Chapter One
Kira's Point of View I gathered the wildflowers in my arms, their delicate petals brushing against my skin as I moved through the forest. The sun was beginning its descent, casting a warm glow over the landscape, signaling that it was time to return to the village. Today was supposed to be a momentous day. The Alpha’s Throne Ceremony, a grand event that had been delayed several times, was finally happening. The master priest had chosen today, under the pink moon, which was said to bring fortune and strength to our pack. I couldn’t help but smile as I walked towards the village. Everywhere I looked, pack members were busy decorating the area for the celebration. The air buzzed with excitement, and I could feel it deep in my bones. Tonight was the night my mate would claim his rightful place as Alpha, and with that, he would finally announce me as his chosen partner. It had been two long years since we discovered we were fated mates, but we kept it a secret, waiting for this very day. Jade, my mate, and the soon-to-be Alpha, wanted to surprise everyone. The thought of finally being able to stand by his side openly filled me with joy, even though I had to endure keeping it hidden for so long. As I made my way through the village, I heard laughter and turned to see a group of girls gathered on the steps of the communal hall. Among them was Tina, a she-wolf known for her sharp tongue and penchant for mocking me. “Kira! You’ve been picking those flowers again, haven’t you?” Tina called out, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Another girl chimed in, “She thinks the young Alpha will notice her if she brings him pretty flowers.” Tina smirked, “As if. The young Alpha isn’t impressed by things like that. You’d need a lot more than flowers to catch his attention.” Their laughter echoed around me, but I didn’t let it bother me. They had always taunted me, knowing I hadn’t shifted yet, something that set me apart and made me an easy target. But tonight, everything would change. I was about to respond, but before I could, Ben, the young beta of the pack, appeared beside me. His presence silenced the girls instantly. “Enough,” he said sternly, his gaze hardening as he looked at them. “Go and finish your preparations.” The girls hurried away, and Ben turned to me with a concerned look. “Are you okay?” I forced a smile. “I’m fine, Ben. It’s nothing new.” He frowned. “You shouldn’t let them treat you like that. You could have told the Alpha or Jade, and they would have put a stop to it.” “I know,” I replied softly. “But after tonight, it won’t matter. Jade will announce our bond, and then no one will dare treat me like this.” Ben’s expression softened. He knew the truth, that Jade and I were mates, which was why he always looked out for me. “I hope so,” he said quietly. I nodded, then glanced down at the flowers in my hands. “I should go. I still need to finish preparing these for tonight.” Ben smiled faintly. “You picked those from the valley again, didn’t you?” “Yes,” I replied, my heart warming at the thought. “They’re Jade’s favorite.” He nodded. “I’ll see you tonight then.” As Ben walked away, I hurried to the gathering hall, where the final preparations were being made. My excitement bubbled over as I thought about the ceremony and what it meant for Jade and me. Finally, after two years of secrecy, we could openly be together. But as I moved through the hall, something strange caught my attention. A muffled sound, almost like a moan, came from one of the side rooms. I hesitated, my curiosity piqued. I knew I shouldn’t investigate, but something pulled me toward the door. As I neared the slightly ajar door, the sounds grew louder and unmistakable. My heart pounded as I pushed the door open just a c***k, enough to see inside. The scene before me made my blood run cold. Jade, my mate, was entangled with another woman, their bodies moving together in a way that left no room for doubt. And that woman... was Reese, my half-sister. My world tilted on its axis as I stumbled backward, the flowers falling from my hands. Jade’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in shock when he saw me. “Kira...” he started, quickly pulling away and wrapping a towel around his waist. “Why, Jade?” I managed to choke out, my voice trembling with disbelief and hurt. Reese, still in the bed, pulled a sheet up to cover herself, her face flushed. “Kira, this isn’t what it looks like,” she stammered. I shook my head, unable to process what I was seeing. “How could you do this to me?” I asked, my voice breaking. Just then, the door behind me opened wider, and I turned to see Alpha Deven, Jade’s father, standing there with a look of shock. “What’s going on here?” he demanded. Jade stepped forward, his expression composed as if he hadn’t just been caught in the act. “Father, please, let me explain.” Alpha Deven’s eyes narrowed. “Explain what? That you’ve betrayed your mate?” Jade glanced at me, then back at his father. “It’s not like that. Kira, I’m sorry you had to see this, but... Reese and I... we love each other.” His words hit me like a physical blow. Love? How could he claim to love her when we were bound by the sacred mate bond? “Kira, please understand,” Jade continued, his voice calm. “You are my mate, yes, but I have responsibilities as Alpha. I need a Luna who can stand beside me, and...” “And what?” I interrupted, my voice rising in anger. “You think I’m not good enough because I haven’t shifted yet?” Jade looked pained. “It’s not about that. You’re my mate, Kira, and I care about you. But I need someone strong, someone who can lead with me. Reese can do that.” My heart shattered at his words. He didn’t deny our bond, but he was willing to cast me aside for someone he deemed more suitable. My sister. “Kira, please don’t take this the wrong way,” Reese pleaded, stepping closer. “We never meant to hurt you, but... we can’t help how we feel.” I stared at her in disbelief. “You’re my sister. How could you do this?” Reese’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry, Kira. But Jade and I... we’re in love. And tonight, he’s going to announce it to the pack.” The room spun around me as I struggled to breathe. They were going to announce it tonight? The same night Jade was supposed to declare me as his mate? Alpha Deven stepped forward, his face grim. “Jade, you’re the future Alpha. You can’t forsake your mate for another woman, even if that woman is her sister. The bond is sacred.” Jade’s expression hardened. “I know, Father. But I can’t ignore my heart. Kira will always be my mate, but Reese... Reese is the one I want to share my life with.” The pain in my chest became unbearable. They were discussing my fate as if I wasn’t even there. My own family, and the man I loved, all betraying me in the most heart-wrenching way. I looked at Jade, the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with. “You knew I was adopted, didn’t you?” Jade’s eyes widened slightly but didn’t deny it. “Kira, that doesn’t change anything. You’re still my mate.” I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “No, it changes everything. You don’t love me. You just want to use me to fulfill the bond.” “Kira,” my mother’s voice broke in, trying to soothe me. “We’re all family here. Please, be understanding. This doesn’t mean Jade will neglect you. He can take care of both you and Reese.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My mother, the one who was supposed to protect me, was asking me to accept this betrayal. “I refuse,” I said, my voice growing stronger. “I refuse to be treated like this. If you can’t love me, Jade, then I won’t be your mate.” The room fell silent as everyone stared at me in shock. “What are you saying, Kira?” Jade asked, his calm facade cracking. “I’m saying that I reject you, Jade,” I replied, my voice unwavering. “I reject you as my mate, and I reject the life you’ve planned for me.” I turned and fled the room, ignoring the calls of my name. My heart ached, but I knew I couldn’t stay. I couldn’t live a life where I was only a shadow, where my mate didn’t truly love me. As I ran, I didn’t look back. I needed to escape, to find a place where I could heal and start anew. Somewhere far away from the pain and betrayal that had shattered my world.
