Love & War

The following morning, the dining hall was buzzing with activity as the heads of the pack gathered for a celebratory breakfast. King Luca sat at the head of the table, next to his friend, Alpha Mykel, exuding authority and composure like nothing they had seen before. He scanned the entire room, his eyes finally landing on Scarlet and Trey, who sat next to each other, smiling at one another. When Jess was nowhere to be found, Luca's voice cut through the crowd's conversation. "Where is Jess?" The room fell into silence. Trey bit his lower lip angrily while Scarlet's seductive smile left her face as she exchanged a nervous glance with Trey. "She has never dined with us at this table like the rest of the servants, Luca." Trey's father, Alpha Mykel, explained to his old friend. Luca's gaze sharpened as he got his answer. "Dear friend, during my stay here I would like her to become accustomed to eating with royalty. After all, she is my mate and as such she belongs next to me. Please bring her to me." "Immediately." Trey quickly sprung out of his seat, anger boldly written on his face. "She doesn't belong at this table! Take your…" "Enough!" Alpha Mykel's voice echoed in the hall, silencing his son mid-sentence. "You seem to forget your place now that you are Alpha. You rejected her so you have no claim over her." Trey's face turned red quickly, angry but he could do nothing as his father had now gestured that Jess be brought to the dining hall. Scarlet sat, boiling inside of her chest, her long nails digging into the tablecloth's material while she glared at King Luca. Minutes later, Jess stepped into the hall, her steps visibly hesitant. Her eyes widened as she took in the beauty of the grand hall while her eyes remained fixed on the dignitaries that were present. She had never been in the presence of some many high-profile people in the pack, let alone be the reason they were all staring. "Jess," Luca said, his tone strong but not unkind. "Take a seat." She hesitated, glancing at both Trey and Scarlet, whose expressions moved from hatred to disdain regularly. Gathering enough courage, she moved to the seat beside Luca and lowered herself gently into it. Throughout the meal, Jess could feel the weight of their stares on her, their whispers barely hidden from her eyes. Trey's gaze completely burned into her, a mixture of anger and desperation, while Scarlet's sharp lashes batted while staring at her. As they continued to progress, Scarlet leaned closer to the new alpha of the pack, Trey, her voice sounding low but clear enough for her voice to be heard. "I need us to talk about us. Soon." Trey removed his eyes from Scarlet just to give her a quick nod before returning to Jess. The look on Scarlet's face became dark as she tightened her grip on his arm. By the end of the meal, Jess had never felt so drained. Luca stood, his commanding presence keeping the room quiet and on their toes once again. "Thank you for your hospitality, my dear friend." He started. "I trust that during my stay here, my mate will receive the respect that she deserves." His words entered the air and left no room for argument from anyone, and as he offered his right hand to Jess, she hesitated for a while before finally taking it. Together, they left the hall, leaving the room with tension and hate from folks like Trey and Scarlet who were just irritated by the fact that Trey couldn't help himself but stare at Jess at every chance he got. She knew if she was going to get the position of Luna, she was most likely going to have him get her pregnant so he had no other choice than to marry her like the pack rules state. As King Luca and Jess walked through the corridors, Jess turned to look at him. "You didn't have to do any of that." Luca's expression softened up. "Yes, I did. You deserve to be known for who you truly are, Jess. And I will make sure that while I am here, you are treated like my Queen." Jess's heart ached when she heard those words, her confusion becoming more dire. She had a choice to make, and it needed to be done soon. The dining hall became quiet as everyone slowly exited, leaving Trey alone, his fists heated up with rage. His mind was one hell of a chaotic storm, replaying every moment of Jess being treated like a Queen at King Luca's side. She had looked so different—like she was born for royalty. The entire sight of her smiling at the king had twisted a knot deep inside of him. A mix of anger, regret, and an odd longing for her. These were emotions that he couldn't quite wrap his hands around or suppress either. Scarlet lingered at one corner of the room, her eyes still locked on Trey. She had been watching him while they ate, his gaze completely fixed on Jess, his emotions so visible on his face for anyone who cared to see. Scarlet was observant enough and this sight even made her more furious. Finally, she pushed herself out of the chair and crossed over to the other side of the room. "Trey," she called out gently, her voice trying to be sweet even though it had a certain irritation to it. Trey didn't respond, his jaw was locked tight as he stared continuously at the doorway that Jess had walked out of, holding King Luca's hand. Scarlet stepped in front of him, turning her head to study his face. "You've been moody all morning," she said. "I suppose seeing another man with the girl you rejected must have gotten under your skin, didn't it?" Trey's eyes turned to meet hers, his glare still cold. "Scarlet, what is it you want this time around?" Scarlet's smile faltered before she wrapped both of her arms around her chest and leaned on the dining table. "I need you to stop acting like a fool, Trey. Jess isn't yours anymore. You made sure the entire pack about this when you rejected her." "Don't" Trey warned, his voice feeling all low and dangerous. "Don't what, Trey?" Scarlet challenged him with a loud voice as she stepped closer. "Don't tell you the truth? Don't remind you that she is now mated to a king while you're here sulking like a love-struck puppy?" Trey's hands tightened into fists by his sides, his anger rising more and more as she spoke to him. Scarlet leaned in, her voice now in a whisper. "You're just jealous. Gosh, just admit it. You can't even stand the sight of seeing someone else with her, can you? Especially someone like King Luca, who is greater than you are. He is making her to be the most important person in his world and your tiny heart just can't handle that." Trey turned his back against her, running his right hand through his hair in frustration. Scarlet's expression quickly darkened, and she moved to find herself in front of him again, refusing to be ignored like she never mattered. "You need to stop this right now, Trey. She is not coming back to be with you. And why would she do that? You embarrassed her and rejected her. You said she wasn't good enough for you. Now, you see her with someone who cares for her and you can't take it. F*** men!" "Scarlet, I am warning you. You need to stop here." Trey commanded, his voice becoming a rumble. "But of course, you never listen to me." Scarlet continued, acting like she didn't hear what he said. "You never do. Even though I've tried my best to always be there for you. Who was there when you wanted to become Alpha? Me. Who stood by you when others doubted you? Me. And now, you're throwing all that away because you can't stand the sight of seeing Jess with another?" Trey's glare was so murderous right now, but Scarlet continued to press on, her anger leading her on. "You think she gives a damn about you? Open your goddamn eyes and see! She is with King Luca now. She's his mate. To her, you're nothing. Nothing." Trey's entire body tensed up, his fur finally getting to the top. "And you know what else?" Scarlet continued, her voice entirely laced with venom. "You're nothing to me either if you keep acting like this. I should have known better than to let you have your way with me whenever you pleased." "Get lost." Trey cut her off, his voice calm but deadly. Scarlet froze where she stood, her mouth slightly open as the words seized on her lips. "I said, get lost," Trey repeated one more time, his eyes blazing with anger and fury. "Before I'll do something that I'll live to regret."
