Chapter One
The sound of my alarm wakes me up. Lazily I hurl my body to the other side of the bed, so I can get the alarm clock and turned it off. It's starting to annoy me already. I try to ignore it, but the sound is too loud and it won't stop. As soon as I open my eyes; throbbing pain immediately comes running in my head.
"f**k hangover." I utter under my breath. I look at the alarm, and it's only 7 o'clock in the morning.
"Just great! I should still be sleeping right now." I give a heavy sigh.
This isn't my usual time to wake up, but due to the reason that my boyfriend cannot make it to work today, I have to wake up this early. If it is not for Kai's nephew who paid him a visit yesterday he will be the one to open the cafe. Last night while we were out partying, I suggested that I should take the morning shift and Kai should be a good host to his nephew. Kai and Jisoo were surprised by my sudden gesture, but they did not say a thing. They just both smiled and nodded their heads. I was trying to be a terrific girlfriend, but I kinda regret it now and wish that my best friend s***h cousin Jisoo will fill in my shift. But I know that it is not possible because just like Kai, she has been out all night with his guy friend. And I'm pretty sure that she is still curled up on her bed, comfortably sleeping. And now that I think about it, I feel jealous that she can sleep until noon. We both take the afternoon shift, so it is okay for us to be out on a late night. Kai did the scheduling thing. He knows that we are a night person, so he took the morning shift.
Since we've moved here in New York, our life has become different. Especially, Jisoo and I. We are not the typical kind of person that you know. We've done lots of stupid things when we were younger. It's just funny how moving here made us somehow a mature and responsible human being. Maybe we just needed a break from our parents, and of course, with the proper guidance of Kai, we easily get through all those terrible things. Personally, we can make decisions now and take responsibilities and resolve our issues without the help of our parents. One more thing that I like about moving here is, we are no longer dependent with our loved ones, though they still insist on giving us allowance every month. That, we didn't argue, because we know we're not going to win. So we just let them. Besides, we never use this money. We just keep it in the bank, so that we can use it for emergency purposes. I'm not trying to be boastful or anything, but seriously, we don't need it. Our little business is doing great since we had started it six months ago. It has always been peachy! Thanks to the people of New York, for loving our coffee and all the pastries we've served.
Of course, we owe it to our handsome and very talented patissier and barista, Kai. Yes, he's straight. Please don't judge him. He just loves cakes. I remember, when we were still young, he would always tell us "I'm going to be a patissier someday." And he is now. Before we've thought that he will become obese, but to our surprised, he grew up to be a good-looking man. When it comes to his physical appearance, you can't see anything bad. Everything about him was just perfectly done. Especially his smile. He has this smile that he kept his mouth closed in a thin, straight line, and it makes him more gorgeous than he already is. His natural dark hair that is always neatly brushed up compliments his dark brown eyes, that's small and spaced evenly apart that every time he looks at me, I felt like I am a burning candle. A burning candle that will start melting in a second if he wouldn't stop staring at me.
"Crazy, right?"
But that's how I feel; I'm just so in love with him. Imagining my life without Kai is as bad as losing my family. I'm used to him. We've been friends since I don't know when. As long as I remember, he was already in my life since I was a baby. Even he is two years older than me; we have been very close. We are inseparable! I miss him when he's not around, and he misses me when I'm out of his sight. My mom used to tease him that he falls in love with me the moment he leads his eyes on me, but it was only in college when Kai decided to tell me what he feels for me. After a week, I've already said yes to him. Can you blame me, I've already liked him the first time I laid my eyes on him. What's the point in taking it slowly, when you already like each other? Besides, I've already known him all my life. And as expected my parents was euphoric when we told them about our relationship. Even my brother, Jackson, he was jubilant when he learned about our relationship. It's maybe because Kai is his bestfriend, and he knows him very well. Though he told Kai not to hurt me, or else he will beat him hard to the point that he will never recognize his face again if he looks in the mirror. And Kai, being Kai, he just smiled at my brother and told him; "You know I would never do that." And he never did. Perhaps, he's just afraid of my brother. Afraid that he will beat him up. No, I'm just kidding. Kai is a good man. We are already on our 6years, and he never once cheated on me. I know it's hard to believe, but what can I say "He's a perfect boyfriend." He just didn't spoil me with material things; he also spoils me with his love. He never changes! And I know how lucky I am to have him in my life.
The sound of the door bell snap from my thoughts.
"Who would it be?"
I look at the wall clock hanging on the right corner of my study table. "It's still early." I mumble under my breath. Lazily, I get up on my dresser and put the makeup set on the table. Then I walk to the door and open it.
To my surprise, I see a delivery boy standing in my doorway.
"Yes?" I ask him with a confused look on my face.
The boy looks at me with a smile on his face; then he hands me the bag. It's just then I realized that he is holding a bouquet of flowers, and some bag.
"Delivery for Ms. Ruby Kim". He smiles sweetly.
"For me?" I ask him wondering.
"Yes, Ma'am." He politely answers never taking his sweet smile. "It's from Mr. Jong. He called us last night and told us to deliver this before 7:30 in the morning."
"Oh!" Is the only word I utter, then I look to the door in front of me, and smile.
The boy looks at me curiously. I just smile at him and mutter, "Thank you".
He nods and smiles back at me. As he was about to leave, I grab his left arm. He stops and looks at me confused.
"Sorry about that." I smile at him sweetly. "Um! Can you just wait up here for a minute?"
With wrinkles on his forehead, he nods his head.
"Thank you." I smile at him and then I close the door. I put the bag and the flower on the side table near the sofa set. Not wanting to make him wait, I run to my bedroom and get some money in my pouch. While heading back to the door, I stumble something and almost fall.
"Urg!" I look to the floor and found the stress ball rolling to the sofa. Shaking my head, I pick it up and put it on the sofa, then I make my steps towards the door and open it. The boy is already leaning on the other side of the wall. He looks bored, but he immediately smiles when he sees me.
"This is for you." I said as I hand him the money.
"What is this for, ma'am?" He looks at me puzzled.
"It's a tip." I pat his shoulder and smile
"You don't have to that, Ma'am." He smiles shyly.
"I want to."
He holds her nape. "Thank you, Ma'am. Have a good day ahead."
"You too." I close the door and walk to the sofa. I grab the bouquet of flower and the bag and put them on the counter top, but before it reaches, something fell on the ground.
Scrunching my face, I decide to get the paper on the floor. It's a card. Excitedly, I open the card and a smile forms on my lips as I read the context of the card.
Hon,
Sorry if you have to wake up this early. Enjoy your breakfast, and I love you.
?
Kai
"The typical Kai." I muter.
Then I fold the card and put the flowers in the vase. With a smile on my face, I start preparing my food.
