Chapter 8.

1085 Words
Emily sat on the floor in the dimly lit cell, a thick blanket and a pillow on the floor not far from where she’s sitting. She wasn’t allowed any access to her bag which was kept “properly” according to police. The images of what has happened that night actively played in her head. The sight of being pulled by the hair, and the way by which her aunt was struck on the head couldn’t stop appearing. She remembered her poor aunty, her cold body would be in some morgue’s fridge, stiff and abandoned. She was just about to get herself and the piece of her life together, but it seemed to be a distant dream now, all thanks to Jason. Tears began to flow from Emily’s eyes, but no sobbing sound escaped her throat. She slowly but carefully retreated to the makeshift bed on the floor and lay on it, trying to sleep off the terrible dream, but sleep was not forthcoming. She just lay there, staring at the ceiling above her, and tears flowing from her eyes. Morning came, without Emily sleeping a wink. At this point, she was now hearing the hushed tones of some officer’s voices which really didn’t catch her attention at first, but immediately, she began to piece up their conversation and realized who they were talking about. “That lady who slept over last night really revealed something. She blames the CEO of Regan Rander for the murder that took place” an officer said. “Nah, she’s probably delusional, her claims don’t seem to be solid” the other officer chipped in. “But it’s been confirmed she worked there till she submitted her resignation letter about two days ago” the first officer pointed out. There was a little silence for a while before the second officer spoke. “Then, she might be making a little sense here. And if she’s right, there’s a problem” the second officer noted. “Now that’s where this case get weird. It’s gonna be closed soon. There are no evidences collected so far and Mr. Jason seems to have a rock solid alibi” the first officer said. Emily didn’t wait to finish hearing the conversation when she immediately sprang up from her bed and headed over to the cell bar. “Excuse me!” she called out. And in no time, an officer approached her. “I’ve got to leave now, thanks for the night” she said. “Uhmmm, you can’t leave now miss, you’ve got a case” the officer said to her. “Sir, I’m not a suspect yet. I was supposed to go home yesterday, but I was emotionally unstable to do so. So please, if you don’t mind, let me out” she said. Before the officer could say anything else, detective Bruce showed up. He dismissed the officer and immediately opened the cell. “Good morning Miss Ross, hope your night was okay” he asked. “Well, yes. I just need to get out” Emily insisted. “This way then” the detective gestured, leading Emily to a corner in the station and handing her, her handbag. “My dear, I think you should get out of town immediately. This case is getting messed up right now” the detective whispered. “But I’ve got nowhere else to go” Emily muttered, devastation written all over her. “Anywhere but an insane asylum seems good. Leave now or else, you life’s over” the detective said. Emily couldn’t have much time to process everything, but she got the message. She firmly nodded, and took her handbag before heading out of the station immediately. She walked as fast as her legs could carry her, before eventually boarding a taxi. She just sat in it, her thoughts all over the place. She wasn’t sure of where to go to at this point. Her only family was gone, her home was now a crime scene, she didn’t know how she was going to bury her aunt, or how she was going to start her own life. She just stared blankly out the window of the moving vehicle when suddenly, a thought hit her. “Driver, please drop me off at Willy’s street” Emily finally decided. The driver nodded firmly and continued to drive, while Emily continued to stare blankly through the car window. Jason was already dressed, all set to go to work. He was about to enter the backseat of the car when suddenly, his father appeared behind him. This sudden appearance startled him a bit. Mr. Regan wore a black expression. “Jason come with me” Mr. Regan ordered, his voice cold and unfeeling. Jason let out a frustrated sigh. “I’m late already dad, can’t this wait till I’m back?” Jason asked. “Follow me young man! Don’t let me repeat myself” Mr. Regan warned sternly. Jason had no other option than to follow his dad. They both walked for a few minutes till they stopped at the poolside. “Where were you last night Jason?” Mr. Regan asked. “Uhmm, where’s this question coming from?” Jason asked. His father immediately glared at him. “Answer my question young man, where the hell where you yesterday?” Mr. Regan asked, his voice rattling with anger. Jason knew what a wrong answer would attract, and he wasn’t totally willing to risk it. “Uhmm dad, I went out last night with Douglas, we went to have a drink at Delmar” Jason answered firmly. His father gave him a long cold stare before turning his face forward. “Jason Regan, the police came to our house this morning enquiring about a murder. Your mother and your fiancée were traumatized by those allegations. I really believe this is some misunderstanding, but whatever you do, do not mess up your engagement to that sweet girl. I can’t let you ruin this family’s reputation and legacy, I spent thirty years of my life building all of it” Mr. Regan warned sternly, before walking off, leaving his son. Jason clenched both of his fists. It took him about two minutes to get his composure, before he finally reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He then proceeded to dial a number and placed it on his right ear. “Douglas, please come to the office immediately” he said, before he hung up the call.
