Nasty encounter
Callahan dashed through the labyrinth of trees covered in darkness, his legs moving in a rush and his mind racing with thoughts. He groaned under his breath, regretting his decision to spend so much time in Ravenwood. He was late and rushing back home, knowing his mother would be worried.
“Damn it, I should have left earlier,” he grumbled, his heart racing in his chest. He couldn't get his mind off his mother's disappointment.
Why did he always let time pass him by?
Callahan didn't want to see his mother's enraged face. She had warned him numerous times that travelling to Ravenwood alone was dangerous, but he had never heeded her warnings. He has no reason to. He assumed she was being paranoid and overprotective for no apparent reason.
Callahan hadn't experienced anything slightly scary since he began travelling to Ravenwood alone. It was a lively town, full of activity and excitement, unlike the peaceful but dangerous forest where he lived.
It was difficult to spend every day at home in the quiet woodland with no friends to play with. He would constantly sneak into Ravenwood without his mother's knowledge, a place where he could see and play with youngsters who were about his age and were full of life, laughter, and company.
Nothing had ever gone wrong before, after all. The good times he enjoyed in Ravenwood surpassed any worries his mother tried to implant in him. Why should he be stuck in the ordinary when he might be having the time of his life at Ravenwood?
What if his mother discovered the truth? What if she forbids him from ever visiting Ravenwood? The thought of abandoning his newfound pals and being trapped in never-ending seclusion filled him with terror. He had grown to treasure his secret times at Ravenwood, where he felt he genuinely belonged.
But what kind of lies could he possibly tell his mother? He searched his thoughts, looking for a believable reason that wouldn't bring her wrath down on him. Anything to lessen the shock of his lateness, anything to keep himself from being discovered and disappointed by her.
His legs were tired and achy from the lengthy run. He came to a sudden halt, stooping over to regain his breath and grabbing his knees for support. Sweat beaded on his brow, and he closed his eyes to calm his troubled mind. But just as he was about to move, he noticed a flicker in the darkness.
Callahan quickly unsheathed a gleaming blade from his belt, sensing danger. He would not be caught off guard by the dangers of the jungle.
He saw the golden flash again, teasingly appearing and disappearing as he peered into the dark. As the shimmering glow steadied, resembling a pair of shining eyes, his heart hammered heavily in his chest.
Callahan's hold on the hilt of his dagger tightened, his knuckles going white. The golden eyes grew larger, approaching closer with an unsettling slowness. His breath caught in his throat as he realized what lay beyond the darkness was closing in on him.
Without warning, a terrifying thing emerged from the darkness. Callahan exclaimed, his eyes wide with terror. It stood there in front of him, bathed in the brightness of moonlight seeping through the dense canopy above. It was a grey wolf, its massive physique bristling with uncontrollable ferocity.
The wolf's eyes were wide and burning with a fury that sent shivers down Callahan's spine. The terrible beast growled, revealing a set of hideous, jagged fangs.
The gigantic wolf approached Callahan slowly, but Instead of bracing himself for battle, Callahan became immobilized, unable to take his gaze away from the terror before him.
The wolf opened its mouth with an earth-shattering roar, the force of its breath whipping through the air and scattering Callahan's hair over his face. The force of the sound jolted Callahan awake from his daze.
Callahan's survival instincts kicked in without a second thought, and he bolted, his legs carrying him as fast as they could. The wolf's menacing howls filled the air, chasing him from behind.
Callahan dashed through the woodland with agility, weaving, jumping, and dodging obstacles that tried to stop him.
Callahan fell, but he pushed himself back up, ignoring the pain, and continued running.
The trees danced around him in a frenzy, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers, scraping at his skin. But Callahan would not give up. His body pleaded for rest, but he persisted.
Frantically, Callahan whispered, “I have to find a way out!”
Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to a nearby tree, its branches barely out of reach. He moved desperately towards it, hope coursing through his tired body. Using every ounce of power he had left, he pushed himself forward and sprang, his hands clutching the branch.
But before Callahan could pull himself up, another wolf lunged at him from the shadows, knocking him to the ground. Panic flooded his veins as he tasted the ground under him, his mind racing to find a way out of this nightmare situation.
The grey wolf that had been hunting him came from the shadows instantly and joined the new wolf. Callahan's heart plummeted as the realization hit him: this was his last stand. He retreated, his body shivering and his chest heaving with dread and adrenaline.
Struggling to keep his cool. Callahan muttered, “Stay back! Stay away from me!”
The wolves roared ferociously, their teeth bared in desire. Callahan's quivering palm clenched on the hilt of his dagger, his only weapon. In a desperate attempt to scare them away, he swung the dagger erratically between the howling monsters.
“Please leave me alone!” Callahan yelled desperately.
His tactics to ward them off, however, were futile. The wolves charged at him, their jaws snapping and claws tearing through his clothes and skin. As their merciless assault continued, Callahan shouted in anguish and terror.
“No! No!”
