Chapter 3---Mom Dies During Labor

The driver jumped out of the car and quickly lifted the unconscious woman lying in front of the vehicle into the backseat—only then noticing the urn clutched tightly in her arms. Bad luck... He tugged hard, but it wouldn't budge. Hesitant and trembling, he turned his eyes toward the man beside him. "M-Mr. Chase, this…" Chase Fields' icy gaze flicked briefly over the urn pressed against the woman's chest. His voice remained calm. "Get back to driving." The driver scrambled into the driver's seat and restarted the engine. Outside, the rain intensified, and the sky grew darker. Inside the car, the light was dim. Chase lowered his eyes. The woman beside him lay still, her long black hair soaked and clinging to her pale, delicate face. A long gash on her pale arm oozed blood steadily. She looked broken, heartbreakingly fragile. She didn't seem like someone staging an accident. The road was slick, the fog thick. As the driver took a sharp turn, the woman's limp body slid gently onto the man's lap. Chase's brow tightened. He looked down— Her face was pressed against his dress pants... His expression turned instantly colder. "Lao Liu, should I enroll you in driving school all over again?" Lao Liu glanced nervously in the rearview mirror, utterly embarrassed. He forced a few awkward laughs. "Sorry, Mr. Chase, so sorry. The rain's just too heavy tonight." With cold, deliberate fingers, Chase pushed the woman's body aside. She remained unconscious, showing no sign of waking. Chase stared at her bloodless, soft lips. His dark eyes narrowed slightly. ... At the hospital, Wendy Moore slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was a blurry female figure moving nearby. "Wendy! You're awake! You scared me half to death!" Yvonne Perry—her college classmate and closest friend. Wendy's dry, cracked lips trembled weakly. "Yvonne? How... how did you get here?" She reached for her chest—her father's urn was gone. Struggling to sit up, she cried out anxiously, "Yvonne, did you see my father's urn?" Yvonne quickly helped her back down. "It's right here, it didn't go anywhere. Don't get up. The doctor said you're very weak." She handed the urn to Wendy, who snatched it and clutched it fiercely, as if it were the most precious thing in the world, holding it with all her strength. After hearing what had happened to Wendy's family, Yvonne raged against the Mrs. Scott and her daughter for a long time. She pulled Wendy into a tight embrace and said sympathetically, "If I hadn't come to the hospital today to visit my little cousin—the newborn in the next VIP nursery—I wouldn't have found you. My uncle's family is right next door. If you need anything, call me. Even if I can't help, my uncle definitely can. Rest well for now. I'll check on my cousin and come back." Yvonne patted Wendy's back gently, let her keep holding the urn, tucked the blanket around her, and gave her a warm smile. "Wendy, take good care of yourself. Call me if you need anything!" Wendy's mind was in chaos. Closing her eyes, all she could see was her father leaping from a high-rise. Tears slipped silently from the corners of her eyes. ... In the neighboring nursery. As Yvonne quietly pushed open the door, she immediately sensed a heavy atmosphere. Brandon Fields leaned on his cane, gazing at the newborn in the incubator with complex eyes. "This is madness, Chase! I never expected you to do something so reckless!" The old man raised his cane and struck Chase hard on the leg. In a low, furious voice, he demanded, "Where is the baby's biological mother?" Chase pressed his thin lips together. His sharp, composed face showed not a flicker of emotion. "She died in childbirth." "..." Brandon was so enraged his blood surged. "Are you trying to kill me?!" Yvonne leaned against the incubator, gently holding the old man's arm. "Grandpa, look how adorable your little granddaughter is. Don't be angry. Didn't you keep urging Uncle Chase to get married and have kids? Now he has a daughter, and you're upset?" "I told him to get married first, then have children—not to leap straight to fatherhood overnight! Without a word, he suddenly brings home a baby girl! Does he have any respect for me as his father?" Just then, a nurse entered and politely reminded them, "Mr. Chairman Fields, please keep your voice down. You might disturb the baby." Brandon opened his mouth, glanced at the adorable infant in the incubator, let out a helpless sigh, gripped his cane, and turned to leave. Yvonne gave Chase a teasing smile. "Uncle Chase, you're really something. No girlfriend, and already a daughter. Congratulations." "Adult matters—stay out of it, kid." Chase cast a deep, lingering look at the sleeping infant, then ordered, "Keep an eye on your sister. I'll step out for a moment." With that commanding tone, Chase strode out of the nursery, his long legs carrying him away. Driver Lao Liu had just returned from paying the bills. "Mr. Chase, I've settled all the medical fees for that girl." "Where is she?" "She's in the next room, look—" Lao Liu pointed toward the adjacent ward, only to find the bed empty. Confused, he scratched the back of his head. "Huh? Where'd she go?" A nurse entered to tidy up the room. Chase frowned and asked, "Where's the girl who was staying in this room?" "You know her? She just left."
