CHAPTER 19 : THE TEST

They got home after the truck lesson. Sun was low. Penthouse quiet. Elias’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking. Not fear-shaking. The kind that came after holding power in your hands for the first time and not crashing. And the word. _Wanting._ Damien said it while his hands covered Elias’s on the wheel. _Control isn’t denial. It’s knowing what you want... and choosing it anyway._ Elias replayed it all afternoon. While washing his hands. While eating. While sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the key on his finger. Control. Choice. Not flinching. He stood in front of the bathroom mirror at dusk. Towel around his waist. Room steamy from the shower. Collarbone bare. His fingers touched his neck. Slow. Testing. Right under his jaw. Where Damien’s mouth had pressed before. Where he’d rested his lips after Elias said “I choose this.” The skin was sensitive there. Like it remembered. Wanting. The word burned under his skin now. He didn’t know what to do with it. Damien taught him control. So he chose. He pulled on a black shirt. High collar. The kind that went all the way up to the base of his throat. Purposeful. He checked it in the mirror twice. Made sure it covered everything. Then he walked out. Damien was in his office. Door open. Always open now. Because of the key. Lamplight only. Papers spread across the desk. Damien’s sleeves rolled up. He didn’t look up when Elias entered. But his shoulders shifted. He knew. Elias stopped in front of the desk. 3 feet away. Then 2. Then 1. Damien finally looked up. Eyes scanned him once. Took in the high collar. The way Elias’s hands were fisted at his sides. The way he wasn’t looking at the floor. “You’re thinking loud,” Damien said. He set his pen down. Slow. Deliberate. The sound of it hitting the desk was too loud in the quiet room. Elias swallowed. His throat moved against the collar. “You said control. About wanting.” Damien leaned back in his chair. The leather creaked. He didn’t smile. Didn’t frown. Just watched. Waiting. Elias took another step. Now he was standing between Damien’s knees. Close enough to feel the heat off him. Close enough that Damien would have to move to stand. “I can’t stop thinking about it,” Elias admitted. Voice barely above a whisper. It cracked on the last word. “The word you used. Wanting. Me.” Damien went still. Completely still. The only thing that moved was his eyes. They went dark. Focused. Like he was cataloging every breath Elias took. “And?” Damien said. One word. Low. It pulled the tension tighter. Elias’s heart hammered. Control. Choice. Not flinching. His hand shook as he reached up. Fingers at his collar. He pulled it down. Just an inch. Just enough. The shirt slipped off one side of his neck. Right under his jaw, faint against his skin, was a mark. Not dark. Not violent. Just a spot of color. Small. Hidden. The kind only someone close would ever see. Only someone who was allowed that close. Only Damien. “Proof,” Elias whispered. He forced himself to look up. Into Damien’s eyes. No flinch. “That I choose it. That I’m not scared of the word anymore. Wanting.” The room went dead quiet. Damien stared at the spot. 1 second. 2 seconds. 3 seconds. His jaw ticked once. The only sign he wasn’t stone. Then his hand came up. Slow. Like he was giving Elias time to move away. His thumb brushed the mark once. Just once. Gentle. Reverent. Like it was something sacred. He didn’t say anything. Didn’t make a joke. Didn’t make it dirty. He just stood. Slow. The chair rolled back silently on the floor. Both hands came up and settled on Elias’s waist. Strong. Grounding. He pulled Elias in until their foreheads touched. Until their breathing synced. “Control,” Damien said against his skin. Voice rough. Lower than before. Like it took effort to keep it level. “You chose. You marked yourself. For me.” Elias nodded against his forehead. His hands came up and fisted in Damien’s shirt. Holding on. “Only you see it. Only you.” For 10 seconds, neither moved. Then Damien exhaled. It sounded like he’d been holding his breath. He buried his face in Elias’s neck. Not biting. Not claiming. Just breathing there. Right over the hidden mark. Like he was memorizing the exact spot. Like he was making sure it was real. His mouth moved against Elias’s skin when he spoke. “My keyholder. You learn fast. Too fast.” Elias’s fingers tightened in his shirt. “Is it okay?” he asked, small. Vulnerable. “Wanting? Choosing? Marking myself for you?” Damien pulled back just an inch. Just enough to look at him. Eyes serious. No mask. No walls. Just Damien. “It’s human,” he said. Thumb brushing Elias’s jaw, right over the hidden mark, then down to his chin, tilting his face up. “Wanting is human. Choosing is human. And you did both with control. That makes it right. That makes it yours.” He held Elias’s gaze for a long moment. Let the weight of it settle. Then he reached up with both hands and adjusted Elias’s collar. Slow. Careful. Pulling the fabric back up until the mark disappeared. Until it was hidden again. “High collar suits you,” Damien said quietly. “Because it means only I know it’s there. Only I get to see the proof.” He smoothed the collar at the back of Elias’s neck. Fingers lingered. Protecting. “No one else sees it,” Damien said. Final. Possessive without cruelty. “No one else gets to. That’s just for me. That’s our secret. Our control.” Elias closed his eyes. The tension in his chest loosened a fraction. He leaned into Damien’s chest. Let Damien’s arms come around his back. Full. Secure. “Okay,” he whispered into Damien’s shirt. Damien rested his chin on top of Elias’s head. One hand stayed at the back of his neck. Guarding the secret.
