Jennet inhaled a deep breath as soon as the phone call ended. Luckily, Luca was an understanding person because she was being a jerk for forcing her boss to end the call.
No one has ever done that to Luca before, probably.
Marvina raised her head. "Who called? It sounds quite important," she said.
Jennet looked at her. "It’s our big boss," she answered with a sigh.
"Mira?" Marvina guessed. No one other than Mira could make Jennet sigh so much.
"No, the other big boss," Jennet denied the first guess.
Marvina eyebrows knitted as she made another guess, "Mr Tybelg?"
Jennet nodded and sighed again. She was unhappy when Marvina mentioned that name.
Marvina asked another question, “What does he want? It is rare for him to call you."
Jennet sighed deeply. Somehow, she was unwilling to tell Marvina about her lunch date with Luca.
Yes, yesterday, she was eager to share the news with her but then after things that happened last night and, after she met the handsome man in her dream, she felt a heavy load had accumulated in her heart.
Jennet cleared her throat while not forgetting to look round; to make sure nobody listened except the two of them. “Make sure to keep calm no matter what I say,” she told her friend.
Marvina chuckled, “I am calm. When have I ever lose my composure?”
“Just in case…” Jennet chirped back.
“Try me.” Marvina challenged.
“Luca asked me out for lunch again today,” Jennet said and slumped her head onto the desk. She sighed again.
Marvina frowned. But, not long after that, she chuckled in disbelief, “I’m sorry, what?”
“I said, Luca, asked me out for lunch,” Jennet repeated, looking serious.
"What?!" Marvina exclaimed in surprise. She froze as her brain processed the situation. Shortly after that, her eyes gleamed in excitement. She stood up and shook Jennet on the arms, "You better go and have lunch with him. It is a rare chance. Go now!"
Jennet glanced at her excited friend and snorted while shaking her head, “I have declined his invitation. I don’t want to die yet,” she explained softly.
She wanted to avoid the possible damage the future may hold if she went out with Luca. His fanatic fans might grate her alive especially Mira, who claimed authority over him although no one could tell if it was true.
Marvina slapped her shoulder. “What nonsense are you talking about? You won’t die. He will be your knight in shining armour.”
Jennet groaned and covered her ears in denial, “I do not want anyone to be my knight in shining armour. I just wanted to be left alone…” She whined. Then, she glanced back at Marvina. She whispered, “Whatever it is, please keep it to yourself. I’ve only told you about this.”
“You can rest assured about that. I won’t breathe out a word,” Marvina promised, “…but, why not you accept him since you know he likes you?” she added.
“I have my reason,” Jennet answered. Her tone went cold.
Marvina noticed the tension in her tone and so she said, “Fine, I will not ask for the reason. But, hey, you need to spill everything to me. I want to know why he asks you out?”
Jennet groaned and shook her head, “I do not know. I have no idea either. But, I did have lunch with him yesterday.”
“Oh, does that explains the happiness I saw yesterday? In the restroom?” Marvina asked, smiling sneakily.
“I wasn’t looking happy,” Jennet denied her statement. “But, whatever it is. I was happy because I got to eat hand cooked meal for once in a while.”
“Okay, lucky girl. I got it. But, tell me more about what happened during lunch. I want to hear more. There must be something happening between the two of you.” Marvina raised her eyebrows while smiling widely.
She won’t stop until she got what she asked for.
Jennet straightened her back and folded her arms. She looked at the eager eyes before her. "Are you serious right now?” She exhaled a deep, heavy sigh.
Marvina hit her shoulder. "Of course, I am serious. What is so bad about having lunch with him?" She rolled her eyes, feeling jealous at her friend's cold reaction.
"You know nothing," Jennet sighed softly. "It's not easy for me, you know."
"What is it that is not easy?" Marvina asked, still not getting what she meant. “Did you promised to marry him?”
"Such thing didn’t happen!" Jennet looked away. She took the packed lunch in front of her and opened it but Marvina snatched it.
"Tell me more about what happened yesterday!" Marvina pestered her for more details. "If you don't, you are not getting your lunch," she said, threatening her friend.
Jennet glared at her, feeling unhappy. "It is complicated," she said.
Marvina raised the packed lunch when Jennet tried to take it from her hand. "Just tell me. Easy. I won't say anything."
Jennet took back her hand and pouted. "Let's eat our lunch while I tell you the whole story," she said, trying to bargain with her friend.
Marvina raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Yes," Jennet replied and took her lunch box from Marvina. "Let’s share the desk while I talk," she added.
Marvina sat close to her after grabbing her lunch box from the other desk. She ate her lunch while Jennet, spilt the story of her encounter with Luca in the morning until the end of their lunch. Her friend even told her about how he asked her to date him for real.
Marvina squealed in excitement as the story ended. She was all jumpy in her seat. "Why didn't you go have lunch with him today? He is so into you now. You must not waste the chance!"
Jennet let out a dry laugh and snorted at her friend. "What are you talking about? It is not what I wanted. I just want to be left alone."
‘I’ll be dead even before I say ‘yes’ to his proposal,’ she thought. To be mocked and to be getting the disdainful look from all of his fanatic fans were scarier than meeting ghosts.
"I’ve never wanted to have any relationship with anyone within the company. I have told you before that I want to live a peaceful life as in being all alone. Now that I have moved away from the apartment and away from everyone who annoys me, I am happy. So, you better not pester me on this matter anymore. Otherwise, I will ignore you for being a busybody," Jennet explained enthusiastically.
Marvina grunted and pulled a long face, "Ah, I am not being a busybody. I just want you to be happy. But, why are you so cold at me after moving into your new house? Are you still angry at me for not helping you moving house?"
Jennet clicked her tongue. "I am not angry at you at all. Now, scram from my desk. Lunch hour is about to end.” She shooed Marvina away. Then, she reminded her, “Remember, do not open your mouth about what we talked about today."
"Yes, yes. You have my words." Marvina rose from her seat and pushed her chair towards her desk while holding her empty lunch box.
As soon as Jennet cleared her desk, she started to drown herself with her paperwork again. At half-past five, she placed all the completed work on top of Mira's desk that was empty as she was nowhere to be seen.
After work, Jennet drove straight to the hospital. She sat outside the consultation room, waiting for her turn. While waiting, she looked around her. She saw a couple sitting not far from her. The wife was pregnant and her face was glowing with happiness.
Jennet smiled alone in her seat. 'I wonder, if I have a husband, maybe I will be happy like her.' She inhaled a deep breath.
Then, she shifted her gaze away from them. Looking at the happy couple left a sharp pang in her heart. 'I cannot get such happiness because I will never be able to open my heart for anyone else...' She sighed alone as she leant her back on the seat.
She had a past that she never tells anyone including Marvina. Even until she dies, she will bring it all to her grave.
Shortly after that, a nurse called her name to enter one of the consultation rooms. Jennet smiled as she rose from her seat and entered the room. Inside the room, a female doctor was sitting on the chair, smiling warmly at her. "Hi there, please be seated. Make yourself comfortable," she said.
Jennet smiled at her. "Thanks."
She sat opposite the doctor and glanced at the name tag on the doctor's chest, 'Dr Tiana.'
"How may I help you today?" Dr Tiana asked her softly.
Jennet cleared her throat before saying, "I think I got chickenpox." Her face turned gloomy after she said it.
