Chapter 7

2164 Words
Evan POV      It’s been a week since I’ve heard from Alpha Noah about Jacob, but so far, Jacob hasn’t done anything that would warrant suspicion against him. On top of worrying about if Jacob is who he says he is, we have other issues that have become a top priority.  “Alpha, we have word that there have been human killings by rogues about 45 miles North. It’s bringing unwanted attention from human investigators close to our territory!” “How many people have been killed?” Alpha Eli asks concerned. “Last week, two men were killed viciously. A couple of days later a family who was in a park camping were mauled to death including a 10-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. The attack was so violent that authorities couldn’t recognize the victims and used their identification cards and dental work to confirm who they were. Not only are the human authorities working on the case, but it’s been all over the news, and people are calling for a witch hunt to find the animals responsible for this. None of us will be safe in our wolf forms!”       Eli gets up from his desk and walks over the window that overlooks the training ground. He just stands there and doesn’t say anything for a few minutes. The next thing I know, Seth comes walking in. As Seth takes a seat, Alpha Eli turns around and looks at the both of us.  “Seth, Evan, I want you both to work with the human authorities that are working on the human deaths. I want you to provide any assistance that they may need.” “But Alpha, we’ve never cooperated with humans like that before. Why would we start now?” Seth questions. “Because… this is an attack from our kind that has hit too close to home. The closer we work with them, the better. We can keep them from getting too close to us and find out who the culprit is before they do and take care of the problem ourselves.” “Understood, Alpha,” Seth says. I can’t help but sigh. “We haven’t dealt with the Jacob matter yet either.” “Have one of your men keep tabs on him for now. We’ll have to deal with him another time. For now, this takes precedence. We can’t have humans snooping around our territory.”  “Yes, Alpha.” We say in unison.      We both get up to leave and head out to where the human authorities are working on these deaths.  **Jacob**      I haven’t been able to sneak out to meet with Lex since the last time I met with him with an update and rumor has it that humans have been getting mauled to death by a large animal. I have a feeling that it’s Lex. He has a tendency to become even more murderous when he’s angry and frustrated and me not being able to escape to update him is only going to make him worse. If I don’t get him an update soon, things are only going to get worse. He’s become obsessed with this Christa chick, and he will stop at nothing until he has her. I need to figure out a way to get a message to him without having to leave the territory. As I sit near the packhouse to think how I might be able to achieve this, I see Rebecca walk out of the packhouse, and I have an idea! I get up and catch up with her. “Hey, Rebecca right? I don’t suppose you remember me do you?” She glances at me but doesn’t stop walking.  “Yeah, you’re the dude from the party that asks too many questions.” I chuckle. This chick has a smart mouth.  “Yeah, that’s me, names, Jacob.”  “I remember.” She says as she continues walking. “What do you want?” She asks. “How do you know I want anything?” “Because why else would you be talking to me and following me like a lost puppy?” “Touché,” I say, chuckling, and she finally stops. “So… what is it you want from me?” “I was wondering how one would manage to get a message to someone else through magic?” “Why would you need magic? Just use a damn cellphone like a normal person!” “Well, see, that's the problem. This person is paranoid and lives off the grid. They also live too far for me to visit, so there aren’t a lot of options for me to contact them!” “And why should I help you?” She asks, with both hands on her hips. “Please, I wouldn't be asking if I didn't need your help. But I'm worried about my friend, and I would appreciate any help I can get!” I say as I look her in the eyes. She pauses for a moment and finally nods her head. “Okay, I’ll help you.” “Thank you! What do you need me to do?” “Do you have something that belongs to the person you're trying to get into contact with?” “Uh… I… I… Oh, wait!” I dig around in my pockets, hoping that it's still there, “ah, yes, I do!” I sigh in relief that I forgot to give Lex his pen back. Ironically, the one thing I have of his is a pen that I need in order to send him a message. “Okay, that’ll work. Now, you need to write the note on a piece of paper and fold it in a small square. Once you're finished, I will help you send it off. Meet me where we first met in the garden in 15 minutes.” “Thank you. I will see you in a bit.” I quickly hurry back to the house I’m staying at and write Lex a message.    -Lex,     All is going well here and as planned. I can't get      away from the territory without raising suspicion. I’m      getting closer to finding where they are keeping her     hidden. I found out his father has been put away in      the dungeons and I have come up with a plan. I’ll      notify you once I can put my plan into action.      