CHAPTER ONE : BLOOD AND SILVER
CHAPTER ONE: BLOOD AND SILVER
The night I turned eighteen, my home didn't just fall—it burned.
Rain slammed against the stained-glass windows of the Great Hall, but it wasn't enough to drown out the roar of the fires gutting the outer courtyard. The air inside reeked of copper, woodsmoke, and ozone.
I stood near the edge of the central dais in my white silk ceremony gown, my fingers white-knuckling my father’s ceremonial dagger.
Tonight was supposed to be my Coming-of-Age.
Tonight, the Moon Goddess was supposed to grant me a wolf and reveal my fated mate.
Instead, war had breached our gates.
"Aria! Stay behind the line!"
A warrior shoved past me, drawing his broadsword as timber cracked overhead. Panic churned through the crowd of elders, nobles, and panicked pack members scrambling for the rear exits.
"Father!" I screamed over the din, my eyes scanning the smoke. "Mother!"
Through the haze, I saw him.
Alpha Rowan Vale lay motionless at the base of the high seats. The silver crest of our pack was painted across his chest in his own blood.
My breath hitched. My father—the man who felt as immovable as the mountains—was gone.
"Papa..."
I took a frantic step toward him, but a heavy, calloused hand clamped around my wrist, jerking me back.
"Don't look," a rough voice rasped.
I whipped around, my dagger instantly raised.
"Lower the blade, Aria," Kane said quietly.
Kane Alexander Draven. Son of the Crystal Moon Alpha, and the heir I’d spent three years secretly watching from across council tables and training yards. We had grown up in the same high circles, bound by our fathers' alliance, but he had always been distant—a cold, brilliant soldier who treated me with quiet, formal politeness.
Until now.
The moment his fingers tightened around my arm, a blinding wave of heat detonated in my chest.
It wasn't a spark. It was a roar.
My breath caught in my throat as the bond snapped into place, anchoring itself directly to my soul.
Mate.
The word echoed through my mind so loudly it drowned out the screaming. For one split second, the blood in my veins ran hot, and my silent wolf stirred beneath my ribs for the first time in eighteen years.
I looked up into his dark eyes. "Kane..."
He felt it. His jaw clenched, his pupils dilating as the mark settled into his skin.
For a heartbeat, I thought fate had given me a miracle in the middle of a slaughterhouse.
Then Kane's eyes shifted.
He didn't look at my dead father. He didn't look at the burning rafters. His gaze moved past me, locking onto a figure standing in the shadow of the marble pillars.
Claire.
My best friend.
Her dress was spotless, her face pale, but her eyes were fixed on Kane with an understanding that made my stomach drop into a freefall.
Before I could process it, Kane released my wrist as if my skin burned him. He stepped forward onto the blood-slicked stone, his voice cutting through the noise of the collapsing hall with terrifying, absolute clarity.
"I, Kane Alexander Draven, heir of the Crystal Moon Pack, reject you, Aria Celestine Vale, as my mate."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
The mate bond severed with a sickening, violent tearing feeling. A ragged gasp tore from my lungs as I collapsed to one knee, clutching my chest as the phantom fire burned through me.
Kane flinched—his own face turning pale as the rejection took root—but he didn't reach out. He didn't offer a hand.
Murmurs rippled through the fleeing crowd.
"A wolf-less omega... did she really think he'd keep her?"
"Look at her. She can't even stand."
I forced my head up, my vision swimming with heat and anger. "Why?"
Kane leaned down, his voice a low, urgent hiss meant only for me. "Because my father’s enforcers are already surrounding the perimeter. They aren't here to allied-rescue Silver Crest, Aria. They came to wipe out the Vale line. If I claim you, you die tonight."
I stared at him, my heart breaking into sharp, jagged pieces. "You're lying. You chose her." I looked past him toward Claire, who couldn't even meet my eyes. "You threw me away to protect her."
Kane's jaw tightened, but he didn't deny it. "I am giving you the only thing I can right now: an exit. Run."
Heavy oak doors shattered at the far end of the hall. Four armored enforcers burst through, dragging a woman in chains between them.
"Mother!" I yelled, pushing myself up from the floor.
"Alpha Selene Vale is seized under order of Council Draven!" the lead enforcer roared over the chaos. "Charged with high treason and the murder of Alpha Rowan!"
"She didn't do it!" I screamed, lunging forward, but Kane planted himself firmly in my path, his chest an unyielding wall.
"Step aside, Kane!" I spat, raising the dagger between us. "Let me go to her!"
"Look at her, Aria!" Kane growled, catching my hand by the wrist, forcing the blade down.
I looked.
My mother’s face was bruised, her silver gown torn, but as her eyes locked onto mine across the roaring hall, she didn't look afraid. She shook her head slightly, her lips forming a single, silent word over the sound of dying fires:
Run.
"If you go to her, they lock you in the same cage," Kane whispered harshly, his fingers digging into my arm before he roughly shoved me toward the shadowed side corridor. "Get out of Silver Crest. Go west. Don't look back, and never use your real name again."
I stumbled back into the darkness of the archway.
I looked at Kane—the boy I had loved, the mate who had rejected me, the liar standing on my father's blood.
I looked at Claire, standing safely behind him.
And I looked at my mother being dragged into the storm.
"I hope she was worth your soul, Kane," I whispered, my voice trembling with a terrifying, cold focus.
His eyes cracked with a sudden, sharp pain, but I didn't give him the satisfaction of an answer.
I turned and sprinted down the burning servant's passage, breaking out into the freezing torrential rain outside. Behind me, the only life I had ever known was turning to ash.
I had no wolf. I had no pack. My father was dead, my mother was in chains, and my mate had traded me away.
I wiped the mixture of rain and blood from my face with the back of my hand and looked toward the dark mountains in the West.
They thought they had destroyed the last Vale.
They were wrong.
I wouldn't die in these woods. I wouldn't hide forever.
One day, I would come back for my mother, for my pack, and for Kane's crown.
And when I did, I wouldn't ask for mercy.
I would take everything.
