Jason matched into the “Regan Rander” building as fast as he could. Everyone was busy in the big building, machine sounds blared uncontrollably while people ran in disorganized patterns, some carrying clothes, while others were just on the sewing machines. Jason didn’t care about the activities going on, he had bigger problems. As he climbed the stairs to his office, one man followed him immediately. When Jason got to the door of his office, he turned and saw this man just standing behind.
“Sir, the meeting…..” the man tried to say before he was cut off by Jason.
“We’ll have to cancel, I called my PA and she must have delivered the message to everyone. The presentation will be done tomorrow okay?” he responded and immediately walked into the office and shut the door behind him. He immediately flung his briefcase on one of the couches in his office, his breath ragged as he stood and stared blankly through the curtains which swayed because of the morning breeze. Just as stood there, he heard a knock on the door, which brought back his attention to his office.
“Come in Douglas” Jason announced and instantly, the door flung open. Jason turned to see who it was, and it was a tall guy with a slim build who walked in. His green eyes complimented his neatly trimmed blonde hair and pine shaped face. He slowly pushed the door with his long fingers and walked into the office with an easy going but bold aura. He stood at the door with his arms crossed above his chest, while still leaning at the door frame.
“Won’t you stop standing there and take a seat?” Jason asked, almost swearing at Douglas. Douglas walked leisurely into the office and leisurely sat on the couch in the middle of the office, while Jason stood beside his large desk, watching Douglas.
“You sent for me Jason. Make it quick, cos I’m also a busy man” Douglas said, as he leisurely picked his fingernails. Jason scoffed and slowly made his way to the middle of the office, seating at the opposite couch.
“Douglas, we’re in trouble” Jason muttered, his voice breaking with every word coming out of his lips. Douglas looked up at him, pausing the picking of his fingernails.
“How?” he simply asked.
“The police came over for questioning late last night. My dad’s been grumpy and nosey about the whole situation” Jason answered. Douglas scoffed and continued picking his fingernails.
“That’s not an issue” he responded. Jason’s face instantly squeezed in displeasure with his friend’s response and attitude.
“What the hell do you mean it’s not an issue? We killed someone last night” Jason asked, his demeanor now restless. His friend at that instant stopped picking his fingernails and put his hand down. He sat upright, now looking at Jason in the eye.
“You killed that woman, I’m only an accomplice. After all, you seem to have forgotten we paid good money to the DPO, so we’re good. The case has been wrapped up nicely and your girl should be on her way to the psych ward if she’s still in the station or better still, accused of the crime. So, chill” Douglas answered, his voice as calm as the summer breeze. Jason’s demeanor finally relaxed, his furrowed brow straightened up, a slight smile spread on his face.
“I forgot all that, didn’t know you helped me handle it” Jason said.
“Well I guess you should try remembering often, you’re too young to be dealing with forgetfulness” Douglas responded and after that, he immediately stood up from the couch and began to head out of the office.
“Let’s grab a drink this weekend” Jason said. Douglas immediately stopped at the door, without turning back. He just gave a peace sign before he pushed the door and immediately headed out. Jason chuckled a bit as he watched his friend leave. Immediately Douglas left, Jason picked his phone and dialed a number. When the call went through, he began to speak.
“The girl I told you about, if she’s out, find her and end her” he instructed over the phone.
Emily got into the store ,locking it behind her, without flipping the sign to “open”. She walked further into the store, memories flooding into her mind as she looked around. The thoughts became so overwhelming, to the extent she just broke down, falling to her knees and crying profusely. She hadn’t been able to grieve properly, she couldn’t just accept the reality of her life then. But this time, it was really clear to her now. She cried at her eyes out, beating her chest as she did so, this went on for about ten minutes, when all of a sudden she stopped. She just stared into the space for a while, not moving or standing from her kneeling position, the only thing was that this time, she began to mutter.
“Aunty Annalise, I would keep living. I’ll become the best designer in the world, I’ll keep this child like you’ve encouraged me to. And when I’m back, I’ll surely give you justice and I would bury you properly” Emily said, her teary voice still sounding crisp, clear and strong. She got up from her kneeling position and immediately headed over to where the register was and began to search it. She found the box, where her aunty had saved some money for her fashion school. She searched the old drawer underneath and found a few dollar notes and a jar of coins. She put all these into her handbag and immediately she was done, she scrambled out of the store and after she had locked it up, she turned and looked at the store one last time, and let out a painful weak smile. She looked forward again and began to walk faster, approaching the road. She immediately stopped a taxi and hopped into it.
“Where would you want to go?” the driver asked.
“The train station” Emily answered.
