Chapter Twenty-One Heavy boots pounded the cobblestones behind us. I could hear Tahlia’s ragged breathing from where she ran beside me. Even though her legs weren’t as long as mine, she was slighter than I was, and able to keep pace as we tore through the city streets. I knocked barrels, other pedestrians—anything I could get my hands on—into our pursuers’ path as we went. I wrinkled my nose at the pungent scent of offal as one of the barrels burst open behind me. Admon’s guards were still shouting, telling everyone who would listen they were chasing a murderer. It hadn’t taken long for a patrolling regiment of the city guard to join them.