Once the note is written, I do as Rebecca had told me to do and fold the message in a small square. I quickly rush over to the park where Rebecca is waiting for me.  “Okay, now what?”  “Now, you give me the message.” She says as she holds out her hand. I hesitate to give her the private message that could have me found out. Then she rolls her eyes and clicks her tongue.  “I’m not going to read it if that's what you're worried about!” She says, annoyed.  I hand her my note and the pen that belongs to Lex. She begins chanting with her eyes closed. As soon as she opens her eyes, the note all of a sudden bursts into flames and disappears into a cloud of ashes, and she hands me back the pen.  “That’s it?” “That’s it!” She confirms as she swipes the ashes from her hand.  Well, that was anticlimactic. I thought there would be more to it than that? Oh, well, as long as he got the message. After Rebecca and I went our separate ways, I began my next plan of attack! **Lex**      For the last week, my mind has been racing about what could have happened with Jacob. I really don't want to send another spy in there, but if I don't hear from him soon, I will have no choice but to send a replacement. Shortly after considering what I would do if I didn't hear from Jacob, a piece of paper appeared on my desk. Cautiously I walked over towards it and picked it up off the desk. Confused, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to open it. After reading the first sentence, I realized it was Jacob. That bastard figured out how to get a message to me! It intrigued me greatly to find out that Eli had put his own father in the dungeons. I wonder what Jacob has planned? Either way, I felt relieved hearing from Jacob and knowing that he is doing what needs to be done on the inside.       Soon, I’ll be able to get back my Christa. Until then, I keep growing more and more powerful with each kill I make! After killing those humans for fun, I have found that even though they are considered weak compared to us, I have gotten stronger when I kill them! Pretty soon, I will be the most powerful being on earth, and everyone will bow down to me, and I’ll need a powerful Queen at my side to rule the world with me! **Christa**      It's been busy nonstop lately, and I feel myself getting more and more exhausted. I’ve been doing nothing but practicing my magic and grasping my powers, which I can control fully now. I’ve hardly gotten to see Eli ever since those killings on the humans and being worried about what Lex is up to; it's a lot for any one person to handle.     I’ve been having more and more disturbing dreams. Ever since that first one with Lex killing Eli, I had shrugged it off because, after that, I hadn’t had any more dreams, but these are getting more intense to the point they seem real. I awake with cold sweats and panting heavily, and afterward, I cannot fall back to sleep. I get out of bed and drag myself to the bathroom mirror to get a good look at myself. I can’t help but groan at the dark bags under my eyes. I need to get out of the building and get some fresh air! I miss feeling the sun on my skin!  “Yes, that sounds amazing! I need to stretch my paws!” Amya cuts into my thoughts, “we also need to practice fighting in our wolf form. You have your power in control now, but we are nowhere near ready for any hand-in-hand combat! We need to train!”  “I agree, but it's impossible to convince Eli to let us go outside to practice,” I tell Amya. “Well, who said he has to know?”  “What are you saying, Amya?”  “I’m saying we sneak out of here unnoticed, and we go to that field we first shifted at.” “Are you crazy? Do you want to get us killed? “What? No one would know we’re there. We can use our power now, and we won't have to be gone for long!” “That’s what we thought the last time, and look at what happened then!” “This time will be different! We’ll be fine. We both need this, and no one will let us go out there even if we ask someone to come with us. No one will agree to it!” She argues. I guess she is right. No one in their right mind would let me leave, even if it were with someone trustworthy; Eli would never allow it, especially now with humans investigating dangerous wolves in our area, making right now even more difficult to be going out and practicing. Listening to my thoughts, Amya responds. “I know it's not the best time with humans searching for murderous wolves, but do have an idea to keep us protected and unseen from humans!” “What idea would that be?” “We could use a glamour spell. It wouldn’t hide us from other wolves, but it would hide us from the human eye in both human and wolf form!” “Really? Can we pull that off?” “Of course, I wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't think we could do so!” Amya says. “What about going unseen from the house? If Eli catches us, he might just kill us himself!”  “Don’t worry, just leave it to me! I’ve got it all under control!”  “Yeah, right. Famous last words!”
