CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1 Madam Victoria sighs deeply as the thought of what she and her children are going to eat this morning struck her. It's 6 am already, the sun had barely risen over the small apartment, but Victoria was already up as her eyes scanned through the empty fridge for any signs of food. The mother doesn't even know what the children will eat for breakfast as usual. The little cassava flakes that were remaining from the one a neighbor gave them yesterday had been consumed by the children the previous night. Now, there is absolutely nothing in the kitchen to eat.It was a ritual the children had grown accustomed to since their father's death six months ago. Each day, Madam Victoria always remembers her late husband. It was the death of her husband that turned them into beggars. Mr Michael John was a hardworking and a perfect gentleman, who loved his family so much that he provided for all their last needs as an Electrical Engineer before he encountered an accident that took his precious life instantly. Madam Victoria was so sad not because of herself but because of her children, and they cannot even go to their neighbors again for anything because the neighbors are sick and tired of their lifestyle and they are beginning to become a burden to them. The mother, Victoria, had been struggling to make ends meet, working multiple jobs in order to put a roof over their heads and food on their table. Elena is a slim, dark skinned young girl not older than 16, also the second and only girl child of the family. Elena got up from bed and headed straight to the kitchen because her stomach would not stop growling. She shut the fridge as the reality of the situation sinks in. They were running out of options as they have a lot of bills to pay and debts to settle, and the landlord had threatened to throw them out if they didn't pay up the rent by the end of the month. Just then, Madam Victoria walked into the kitchen, her eyes red from lack of sleep. “Good morning sweetie”, she said, forcing a smile onto her face. Almost all the children literally met in the kitchen as a result of hunger. “I was thinking we could go to the food bank and see if they have any groceries we can pick up”. Jordan, the first son, said. Victoria ordered that some of them should stay home and do the cleaning, while some of them go with her to the food bank. They all nodded, trying hard to hide their despair as they divided themselves into two group. They knew they had to be careful with their limited resources, but it was hard for them seeing their mother struggling so much. Victoria, the mother, and Elena had always been the strong ones, but Victoria had been the rock that held their family together. But since their father's passing, the children had seen a change in her. The sparkle in her eye had dimmed, and the lines on her face had deepened. As they walked to the food bank, Elena couldn't help but feel a sense of shame. She used to be a giver back then, but now she felt that she was begging for scraps. The food bank was a crowded, noisy place, filled with people from all over the world, with a lot of distractions here and there from different people and from different angles. Victoria, Elena and Jordan waited in line for hours, their feets aching and their stomach growling. Finally, they reached the front of the line and were given a box of groceries each, as they had to pretend as if they were different people. Their eyes widened as they all looked inside each of the boxes. They have loaves of bread, some jars of peanut butter, some packs of soups, packs of spaghettis and noodles, and more. For a family of Six, it wasn't much for them, but it was better than nothing. As they walked home, Elena and Jordan felt a sense of gratitude towards their mother. Victoria had always put her family first, even when things seemed impossible. As the first and second child, Jordan and Elena knew they had to be strong for their mother to support her through this difficult time. But as they approached their apartment building, Victoria's heart sank. There was a notice on the door, a bright orange sticker that seemed to scream at her. "Eviction Notice," it read. "You have two weeks to pay the rent or vacate the premises.” Elena felt like she had been punched in the gut. They were going to lose their home, the only place they had left. She looked at her mother, who was staring at the notice with a mixture of fear and desperation in her eyes. "What are we going to do, Mom?" Elena asked, her voice shaking. Victoria took a deep breath and put a hand on Elena's shoulder. "We'll figure something out, sweetie," she said. "We always do." But as they stood there, staring at the eviction notice, Elena couldn't help but wonder if this time was different. Could they really overcome this latest setback, or were they staring into the abyss? When they got into their apartment, they share the food and also keep some for later things. While they all ate their food in silence, they are also contemplating on the next move and they are also praying for a miracle. And YES! a miracle must happen. Madam Victoria had to get up the next morning in search of their daily bread. She had been into some menial jobs since the death of her husband. But she cannot do much as she is not used to working right from time. The peanut she is making from the menial jobs isn't enough to feed the family. She asked Jordan and Elena to come with her maybe they can also get something doing in order to get more money As the trio were going on the street, they found a vacant post in need of a cleaner by the wall of a gas station. They all rushed inside the gas station like a thief to make enquiries “We can only employ one person please, who amongst you is applying?” The manager asked They were still contemplating on who to go for the job when a black sleek tinted jeep drive into the station, immediately, the manager left them unaware and ran towards the jeep “Who could that be?” Victoria and her children murmured amongst themselves…
