Prodigal Son

The door to the Alpha's slammed open, the door hinges shaking as Trey stepped into the room. His boots pounded against the floor underneath his feet, echoing with a fury that showed how angry he was. Alpha Mykel, remained seated behind his large oak desk, watching his son with calm eyes, unmoved by his dramatic entrance. "I need to talk to you." Trey began, his voice still sharp, his body shaking with anger as he spoke. Alpha Mykel folded his arms and pointed to the chair across him. "Sit and then talk. But lower your voice in my presence." Trey ignored his father's offer of taking a sit and rather chose to lean over the desk. "That Lycan King needs to leave. He should not be allowed to stay, or even have the chance to take Jess as his mate.* Mykel sighed, falling back into his chair. "Trey, I don't think you know or understand the implications of what you are saying. King Luca isn't just anyone that you give orders to. He is a ruler, and if this works out, we will have an alliance that is sure to bring numerous benefits to the pack. The bond that he has with Jess is a beautiful gift, not a problem for me." Trey clenched his fists. "A gift? Just a few moments ago, she was my mate!" he slammed his fists on the desk in front of him. "You can't possibly believe this nonsense about a mate bond. It's not a switch that goes on and off. There has to be a mistake somewhere." Alpha Mykel's expression changed. "You rejected her if I remember correctly, Trey." He said with an even tone. "She was you're fated mated, yes, but you made it clear to her and the entire pack that you didn't want to have anything to do with her. Now I ask, why does it bother you that someone else has recognized her worth?" "That's not the case, father." Trey snapped at him, his voice faltering a little bit. "This is about loyalty. She is a part of our pack. And if she goes with him, it will weaken us." Mykel's eyes narrowed in on his son. "Trey, quit lying to yourself. This isn't about loyalty to the pack in any way. It is your pride. You don't just like the fact that she will be treated by another man. You don't like the fact that she has found a way to move on from you." Trey just stood there, with his mouth open but was silent. His father seized this opportunity to continue speaking. "You chose to be flirting around with Scarlet in front of the poor girl that you rejected," Mykel said, his tone sounding steely. "You humiliated her in front of everyone in the pack. Don't come into my office and act like a hero now, Trey. You lost the right to have a day in her life the moment you denied her as your fated mate." Trey's jaw tightened, his anger beginning to bubble beneath the surface. "And what about Scarlet? Are we just going to ignore her like she means nothing to me?" Mykel leaned forward, his eyes searching his son's. "Scarlet is nothing but a distraction to you. A selfish choice that you made because of lust. Jess can be used as a bridge to something greater in partnership with the Lycan Kingdom. We will find a way to treat them with respect while King Luca stays here. She is to be relieved of every chore, and supported in whatever decision she makes at the end. That is my final decision." Trey stared at his father angrily, his fists piercing into his skin. Without any other word, he turned and stormed out of his father's office, slamming the door once again. * * * In the quiet of her tiny room, Jess sat on the edge of her bed, her thoughts still a big mess. Across from her was Lila, her closest friend, who watched with concern. "Jess, talk to me," Lia said gently. "What are you going to do now." Jess just let out a shaky sigh, her hands twisting in her lap nervously. "I don't know, Lila. Everything is just moving so fast. My head keeps telling me to stay, but the feelings of the mate bond that I have with King Luca keep telling me...." "The mate bond is leading you to pick King Luca?" Lila asked, leaning forward to hear better. Jess hesitated for a moment, her voice still barely above a whisper. "Yes. I want to go with him and I can't explain why." Lila's eyes widened. "King Luca?" Jess nodded, her face turning red as she spoke. "He's.. he is so different from Trey and I can't tell if it is because of his age. I can tell that he is kind and strong. He doesn't see me like I am nothing and just wants me the way I am. Do you know that no one has ever made me feel like I mattered this way?" Lila reached out and took Jess's hand into her own. "You deserve all of that, Jess. You deserve a mate that loves and cherishes you. If King Luca is already making you feel that way, the Moon Goddess must have heard your prayers." Jess opened her mouth to speak, but a deep, soothing, and familiar voice cut her off. "So you truly desire to be with me that much?" Both women froze where they sat. Their heads snapped to the door, where King Luca stood, his figure filling the entire doorway. His piercing blue eyes fixed on Jess, making her heart beat faster. "Your Majesty." Jess began to stammer, scrambling to her feet immediately. "How long ha...have you been there?" Luca stepped into the room, his presence taking over the atmosphere. "I didn't mean to eavesdrop on your conversation." He said, his voice finding a way to be smooth and commanding. "But I'm glad that I did." Lila quickly removed herself from the room without being asked, giving her friend an encouraging look before leaving. Jess began to fidget under Luca's gaze, especially now that they were both alone. "So you wish to come with me?" Luca asked, sounding firm yet soft. Jess hesitated, her eyes quickly moving to the floor. "I. I don't know. Maybe? I am just an omega, I can't understand what you see in me." Luca took a step closer to her, the look on his face softening."You're not an omega when you're with me, Jess. You are my mate. I have never seen the mate bond lie." Jess's eyes began to fill with tears. "But Trey rejected me. So how can I be your mate all of a sudden? It doesn't make any sense." Luca reached out, gently taking her into his arms. His touch was the warmest that she had ever been in. "Trey is a child, his rejection is a loss to him. The bond we have is real. I couldn't help but feel it from the moment that I met you. You are mine, and if you give me I chance I will prove it to you." Jess's breath hitched, a mixture of fear and hope building up in her chest. "What if this is a mistake? What if the bond is real?" Luca's eyes softened as she spoke, his thumb taking away the tear from her eye. "Do you feel it,? An unusual pull when we are together? The way your heart begins to race uncontrollably?" She nodded, unable to deny everything he had said. "I do." "Then trust me," Luca said with a simple voice. "Trust me. I know that you're scared, but I promise never to hurt you. You'll be everything to me?" Jess's knees began to give out from under her, her mind spinning completely. "Please... I need some time to think." Luca smiled at her, taking a step backward. "Take all the time that you will need. I am here and I will not leave except you're with me."
