the dull blue patient gown and was dying to get into something more fashionable. Bless her servant. Now she could look human again. She nodded, indicating for the bag to be kept next to her bed. She asked the nurse to leave and faced Maggie again. “One more thing! Is it medically possible for the amnesia to cure itself? I have recollections of what happened before the accident, but I can’t be sure if it is my memory or delusion.” Looked like Doctor Maggie wasn’t sure about the real truth. Since Kumah had mentioned that Ira was staying with Liam and he had the interiors of his living quarters changed, Monike knew something was being hidden from her. Maggie hesitated. “Yes, you may or may not regain your memories and what you are recollecting may or may not be real. Only Liam and you would know what the truth is.” Monike went into her own thoughts. She hadn’t seen Miriam since her first apparition on the day Monike had regained consciousness in the hospital. She wasn’t even sure if the apparition was real or if that too was only a hallucination. So she wasn’t sure of her memories either. This was all so confusing and to top that Liam had been very distant lately. “Anything else?” Maggie’s voice brought her back, and she smiled, shaking her head. Once she was alone, she picked up the bag and changed into her dress. The bag also had her toiletries and her cell phone. It was good that she told Kumah what she need. The woman was daft but loyal. One of the reasons her brain was coming up with these snippets of memories could be her anger and jealousy of Ira. The plain Jane had landed from nowhere and ruined her life. She flopped on her bed in frustration. If only that night, the hybrids would have killed the d*mbo when they had a chance. She could have been a happy Mrs Liam King right now! She had asked Kumah to connect with Miriam. Kumah had looked around like a scared moused but nodded at her request. She went through her messages and emails. Her dad had sent her an email asking her to call back whenever she was better. No other message or email. The b*stard! Is this how parents are with their children? Her sister had sent a digital card asking her to get well soon and come to Canberra ASAP. Apparently, she had news that would change Monike’s life. Monike rolled her eyes. Melinda was surely up to no good. She would never want Monike to be happy! Monike scowled at the emails and checked through the rest of the messages. Most were from her family, a polite get well soon message. Obviously, they had to be told. Her engagement was postponed! By the way, Liam had been avoiding her, it might almost be cancelled now! There were no messages from any friends. No friends! She scoffed. Her dad had seen to it that she had no friends. Whenever she interacted with anyone without her dad's permission, he made sure that she was punished. The kind of punishments she got! A shudder ran through her spine at the memory. Why the hell can I still remember those? Why haven't I forgotten those traumatic incidents when I banged my head? God could be so cruel! She remembered her last humiliation at Co Ma's swearing in ceremony and decided to call him before he got pissed off and did something terrible to her. Interestingly she found a cryptic message from an unknown number. ‘When you are sad, reach out. Get well soon!’ She tried looking for the contact details in various apps and online search engines but found nothing. She would have gone ahead and pulled in a favour from a secret cop ally, but Liam arrived and she kept the phone away. The guy looked genuinely happy. She had never seen him smile so much. Something nagged at the back of her head. They had enjoyed some fantastic times together and yet she had never seen the smile reach to his cold eyes. So Kumah must be right. He has found his mate in Ira.! When he did not oppose or deny her guesses, her heart broke a thousand pieces along with the engagement. She felt like tearing the b*tch Ira apart. She couldn’t force him into a wedding that he did not want. No wonder her sister was so happy and her father wanted to speak to her. He must have a backup plan. How she hated her life and everything in it! If only her life would have ended with the accident. She tried to get permission from Liam to stay with the wolves. For the first time, she had felt safe in her life. She knew they resented her, but no one ever assaulted her or took advantage of her! When Liam still insisted on her returning back to the humans, she sighed and turned around. She did not want him to see the tears in her eyes. She wasn’t a broken woman! She had seen the worst and survived. Ira was just an obstacle! If she had to stay away from her dad, she would do whatever was necessary. Now she just had to figure out how she would help herself, with the b*tch Miriam going MIA. *****
