Caden's pov
I stood, watching with a plain face as my soon-to-be bride kept walking towards me. The elders cheered on as she approached.
It was their damned fault I was getting married to a complete nobody, a stranger, a wolfless weakling.
If only they had given me more time, I would have found Lilith and married her instead.
Their threats became serious when, two days ago, they came together and told me to get a bride, or forfeit my position.
“The pack needs a Luna, and if you don't get one before or at your wedding.”
“I need more time please.” I begged them.
“Time is what we have given you for the past two years. There is no more time for you.”
They stormed off, the weight of their threats hanging in the air.
I could not let that happen, something had to be done.
Jack, my Beta came in.
“I have good news, King Caden.”
My face lit up at once, only one thing could make me feel so.
“Have you found her?”
“Yes, we've got information on her whereabouts.”
“Great, let's go get her.”
We've been searching in vain for Lilith, my mate who rejected me and ran off with another man.
I was hurt, but I didn't mind, i was deeply in love with her and wanted her back. If it wasn't Lilith, it couldn't be anybody else.
All attempts to get her back proved abortive. It was finding a needle in a haystack. She didn't want to be found.
Just a day before my wedding, I was lost about what to do. I not only did not have a bride, I was about to lose my position as the Lycan King as well.
“What are you going to do now? The elders won't back out of their threat. I overheard them saying it this morning.” Jack said, concern etched on his face.
It was all too much for me to bear, my head was filled with everything at the same time.
“No!!!!!” I thundered.
I ran out of the mansion, not thinking, not having any idea where I was going.
I just ran, my legs barely touching the ground as I sped through the woods.
I stopped just on the hill that oversaw all the ice-fall pack.
The cool night breeze did nothing to calm my restless mind.
“Somebody help” a shrill voice cried out from beneath.
My eyes scanned below until it landed on a young woman fighting for her life.
A young man was dragging his feet. I looked away, not ready to interfere with lowlifes.
Something drew me to her, something forced me to turn to her cry for help once again.
Just when he was about to land te final strike that would end her life.
I jumped from the top, and kicked him off easily.
He looked at me maniacally. I sighed, I was about to get dirty fighting this tramp.
The woman's faint breathing reached my ears. I could help her, she could be a useful asset to me.
The wild man charged at me again with the knife. I dodged it, and squeezed his hand hard, crushing his bones in the process.
He yelped in pain. It didn't stop me from damaging the hand.
I let him go, and he ran off like a dog with its tail between his legs.
The woman's eyes were already closed, I lifted her in my arms and took her to the hospital.
Something about her turned me off. I sniffed her and scrunched my nose.
It can't be, I can't have this thing as a mate. Impossible.
Now, she was repaying my kindness, by replacing Lilith, my one true mate.
She irritated me, her smile and everything about her, but it's just for now.
She reached the altar smiling, who in this world smiles at being married to a complete stranger.
I expected her to refuse, put up a fight the way she did with that tramp. I guess I was wrong.
The priest moved close to me and whispered.
“What is her name?”
Shoot, I didn't even bother to ask.
“Tell him your name.” I commanded her through clenched teeth.
“Serene,” she said softly.
The priest stood upright.
“Do you, Lycan King Caden, take Serene to be your bride and Luna?”
I held my breath for a second before responding.
“I do.”
“Do you, Serene, take Lycan King Caden as your husband and king?”
“I do,” she said sheepishly, it made me cringe.
“You may kiss the bride.”
Serene was looking all flushed. What was her problem?
Hasn't she been kissed before?
I stooped to her level and kissed her, letting my lips linger for a minute before backing off.
Cheers erupted from the crowd as they all celebrated my wedding.
I took Serene's hand in mine, greeting all who came to grace the ceremony with me.
It took almost the entire night before the last guest left.
Finally, the elderly are satisfied, and my position safe.
“Go find a room for yourself. I'll see you later.” I told Serene.
She looked into my eyes without question and left.
I made my way to the study, and poured myself a drink.
“Lilith” I murmured, twirling the drink.
A movement caught my attention.
“Who's there?”.
Jack my Beta came out of the shadows.
“You shouldn't be drinking, my King, it's your wedding night.”
My eyes flashed red.
“I'm not married, you know it's a sham.”
“I know my king, for the sake of your throne, you have to do it.”
I feel quiet, Serene disgusts me, I don't want her as a mate.
“Do something for me Jack, find Lilith. Once you do, get rid of that fake bride, Serene. Kill her.” I said without mercy.
We heard a gasp at the entrance, someone was listening to our conversation.
“Show yourself, or I'll have your head cut off from your neck.” I threatened.
The figure came out, hands over mouth, hazel eyes shining.
“Serene.”
