Chapter 5: Beneath the Surface

The storm broke just after midnight. Siena stood on her penthouse balcony, watching the rain slice across the city skyline like glass. Her phone buzzed beside her. Adrian: I’m outside. Didn’t want to call. She stared at the message for a long second before typing: Siena: Why are you here? Adrian: Because I know you don’t want to be alone tonight. And he was right. A few minutes later, the elevator opened, and there he was, rain-soaked, collar up, eyes burning through her. He didn’t say anything at first, just stepped inside, dripping water onto her floor. “Storm’s getting worse,” he said. “So is everything else.” She turned away, pouring herself a drink of whiskey, no ice. Her father was still slipping further into silence. The board was fracturing beneath her. The anonymous whistleblower hadn’t sent anything new. And every day, Dorian Vale’s shadow grew longer. “I found something,” Adrian said, pulling out his phone. “Your father’s old emails are buried in a private archive. Someone didn’t want them found.” Siena scanned the screen. Dozens of emails, all from fifteen years ago, all connected to Dorian Vale. “What are these?” she asked, her voice hushed. “Evidence of a private agreement, your father and mine But it wasn’t business it was personal. There was a woman involved, Someone they both knew.” Siena's heart sank. “My mother?” Adrian nodded. The revelation hit like a slap. Siena’s mother had died when she was twelve. She’d always believed it was from illness. But there had always been whispers, arguments behind doors memories she couldn’t piece together. Now, fragments were aligning. “Your father loved her,” Adrian said quietly. “Before she married Charles Kade. Before the empires. The war between them wasn’t just about money. It was about her.” Siena turned away, her mind reeling. “I don’t know what this changes,” she said. “But it makes everything feel more poisoned.” Adrian moved closer. “It explains why he wants your company so badly. It’s not just revenge, it’s personal. He wants to erase your father’s legacy, erase you.” Her voice cracked. “And what do you want, Adrian?” He didn’t hesitate. “You.” She looked up, eyes burning. “You want me until it’s inconvenient. Until your name is on my company.” “No,” he said, stepping forward. “I want you in charge of your company. I want your hands on it, your vision driving it. And if standing next to you ruins my name, then so be it.” Silence. Then he added, softly: “But I also want the part of you you’ve been hiding. The part that wants someone to stay.” Siena didn’t speak. She just walked up to him and kissed him hard, desperate, like she was falling and grabbing onto the only thing solid. He kissed her back, hands anchoring her waist, and for a moment, the world outside the betrayal, the lies, the war fell away. When they pulled apart, she whispered, “This doesn’t change anything.” He rested his forehead against hers. “No, but it changes everything.” Later That Night – Surveillance Room, ValeCorp Headquarters Dorian Vale stood before a wall of monitors, watching footage that should not have existed. Siena Adrian Kissing. He clenched his fist. “Foolish boy,” he muttered. “He thinks she’s a game. She thinks he’s a lifeline, but I built him and I can break him.” He turned to his assistant. “Send the message.” The Next Morning – Siena’s Office Siena stepped into her office to find a single envelope on her desk. No stamp, no name Inside was a photo. Adrian With her father fifteen years ago. A young Adrian, barely a teenager, was standing behind Charles Kade at a private gala. Laughing. On the back, in inked handwriting: “He was always close. Closer than you think– D” Siena dropped the photo, her blood running cold. What if Adrian had always been part of the plan?
