Morning after the storm.
Sun was out like the thunder never happened. The penthouse smelled like coffee and rain on concrete.
Elias woke up alone. Blanket still warm where Damien had been. Key on his finger caught the light.
He found Damien in the kitchen. Back to him. Making eggs. Casual. Like he hadn’t spent 2 hours holding Elias through thunder at 2:17 AM.
“You slept through sunrise,” Damien said without turning. “First time in months.”
Elias rubbed his eyes. “Because you didn’t let go.”
Damien turned. Plated the eggs. Set one in front of Elias at the dining table.
He sat. Close. Knee brushing Elias’s under the table like always.
“After the storm comes training,” Damien said. He pushed the plate closer. “Eat.”
Elias ate. Quiet. When he was done, Damien stood and held out his hand.
“Not punishment,” Damien said before Elias could tense. “Control. You’ve spent 6 months reacting. Flinching. Freezing. Today you learn to choose.”
Elias took his hand.

*Warehouse District. 10:30 AM*
Dad’s truck was waiting. Door open. Engine off.
Damien didn’t get in the driver’s seat. He opened the passenger door for Elias.
“Your turn,” he said.
Elias slid in. Hands on the wheel. Heart racing. Not fear. Something else. Anticipation.
Damien got in the driver’s side. Then reached across Elias and adjusted the seat. His arm brushed Elias’s chest. Didn’t move away right away.
“Rule 11,” Damien said. Voice low. “Control isn’t about holding back. It’s about knowing when to move.”
He put his hands over Elias’s on the wheel. Ma maimed hand covering Elias’s whole hands. Same as Ch 15, but different now. Steadier.
“Feel that?” Damien pressed their hands on the wheel. “This is power. You can grip it tight and crash. Or you can hold it steady and drive.”
He guided Elias’s foot to the clutch. Slow. “Control your breath first. Then your foot. Then the truck.”
In. Out. In. Out. Damien’s chest against Elias’s back again.
Elias started the engine. It vibrated to life. He stalled immediately.
Damien didn’t scold. Didn’t grab. He just restarted it with him. “Again. You choose when to release the clutch. Not fear. Not me. You.”
They practiced. Stall. Restart. Roll forward an inch. Stop.
Every time Elias panicked, Damien’s hand would squeeze his waist. Anchor. “Control,” he’d murmur. “Not punishment. Choice.”
After an hour, Elias got it. The truck rolled forward. Smooth. 10 meters. 20 meters.
He laughed. Surprised. “I’m driving.”
“You are,” Damien said against his ear. “Because you chose to. Not because I forced you.”
Damien let go of the wheel. Let go of the gear shift. Hands on Elias’s waist now. Letting him steer alone.
Elias drove. Wobbly. Slow. But driving.
When they stopped, Damien turned him in the seat. Forehead to forehead.
“See?” Damien whispered. “Control. You thought I’d punish you for stalling. I won’t. I’ll teach you. Same with everything else. With anger. With fear. With wanting me.”
Elias’s breath caught at the last part. “With wanting you?”
Damien’s thumb brushed his jaw. “Control isn’t denial, Elias. It’s knowing what you want... and choosing it anyway. Without fear.”
Elias looked at their hands on the wheel. His. Damien’s. The key on his finger.
“I choose this,” he whispered. “The truck. The lessons. You.”
Damien closed his eyes. Pressed his mouth to Elias’s temple. Not a kiss. A mark. Same spot as Ch 16.
“My keyholder,” he said. “Learning control.”
