The dark blue pool rippled, and suddenly, Jason dived into it. His arms parting the water as he moved. The pool was a large one, but Jason managed to be able to swim to and fro it four times, but after the fourth, he stopped. He wiped his face with his hand while breathing heavily, part of his body still submerged in the water. He remembered the midday gossip, and he shut his eyes and shook his head, like it would do away with the thought of it. Regardless, they stayed, he couldn’t help it. These kinds of gossip spread quickly, and it could harm his reputation and engagement to Diane, which was obviously bad for business.
“Ohhh that sly fox, she thinks she can just spill and get away with it? I’ll make her pay for this” he swore beneath his breath and immediately, he dived back into the water.
It was morning already, but Emily hadn’t gotten out of bed yet. She still slept gracefully when all of a sudden, she felt a gentle tap on her shoulder. She tried to ignore it, not wanting to wake up from the blissful sleep she was having. But the gentle tap was still persistent, and this chased whatever sleep that was left away. Emily finally turned, stretching and yawning, before finally taking a peek from her still semi shut eyes. She saw a slim figure standing in front of her, holding something in it’s hand. Emily immediately sat up, rubbing her eyes with her palms before fully opening them this time. She could now see who it was, it was her aunt and in her hands was a tray of noodles and scrambled eggs. Emily’s eyes instantly lit up as she properly adjusted herself on the bed. Emily’s aunt placed the tray on her laps, watching Emily look into the plate, with a smile on her face.
“My favorite, thanks aunt” Emily remarked, smiling at her.
“You’re welcome darling. Eat up, we got errands to run today” Emily’s aunt remarked as she walked out of the room. Emily let out a half hearted smile, and continued to have her breakfast.
The morning was quite a busy one for Emily. After her breakfast, she helped her aunt make deliveries, before helping her arrange the small convenience store. For the first time in days, she felt relaxed and at peace. It was already 9pm, and the store was up for closing. Emily was dozing on her desk when her aunt walked in from the restroom. She saw her niece dozing, and smiled to herself before walking up to Emily and waking her up. Emily immediately sat up, trying to wipe the sleep from her face and act agile.
“Hey relax dear, you don’t need to be all jumpy” Emily’s aunt remarked as she giggled. Emily let out a tired smile and wiped her face again.
“I didn’t even know when I dozed off, must have been super exhausted” Emily remarked, and two women giggled, before Emily’s cleared her throat.
“Emily, I have something for you” she said softly. Emily nodded slightly, her eyes betraying her curiosity. Her aunt pulled out a tiny box she had hidden behind her when she walked in. Emily still looked on, confused at what her aunt was doing. Her aunt noticed this but still let out a warm smile.
“Emily, this tiny box is filled with my savings. I know you always wanted to become a fashion designer. So all the money in this box, I want you to have it, go and learn to become a fashion designer” Emily’s aunt announced. Emily’s eyes grew wide, surprise filled every corner of her face, with her lips wide apart and trembling.
“Aunty” she managed to whisper. Her aunt smiled sweetly again and took Emily’s had in her’s .
“Baby girl, you deserve to pursue your dreams and find your feet. I promised to make that happen, this is just a step towards it” Emily’s aunt said. Immediately, Emily embraced her aunt, years falling from her eyes as she squeezed her aunt softly.
“Thank you aunty, you have no idea how thankful I am right now” Emily muttered. Her aunt smiled and began to stroke her niece’s back gently.
“It’s alright my dear, just do well. That is the only way you would ever thank me my dear” she remarked. Emily quickly withdrew from her aunt’s embrace, a bright smile plastered on her face amidst her teary eyes.
“I promise aunty, I promise to do very. Thank you for believing in me, I won’t let you down!” Emily responded, her voice echoing in excitement. Her aunt let out a smile again, contentment evident in her expression.
“Alright my dear, I think it’s time to close for the day” Emily’s aunty remarked. Emily nodded cheerfully and in about two minutes, the two women were preparing themselves to leave the store.
They had both gotten to the apartment complex, and slowly began to make their walk up the stairs when suddenly, Emily stopped. Her aunt turned back, giving her a confused look.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“I forgot to get some painkillers, I really need them tonight” Emily answered. Her aunt paused for a bit before looking at her again.
“Yeah, you should get that. I’m out of some myself” she responded. The two women chuckled before Emily walked a little closer and handed her the apartment keys.
“I won’t be long aunty, I’ll join you before you know it” Emily remarked, to work her aunt responded with a nod. Emily quickly walked down a few steps and crossed the partially quiet street. Her aunt turned and watched her run off, a soft smile spread on her face.
"Be happy Emily, that's one step forward" she muttered.
