Little Rogue

I didn’t sleep, even after Kade left, his scent clung to the room, thick and inescapable. I paced around the room as I tested the limits of my confinement, the bedroom was spacious but held no obvious escape routes, no open windows, no weak spots in the heavy wooden door. Realizing that, it dawned on me that I was trapped, my body ached, but I pushed past the discomfort as I had survived worse and for sure, I would find a way out of here. Not long, the door swung open before I could form a plan, Damon, Kade’s Beta, stepped inside, arms crossed over his chest. His dark blonde hair was slightly tousled, and his sharp hazel eyes assessed me with amusement and caution. “You look like you’re planning something,” he said but I didn’t answer. He smirked. “Kade told me to bring you food.” He set a tray down on a small table near the fireplace. “Figured you might be stubborn about it, though.” I eyed the tray warily. It smelled good, and at the same time, my stomach twisted with hunger, but I didn’t move. Damon sighed. “You think we poisoned it?” “I don’t trust alphas or their packs,” I said flatly. He gave a low whistle. “You must’ve had a hell of a life, little rogue.” I tensed at the nickname. “Don’t call me that.” “Noted.” He stepped back, watching me with open curiosity. “You know, I’ve never seen Kade like this, he’s usually cold, and controlled. But with you? He’s on edge. It’s interesting.” I scowled. “I don’t care what he’s like.” Damon chuckled. “You say that now.” I ignored him, forcing myself to take a slow breath as I couldn’t afford distractions, right now, my only goal was to escape. “Where is he?” I asked. Damon arched a brow. “Why?” I narrowed my eyes. “So I can avoid him.” His smirk returned to his lips. “Good luck with that.” Just as he said that, a deep, commanding voice cut through the room before I could respond. “She won’t be avoiding me.” I turned sharply, my pulse kicking up, and found Kade standing at the doorway, arms crossed, his presence filling the room like a thunderstorm rolling in. He was dressed in dark jeans and a fitted black shirt, his silver eyes locked onto me with that same unreadable intensity. My skin burned under his gaze, but I lifted my chin. “Come to remind me I’m a prisoner?” His lips curved slightly. “You’re not a prisoner, Raine.” I scoffed. “Oh? Then I can leave?” I asked but no reply, just silence. I let out a humorless laugh. “Thought so.” Kade stepped forward, his gaze flickering over me like he was searching for something. “You’re my mate, that means something in this pack.” I crossed my arms. “Not to me.” Something dark stirred in his eyes, Damon saw the tension brewing and cleared his throat. “Well, this seems like a great time for me to leave.” He shot Kade with a knowing smirk before slipping out the door, leaving us alone. The room felt smaller without him. Kade watched me in silence, his expression unreadable. Then, to my shock, he walked to the table, picked up the tray, and carried it toward me. “Eat.” I stiffened. “I don’t take orders from alphas.” His jaw ticked like he was trying hard to control himself from acting. “Fine, a request, then.” I hesitated, hunger gnawing at my intestines, on the contrary, he hadn’t forced me to eat or tried to assert his dominance. He just, waited and I hated him for that. Finally, I sat on the edge of the bed and grabbed a piece of bread, meanwhile, I half-expected him to gloat, but he didn’t. He just stood there, watching me like I was a puzzle he couldn’t quite figure out. After a long moment, he spoke. “Who are you running from, Raine?” The bread turned to ash in my mouth while I kept my face blank. “I’m not running.” His eyes darkened. “Lying to me is a mistake.” I forced a smirk. “Then it’s a good thing I’m full of them.” Kade exhaled slowly like he was trying to hold onto his patience. “You can fight me all you want, but you’re staying here.” He finally said. I leaned forward, my voice a whisper of boldness. “We’ll see about that.” For a second, I swore I saw something flicker behind his eyes, something almost like amusement, and just as quickly as it appeared, it was gone. “Rest,” he ordered. “You’ll need it.” He uttered. On the other hand, I hated how my body reacted to his voice, and how some part of me felt safe, for the first time in years, I wasn’t alone. I waited until the house fell silent and the fire had burned low, casting flickering shadows against the walls. The heavy wooden door remained shut, but I wasn’t stupid enough to think I wasn’t being watched. Kade didn’t trust me, and he had every reason not to, which meant I had to be fast. I moved carefully, testing the soreness in my legs, my body still ached from the days of running, but adrenaline dulled the worst of it. The tray of food sat on the bedside table, ‘If Kade thought a warm meal would tame me, he was dead wrong.’ ‘I don’t belong here and I don’t belong anywhere.’ I uttered internally, and took a slow breath and crept toward the window. It was sealed, but the hinges looked old, worn down by time. ‘Weak spots.’ I said and suddenly and at the same time, a loud knock shattered the silence. I froze as that was pretty unexpected, in a split second, the door slammed open. I barely had time to react before a blur of movement launched at me. I twisted at the last second, narrowly avoiding a set of claws aimed at my throat. I hit the ground hard, the impact rattling my bones as snarls filled the air as I scrambled up just as Ivy lunged again, her eyes blazing with fury. “You don’t belong here, rogue.” Her voice dripped with venom, her claws still extended. “Kade should’ve left you to rot.” I exhaled sharply, my pulse spiking looking at Ivy with cold pity as I had seen this look before, it was jealousy. Meanwhile, Ivy was tall and lean, her dark hair pulled into a tight braid. She was beautiful in a cold way, but right now, her face was twisted with rage. I wiped the blood from my lip where her claws had grazed me. “If you’re trying to scare me, you’ll have to try harder.” Her snarl deepened. “You think you’re special because of some mate bond? You’re nothing.” I smirked. “Tell that to your Alpha.”
