Prologue
Prologue  Christa POV       I lay in bed staring at the white ceiling, recalling everything that has happened since I met Eli. I feel as if my head is spinning with all the changes I have gone through. Just a few months ago, I was starting my first job that ended up leading me to a mate I never even knew I had. My emotions are reeling, and I don't know how I’m feeling about my first shift. I guess I just feel more confused than anything. It's all so foreign to me. These guys have been shifting for most of their lives, so it's second nature to them, but me? I shifted for the first time, and I immediately need to be able to be as strong and tough as them when I shift. I can’t afford to be weak. I don’t have the luxury to take my time and gain the speed and endurance that everyone else gets. Add on the powers that I need to learn to control, and it is so overwhelming.       I see the door open slowly as Amanda peeks her head through the door to check if I’m awake. When our eyes connect, she pushes the door all the way open and walks into the room. “I’m glad you're up! You’ve been out for a while!” “How long have I been out?” “A day.” “A DAY?” I yell, sitting up suddenly. “Why didn't anyone wake me up?” “Because you needed your rest. It takes a lot out of you for your first shift. I actually thought you’d be out for a few days, to be honest.” “Where’s Eli?” I ask as I slowly get out of bed and head to the bathroom. “He’s out helping with training. We had some pups come of age, and the Alpha is always there for their first day of training.” “Oh.” I have to say I’m a little bit disappointed he wasn’t here when I woke up, but I understand he has a lot to keep up with.  “So, how do you feel about your first shift?”       She asks as she looks at me, leaning at the door with her arms crossed as I brush my teeth. All I can do is look at her as I finish brushing my teeth. Once I’m finished, I spit out the toothpaste and rinse my mouth and look at her again as I wipe my mouth.  “Honestly, I’m overwhelmed, and I don't know? Something else that I can’t quite explain. I almost feel depressed? Does that make sense?” “Absolutely! That's actually pretty normal. That feeling will last a few days, and then you’ll be right as rain!” “Why is that?” “Well, during your shift, your body gets flooded with feel-good endorphins, so when you go back to normal, you’ll feel super down and depressed until your body normalizes again. But no worries, after a few more shifts, your body will be used to it, and it won’t affect you any more! And you have us to help you through the emotional downer!”  “Oh great. Something else to look forward to.” I say as I roll my eyes. **Rogue**      When we arrived back at the packhouse, I immediately went looking for Alpha Lex. As soon as I approached him, I bowed my head. We are never to have direct eye contact with him, so I made sure to lower my eyes as I walked into the room. “Alpha, my King. I have important news to bring you.” “What is it, rogue?” “While we were hunting, we approached a field, but while we couldn't see anything out there, we could sense the wolves that were out there. We were able to pinpoint where they were through smells and sounds, but my King, one of these wolves, was different. Even though we couldn't see it, we could feel the strength and power flowing off of them! I have never felt anything coming from another wolf before. The wolf was so strong that they threw my strongest warrior across the field so forcibly that it broke every bone in his body and snapped the base of the tree.”      The Alpha King sat for a moment as if he was deep in thought. He got up and walked over to the window and stared out. After a moment, he turned back around and looked at me with a malicious smile that sent chills up and down my spine.  “I have an assignment for you, rogue.” “Yes, my King. Anything.” I say as I bow my head. “I want you to go to the Opal Moon pack and ask for them to take you in. I want you to spy on them and get as close to the Alpha as you can. I want you to report back to me whatever you see and hear. Do you understand?” “Yes, your Majesty. But how will I get them to accept me into their pack?”  “That will be the fun part…  for me!”
