Butterflies on the Boardwalk.
Sabrina POV:
A piece of bubblegum stuck to the pavement. It bubbled and popped in the heat of the summer sun. The seagulls circled around the trash cans that were overflowing.
There was no good shade available anywhere. People were everywhere, all types of music slipped into your ears. Rock, pop, rap, hip-hop, reggae, and country could all be heard. My two sisters, my cousin, my mom and I were just arriving here for the summer. We were taking a walk along the boardwalk. My mom had gotten a great paid internship. It was in the marketing department for a major company that had a corporate office here. She is hoping it turns permanent, she starts tomorrow. Even though half of the year this place is a calm town. (During fall, and winter). The picture of a perfect place to retire. The rest of the year it was nonstop party central. (During the spring and summer)
Young adults from high school and college alike would choose to spend their spring and summer breaks here.
Mom was trying to make our visit here permanent for two reasons. First, this job had excellent benefits and pay. Being a single mom that is what she really needed to take care of three daughters. Secondly, her parents, our grandparents lived here. Free daycare for mom, even though I didn’t need a babysitter. I turned eighteen almost two months ago. I was considering taking a year off before I started college.
I would have watched my younger sisters who were twelve (Casey) and eight (Kimmy).
I needed to start a job as well though. That was part of the reason I was gonna take a year off.
My mother didn’t have money for college for me.
The past couple of years have been tough.
I had to work a full time job in high school to help with the bills.
My father had created a lot of debt at the expense of my mothers credit.
He had gotten addicted to pain medication he was prescribed from a work accident.
It was so bad he had been terminated from work.
Without telling my mother, he wiped out my sisters and my savings accounts.
He used it to cover the bills for a few months and to feed his addiction.
My mother didn’t notice for a while, that is until she received a letter, saying our mortgage was behind.
My mother paid for a few rounds of rehab for my father.
It was an alternative to a divorce. Which he begged her not to do.
My father showed his appreciation by getting clean; then running off with a doctor from one of his rehab facilities.
We haven’t seen or heard from him since.
That was a little over two years ago.
My grandparents were thrilled to be able to spend time with their grandchildren. They offered to babysit my sisters every day for free.
They understood what we had been through and wanted to help anyway they could.
We were going to be living with them for the summer.
My cousin, Tessa (she is seventeen) included.
She was fresh out of juvenile detention.
She had been caught inside a mall trying to steal a necklace.
Her parents had basically disowned her for it.
I kind of felt bad for her, we were close when we were little.
She was a sweet girl, but was led astray by her bad choice of boyfriends.
“Sabrina look over there!” Kimmy squealed out in delight.
I looked over to see a table set up with a couple of face painters. A sign was taped to the front of the table, it read:
[Face Painting $3/ per design]
“I want my face painted! I want a butterfly! No a pony! No a kitty!” Kimmy said, trying to pull me towards the table.
Kimmy had appointed me her honorary favorite sister. I wasn’t sure why she chose me to be her favorite sister but she did. Everywhere I went Kimmy went. Anything I did she tried to do as well. It was very annoying yet cute at the same time.
“Alright you, we can get matching designs.”
Kimmy and I ended up getting matching full face butterflies.
The butterflies were a beautiful sky blue.
The painter had mixed in some glitter.
It looked so good, I wasn’t sure I would ever want to wash it off. I tipped the painters an extra dollar each and we went on our way. We spent the rest of the day getting compliments on our face painting.
We were heading back to my grandparents house when I saw a help wanted sign. It was an Italian pizzeria and it was actually upbeat.
It was decorated nicely.
It had black tile floors.
White subway tile walls, and nice rustic benches. A big brick oven could be seen in the kitchen through a window that was behind the counter.
I walked up to a girl at the counter. When she saw me she greeted me and asked how she could help me.
“Is the hiring manager here? I would like to speak to them about a job.”
“Larry!” She yelled back towards the kitchen.
A short, chubby man that looked like Danny Devito came out.
“What, what?”
“This girl is here to see you for a job. Also I’m taking my break in fifteen minutes.” She said with a grin.
“Fine, fine!” Larry said before turning to me.
“Did you put an application in?”
I shook my head no.
“Well here is an application. I’ll interview you now. You can fill it out after. Then give it to Janice here.
The girl behind the counter waved.
“Hi, I’m Janice.”
“ I thought you might be her.” I said with a laugh.
“ Give me a minute. I have to grab my glasses, pen, and notebook.” Larry said heading to the back. I walked over to a table and sat down.
Janice had given me a pen and my application. I started to fill it out.
This would be quick.
I jotted down my grandparents address. I only had one other job before this. I worked at a burger restaurant as a cashier before.
I managed to finish the application before Mr. Larry sat back down.
I hope this interview goes well.
