Emily quickly climbed the stairs, her bag hanging on her shoulders and a plastic bag on her left hand. She hurried up the stairs and finally got to the apartment. But just as she was about to knock on the door, she heard a loud crashing sound. The sound accompanied with a piercing cry, which made her blood freeze. She knew it was her aunt, the voice was undeniable. Just as she wanted to bang on the door, she heard another voice.
“Tell me where that good for nothing lowlife is, tell me where Emily is!” The person screamed. Emily gasped, immediately recognizing the slow paced but piercing voice.
“Jason” she muttered to herself.
“My niece is not a lowlife you scum. And as you can see, she isn’t here” Emily’s aunt answered. Her voice sounding firm, but her breathing was labored. At this point, Emily couldn’t stand by anymore. She immediately banged on there door viciously, screaming as she did so.
“Leave my aunt alone you filthy son of a b***h!” She yelled.
“Emily run! Save yourself! He’ll kill you!” her aunt yelled. But Emily was not ready to back down. In just a few seconds, the door flung open, with Jason glaring at Emily from the door. Without warning, he dragged Emily by her hair, trying to pull her into the house.
“You went to blab about it, didn’t you sicko?!” he yelled. Emily squirmed in pain, trying to get her balance.
“I didn’t breath a word to anyone, I swear!” Emily answered as she tried to get her hair off Jason’s strong grip.
“Liar. Anyways tonight I’ll put and end to this menace” Jason resolved, still pulling Emily by her hair. Just as Emily was about to be pulled into the house, Emily’s aunt managed to pull herself up and charged towards Jason. She instantly dug her teeth into his skin just by his side. Jason screamed, instantly letting go of Emily’s hair, and Emily instantly fell to the ground. It seemed someone from inside grabbed Emily’s aunt immediately after the act, as Emily could see a silhouette figure of a man grabbing her aunt and immediately striking her on the top of her head. Before Jason could grab onto Emily again, Emily stood up and took to her heels. She didn’t care about anything, she just ran and kept doing so for about five minutes. Suddenly, she began to hear sirens approaching, she figured out it was the police, and just decided to crumble on the tarred road. About two of the vehicles passed, but one stopped, with some officers rushing out from the car. They saw the distraught lady on the ground and immediately rushed to her.
“Hey dear, keep calm we’re here to help” one of the officers managed to say. Emily just knelt there shaking and crying.
Emily was carried into the station’s questioning room. A coffee in her hand and her bag still slung around her right shoulder. About five minutes later, an officer walked in, shutting the door behind him. He sat on a metal-like seat, a small metal-like table was separating Emily and the detective. Emily didn’t raise her head when he entered, her eyes were laser focused on the small cup of coffee in her hand. The detective let out a deep sigh before spoke, somehow getting Emily’s attention.
“Detective Bruce” he said, stretching out his arm for a handshake. “You are?”
“Emily, Emily Ross” Emily managed to respond, but ignored the handshake. With enthusiasm in her eyes, she looked at the detective.
“My aunty, is she okay?” Emily asked the detective.
“Miss Emily, she didn’t make it, I’m sorry” the detective announced. Emily immediately began to fidget, not knowing what to do or how to respond. Her aunt’s final moments continued to play in Emily’s head like a record.
“Miss Emily, are you with me?” the detective asked, snapping his fingers in front of Emily’s face.
“Yes, yes I am” Emily responded, her attention brought back to the current situation.
“So Miss Emily tell me, how did it happen?” the detective asked.
“They were two, but I only know one of the attackers” Emily said, the tone of her voice as hush as ever.
“And who’s that?” the detective asked.
“Jason, Jason Regan” Emily managed to mutter. The detective paused, giving Emily a long stare.
“Are you sure of what you are saying Miss? Cos an accusation like this isn’t one to be taken lightly” the detective asked. Emily’s pleading eyes changed to an angry one, one filled with grief and anger.
“It is Mr. Jason Regan. I saw him with my own two eyes” Emily maintained. The detective let out a sigh, before taking out a notepad from his pocket and scribbling down something on it with the pen he picked from his breast pocket.
“So, did you have any affiliations with this man?” The detective asked.
“Yes, he was my boss’s son” Emily answered, to which the detective wrote down something again.
“Did the two of you engage in any misunderstandings prior till today?” he continued.
“Yes” she answered.
“And that is?”. Immediately the detective got to this question, she paused. She knew things would get worse if she said any other thing concerning her pregnancy for him. After all, it was the very reason he wanted to have her killed.
“He must have thought I spread a rumor about him after my resignation” Emily answered calmly.
“What does the rumor entail?” the detective asked. At this point, Emily had had enough.
“Please this is all I can answer for now” Emily said, sniffing her nose in a bid to control her emotions. The detective looked at her for a minute, and understood she wasn’t willing to say any more things. He let out another sigh again, before finally making a last eye contact with her.
“We’ll let you return home tonight, we’ll continue this by tomorrow morning” he said.
“But I have nowhere else to go. My only home is now a crime scene” Emily muttered.
“It’s fine, I’ll arrange for an empty cell for you tonight. Probably by tomorrow, you can figure yourself out” the detective offered.
“Sure, thanks” Emily said in a hush tone.
