THE MORNING AFTER
The classroom was already half full when I got there. Mara was sitting in our usual spot near the window. She waved me over and I dropped into the seat next to her. My body was still tired from the party but it was a good tired, the kind that came from actually having fun instead of running on stress and fear.
"You look happy," Mara said. "Did you sleep well?"
"Better than I have in weeks," I said.
Kael walked in a few minutes later with Liam right behind him. They were arguing about something. Liam was gesturing wildly and Kael was shaking his head like whatever Liam was saying was ridiculous.
"I am telling you," Liam was saying as they walked past us, "if you do not ask her out officially, I will do it for you."
