Chapter 5 The Drugged Wine!

909 Words
Thanks to Hanson's instruction, Ashley quickly received the advance on three months of her salary, and she used it to pay for Larry's medical expenses. Soon, the day had come for Hanson to visit the cemetery, and she was tagging along with him and Jaelyn, finding out they were there to honor a woman named Shirley Archer, reportedly Hanson's ex-girlfriend. Even with just the reveal of a name, Ashley was able to guess Shirley and Jaelyn were sisters. After the memorial service, they didn't head straight back to the Gardner Manor but to a cellar instead. Through their conversations, Ashley learned that it was Shirley's dream to become an accomplished winemaker and that she had a keen interest in wines. The cellar they visited was a spot Shirley and Hanson frequented during her life and now served as Hanson's place to reminisce every year. Upon reaching the cellar, Jaelyn went to pick out the wine like she'd been here a lot of times. Ashley performed her role as a personal bodyguard, standing quietly in a corner of the cellar, attentively on watch. Jaelyn settled down with a bottle in hand, discussing the wine with Hanson. It was Shirley's favorite. She poured Hanson a glass, her eyes burning with intensity as she gazed across at him. It wasn't difficult for Ashley to deduce from Jaelyn's look that she had strong feelings for Hanson. Hanson, on the other hand, seemed less than thrilled with the glass Jaelyn poured him, his mood somewhat sour. He picked up the glass nonchalantly and downed the wine. Hanson could hold his liquor, and this glass of wine wasn't supposed to have any effect on him. But today, it was odd. After only one drink, his head began to feel heavy, and a burning heat coursed through him. It was like two wild animals rampaging inside his body, threatening to burst out. He grew agitated, tugging at his tie as if that could somehow dampen the overwhelming heat. While Hanson might not have understood the cause of his discomfort, Jaelyn was well aware of what was going on. She'd been watching and now couldn't hide a smug smile when she noticed Hanson's unusual behavior. Even though she knew it was risky, this was her chance, and she had to seize it. Just then, Jaelyn's phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, her expression shifted dramatically. After the caller said something, she hastily exited the cellar to answer it. After Jaelyn stepped out, Ashley noticed Hanson looked off. His cheeks were flushed with a subtle redness, and he seemed to be really irritable. "Mr. Gardner, are you feeling alright?" she softly inquired, stepping closer to check on him. As soon as she touched his arm, she reeled back in shock. Hanson's temperature was alarmingly high, his deep blue eyes now tinged red as if simmered by the internal heat. Hanson was sweating, his presence a haze of humid heat that enveloped Ashley as she drew close. Instinctively, she pulled her hand back, but Hanson's body swayed without her support, prompting her to quickly reach out to steady him again. He glanced at her, his eyes revealing a mix of restraint and frustration that sent a jolt through Ashley's heart. "Take me to my room..." he said hoarsely. Hanson had a suite in the cellar that he always used. Ashley got the keys from the owner and helped him to his fifth-floor room. On their way, Hanson leaned heavily on Ashley. His scalding skin made contact with hers through the thin fabric of his clothes, causing her to break out in a fine sweat as well. Bending slightly forward, Hanson's head rested against Ashley's cheek, his hot breath blowing directly onto her ear and turning it a bright red. Hanson's gaze settled on her ear, now glistening like a ruby. After a moment of silence, he suddenly spoke, "Your ears are red." Ashley, startled, turned around and found herself caught in his intensely passionate gaze. They were so close their breaths mingled. Ashley's heart raced, pounding as if it might leap out of her chest. Ashley, feeling awkward, averted her eyes and dragged Hanson into the room, putting him onto the bed. Maybe it was the alcohol, and once he was on the bed, Hanson closed his eyes and appeared to be asleep. Relieved, Ashley pulled the nearby blanket over him with care. But as she stood to leave, Hanson's hand reached out and clamped around her wrist. His palm was burning hot, his grip strong, and in a dizzying pull, she found herself on the bed, swiftly followed by Hanson flipping over and pinning her down, his arms propping on either side of her body. Even with Ashley's quick reflexes, she hadn't anticipated this from Hanson, and suddenly, her breathing and emotions were in disarray. "Mr. Gardner!" she exclaimed, her voice quivering in a way she hadn't noticed. It seemed like Hanson couldn't even hear her; his eyes were bloodshot, fixing on her like a predator eyeing its prey. Panic set Ashley's heart pounding like thunder; something was seriously wrong with Hanson! Staring down at her, Hanson suddenly leaned closer, his searing lips finding their way to the side of her neck. The instant his lips touched her, Ashley felt all the blood in her body raced to that spot, as if fireworks were exploding in her mind. Without thinking, she aimed a kick straight at Hanson!
