Verity POV
I wrapped my arms around my knees. Sora gave up her mortal life for me to be here, I owe it to her to live this life well. Is she happy though? Jeriko mentioned she had to be with Azreil. Is that against her will? I’ll have to ask him next time.
I stood up and headed back up to town. My buzz was gone and after that conversation I needed another drink. I sat down at the bar in the small tavern-like bar that looked like it was straight out of the lord of the rings. I planned on getting drunk again but as midnight approached I could see the aura of people turning more sinister into a vermillion color. The smell of rogues filled my nostrils and my neck snapped to look for where the smell came from.
This didn’t make sense since there were no shifters in this book. Or maybe there was, the author never did the world building well; they only focused on the small group of characters. But I remember a subplot of people going missing from the neighboring town. Was it the rogues who did it? Did this world have shifters in it? Could I have a chance to get Sora back with me here?
I got up from my seat and followed the smell. It was the smell of rotting flesh and bile. So distinct, but humans never seemed to give it much though mainly thinking it was a dead animal or garbage. Come on focus, my nose wasn’t as strong as it was in my last life. I stood near the edge of town where the forest met the city. Wind came in from the east, the scent stronger than before. Walking into the forest was something I had done every day in my past life. The soft ground beneath my paws the cool breeze wisping through my white fur, but now my boots squelched in the mud as I made my way east. The smell got stronger as I moved forward, listening to the sounds of the forest as I went deeper trying to figure out what exactly was out here.
I found a clearing where the moon casted a silver hue. I saw a pack of wolves surrounding a dead deer snarling and fighting with each other trying to get a piece. Damn it this was a dumb f*****g idea. I can’t fight with wolves in this body. One of the wolves looked over in my direction, I was about to back up but a hand covered my mouth and nose and whispered “Stay quiet.”
My hands immediately flew up to my mouth trying to peel whoever this was off of me. “I’m not here to hurt you, but I can’t fight that many rogues and protect you,” he explained, “now I’m going to take my hand away please don’t scream.”
I looked up at him. He was tall, the man was in a suit with white and black paint on his face making him look like a clown. His jaw line was so defined I couldn’t tell if it was the contour of the face paint or just the shadow of the moonlight. He had a white aura telling me I knew he had pure intentions. He carefully took his hand off my mouth and nose but left it cupping my cheek. His hair was midnight black his tone lean figure pressed against me keeping me flush against the tree, his leg rested in between mine forcing me on my tiptoes so I wouldn’t have my core pressing against him.
Did he know what he was doing? The man's eyes never left the rogue pack though so I doubted it.
“Come on Carsus,” the man whispered. Finally a large black wolf jumped forward quickly taking down each of the rogues. I c****d my head to try and peer seeing one of the rogues latch onto the wolf's ankle but the black wolf seemingly laughed and ravaged the last rogues before looking over to me and the man behind the tree. “Show off,” the clown laughed.
The black wolf walked over to us and stared at me with eyes of emerald green. “Shifters,” I whispered before reaching out and letting my finger run through his fur. The wolf nuzzled into my hand shoving the man aside to get closer to me.
“Carsus you ass calm down she’s fine,” the man flicked the wolf's ear.
The wolf shifted back into a man naked and coated in an ash like substance his face was painted as well but as a skull. He was tall as well as his facial structure much like the other man; twins perhaps. He was toned his abs like they were sculpted by Selune herself. His toned abdomen shaping to a V I couldn’t bring myself to look lower.
“I’d like to see that for myself, Remiel,” Carsus rolled those same green eyes.
“Who are y’all?” I questioned, these men seemingly speaking to each other as if I wasn’t there.
