Chapter 15 Usually I had no problem falling asleep, but on this particular night I tossed and turned, got up to pace the floors, and then returned to bed to resume tossing and turning. At five A.M. I finally fell into a deep sleep, but it didn’t last long. The sound of the telephone ringing woke me. A glance at my bedside clock through bleary eyes showed me I’d only been asleep about half an hour. I flung back the covers and bounded out of bed, staggering until I caught my balance. My heart thudded painfully. Was someone ill, injured? Dying? I felt sick at the thought of getting word that Tanner had been killed. I barely took the time to step into a pair of slippers and grab up my dressing gown before I pelted down the stairs to the kitchen. Why haven’t I got an extension for the bed
