Chapter 1 Selaria

3878 Words
Waking from another weird dream, I look over at my desk where I left my dream diary yesterday morning. Glancing up at the window I notice that the curtains have parted slightly and I can see the sky has grey clouds and it looks like it is going to rain, possibly even storm.   I get up from my bed and walk over to my desk and sit down grabbing my diary remembering the previous entries that I made.   I’ve had the same dream since the Head Elder of the Elemental Magic Society arrived to ask my father to go back to Scotland to work for them, which meant that I am to continue my studies at the Elemental Boarding Academy in Scotland instead of at a normal school here in America.   My dad mentioned to me when he sensed the Head Elder from the Elemental Magic Society at the door, and told me not to use my powers and to let him do all the talking and to agree with everything he said, if they wanted to see what I could do, I was to lift a small piece of paper and make it seem like it took a lot of energy to do so.   When they came in, Elder Zarconian was surprised when he saw me, he said that the reason I hadn’t been asked to go to the Academy before this was because my mother was non-magical.   My powers are slightly different then my dad’s, his are mainly telekinesis and empathy. Whereas myself, I can do anything that involves nature, if nature can create it, I can control it. I also have telekinesis and empathy like my dad, but mine seems to be a little stronger than his.   He was always telling me that I’m going to be extremely powerful and he hoped that the Elemental Magic Society would never come and take me to the Academy for those like us. Because they would just use my powers for their own benefit and I would be a prisoner. But they did come, originally to see if my dad would come back to work for them, and that’s when Elder Zarconian saw something in my aura that he liked and now I have to go to the Academy.   When they left, my dad had told me that he would keep in touch and that the job they have him doing was going to be easy and shouldn’t take him long. He gave me a couple of numbers and addresses in case I hadn’t heard from him after a month.   Today is the day my father and I head to the Academy, I huff and look to where I placed my bags and suitcase. Neither us are happy about me going to the Academy, but we have no choice, especially since the Head Elder now knows of my existence.   I open my diary to a blank page to start writing about the first dream that I had last night. For a second I had to remember what it was about, the second dream had caught me off guard, which was pretty surprising and very real, more real than the first dream.   I look down at the blank page and start writing my first dream, with a gold pen my father had given me with the diary. I put in the date and write.   I had the dream again last night of a place that felt familiar, the clothes and the scenery looked like it was the middle ages, but it wasn’t a movie or a story that I had read, it felt like I had been there before in real life.   It was as if I was following a young woman wearing an emerald cloak over a blue gown with gold embroidering and emerald flowers, she opened a large wooden door and entered the room, there was an elderly man wearing a midnight blue cloak and royal battle armour, staring out an extremely large window that took up the majority of the wall, watching the commotion outside with a concerned look on his well weathered face.   “Father, is all well?” I heard her ask in a soft velvet voice walking towards him.   When she arrived at the window she looked down at the commotion below with a confused look on her fair face.   “It isn’t well, my fair daughter.” The elderly man told her, turning and looking at her with sorrow in his eyes. “One of the scouts has brought distressing news that the Kingdoms are gathering together in the furthest Kingdom.”   “But why?” She asks shocked and confused by what her father had said and what was going on outside the window below them.   “It is believed that they want the crystals of Sparkonia and use them for evil.” He answers turning and going over to a battle table that was in the center of the room.   I didn’t know what these crystals were or if they were real, I had dreamed about them yesterday as well and decided to research them and found nothing. I was hoping that when I get to the Academy there might be answers there about these crystals. I know that it’s just a dream, but somehow I know that it’s real.   I shake my head and go back to my diary, knowing that I don’t have much time to spend writing in it this morning, since we will be leaving soon.   The woman stared at him in disbelief, stunned at the revelation of what he had said. “But father no-one has declared war against us for over eighty years, since King Edgar declared war and was defeated.”   “I am aware of this, but we have been told on good authority that they have been meeting for many moons planning on declaring war against us.” He said looking up from the table and looking at her.   As she stood in front of the window, the sun shone through at that moment and made her look like an angel sent from the heavens above. She took one last look out the window and walked over to the table and sat gracefully on one of the chairs that surrounded the table.   “But father isn’t there something we can do to stop this from happening?” She asked looking at him worried, more for the elderly and children then for herself.   He took a deep breath and sat down in the chair beside her and said. “I know that this is a lot to take in, but I need you to be strong for our people.”   “How can I be strong for our people when it seems you have known about this longer then today?” She asked standing up outraged by his knowledge and secrecy regarding this. “How can I be strong for our people when their King hasn’t even warned them about what is coming?” She argued further.   A man in what looks like a soldier’s uniform came in at that moment and interrupted their conversation. “Sire, they are surrounding Sparkonia as we speak.  If you want to do what you are planning, then we better hurry, we do not have much time.”   She turned to her father shocked, unable to comprehend what was being said. “There has to be another way.” She says to both of them.   Another thing to look for at the Academy, I had searched the school and the town library for a King Edgar and found nothing. Dad said that the Academy might have the information that I am after, since they have scrolls as well as books.   I look outside and realise that I have to hurry up before my dad calls me down for breakfast, a meal he believes is the most important of the day. I haven’t told him much about the dreams that I’ve been having, only that they seem real and that I’ve been looking for information about them.   The soldier didn’t say anything he just stood there with his head bowed, seeming to await the Kings orders.   “Princess Alania, I was made aware of this five days ago, and the wise men and my council have been trying to find another way to do this, but we have all agreed that war is the only answer.” The King said walking around the table and grabbing her hands. He looked over to the soldier and asked. “Are they ready?”   “Yes Sire.” He replied walking over to the table and seemed to concentrate on it.   Alania is a nice name, I think it suits her well. I underline it to remind myself to look it up, when I looked up everything else.   “Alania we need to address our people about what is going on and they need to know that they will be safe.” The King said looking at her with a look of complete control and no emotion, even though she knew that this had to be hard for him to do.   She nodded her understanding and asked. “How are we going to reassure them that everything will be ok?”   “I will be going with more than half of our best warriors and the rest will be staying here.” He said taking a seat. “The wise ones will be staying here as well, with the use of the Crystals and the Guardians, you are going to put up a veil of illusion and a shield so no-one can get in, but pass through as if Sparkonia is no longer here.”   She looked at him shocked, she knew that he won’t win with so few warriors and that he would have a better chance with all of the warriors. She wants to interrupt him, but all she does is look at the soldier who nods at her confirming what her father was saying.   She looked back at her father and he says. “The warriors and soldiers are aware of this and are with their families explaining this.” He takes a deep breath and continues. “Sparkonia will not disappear, but anyone who thinks that it is only cloaked will rethink it as they will only see the edge of the neighboring Kingdom.”   “What?” She asked sounding confused, not believing that this could be possible. “It will seem like it has gone completely but it will still be here, I’m sorry father I don’t understand, how can that be possible.”   “Yes, they will not be able to touch Sparkonia and it will be safe.” He said to her hoping she understood what he was saying and if she didn’t he knew she would when they would put the veil and shield up.   “Is there no another way?” She asked again sounding scared. “Can’t we use our powers to fight if there isn’t a way to bring peace?”   “It is too late for that.” He said getting up and while holding her hand he stands and pulls her hands up lightly to stand as well.   She stood and he placed her hand into the crook of his arm and guided her slowly out of the room and onto a balcony at the end of the room, where their people were waiting to be addressed, he dropped her hand and walked alone over to the railing.   “My people I know you are all wondering why I have called you all here today.” He said in a loud strong voice looking out at them.   After a while, she decided to walk over and stand by him, he glanced at her with a proud look on his face and smiled encouragingly at her and held out his hand to her, which she grabbed and squeezed.   "There is a war coming.” He continued.   There were rumblings down where the people were standing and one of them said in a loud voice. “But there hasn’t been a war since the battle with King Edgar.” Others murmured their agreement.   “Yes I am aware of this. A scout has seen them marching with their banners and are coming to take our Kingdom.” Her father answered, not even upset by what was said. “Then we will all fight.” The voice said sounding strong. There were murmurings of both agreement and fear of what he had suggested.   “No, if they come here then our children will be in danger.” The Princess said, drawing everyone’s attention to her.   “This is true, that is why only some of our warriors will be coming with me. The others will be staying here and between them, the wise ones, the Guardians and my daughter there will be enough to create a veil and a shield to keep you all safe.” The King said to them, but before anyone could speak he continued. “No-one will be able to come back in or leave once it is in place.”   The silence was so loud you could have heard a pin drop while this sunk in. But it was the Princess that finally said something.   “I know this is not what we want and we will not be prisoners because it will be the boarder of the Kingdom that will have the shield and veil, we will still have our farms and forests. But we will not be able to go anywhere near the neighbouring Kingdoms.” She started to think that there was going to be an uprising after what she said.   “But what about our husbands and sons will they be able to come back in?” A woman in the crowd asked sounding scared and worried.   “No, and the wives and families of the men that are coming with me to help hold off the kingdoms that are on their way, have already been told and they, I do believe have said their goodbyes.” The King said.   He looked at his daughter and then pulled her in a hug and held her tightly, then went down the stairs to where his horse was waiting with the warriors that were going with him, and that was when she realised that this was the last time she was going to ever see him again.   She looked down at her people and realised that they had also realised that they weren’t the only ones losing their loved ones, but so was she.   “Long live our King.” She said in a loud voice as tears glistening in her eyes.   The rest of the people repeated what she said, and then her father looked up at her with pride in his eyes. As the King and the warriors left she looked out at her people and sees some of them whispering.    “I am not staying here to be a prisoner, those that don’t want to become prisoners, let’s depart before we are trapped.” One of them said loudly and before she could say anything a group of them left in a hurry.   “Please everyone we won’t be prisoners, I know this is hard to believe but this will not be permanent.” She said to the remaining people.   “We believe you and we will stay and help you put up the shield and the veil our Queen.” Someone said below her.   She looked down and called for the wise ones and the Guardians to come forward. They all gathered into two circles, the wise ones, Alania, the warriors and the guardians were in the first and inner circle and the rest of the people of the Kingdom and the soldiers were in the outer and larger circle.   I hear my alarm go off, which means that I have to stop writing and get ready to leave. I walk over to my dresser, and grab the clothes that I am going to wear today. I placed them on top of the dresser last night so that I would have time to write in my diary this morning.   After getting dressed, I grab my diary and the photo of my mum, dad and myself on holidays before my birthday years ago, we are sitting on the grass having a picnic lunch with a few friends that joined us for a horse ride, the horses that we borrowed were in the background. The guide had taken the photo for us, my mum had insisted on having the photo taken. I didn’t know why then, but I do now.   My dad stopped working for the Society after he married my mum because she was normal and she didn’t know what dad was. He used to be a Tracker and that’s how he met my mum, he never told me much about how they met, he doesn’t like to talk about her much since she left. I know my dad is still trying to find her, but somehow I feel that he won’t find her, yet.   I open my desk and look down at the note that she had left on my desk, there was a present and a card with it for my tenth birthday. Her note told me that she was sorry but she had to leave and that she wished she could have been there for my birthday. I found out later that my dad also had a note.   I sometimes wonder what she is doing, and sometimes I wish she isn’t happy and that she is as miserable as dad and I are, but then I wonder, maybe she wasn’t happy here and she found someone else that makes her happy, or maybe it was because she somehow found out that I’m not like her, I’m not normal and it scared her so much that she left in fear.   My dad said that she could be moving around, but I wasn’t sure why she would do that unless she knew what he could do. The only other explanation was that she was dead. My dad had sensed her a few times, and I had gone with him when I was on holidays wondering if we would find her, but like the other times, we didn’t have any success.   Dad told me that it wasn’t my fault that she left and if she had found out that I have powers than it would have been his fault, because he didn’t tell her about him. I understand why he didn’t and why he couldn’t tell her, he told me when I went to high school that I wasn’t allowed to tell any of my friends, at first I wasn’t sure why, until I told one of them and they freaked out. For a whole month I was called nasty things like, ‘Witch and freak’.   After that dreadful month a new girl befriended me and we have been friends since. I thought she was cool, even dad liked her. Her name is Lidia, she looks older than me and she dresses a little different, but that’s what makes her so awesome and why we hit it off so quickly. People made fun of her and she laughed about it, but when I found out that I would be going to the Academy, she said that her family would be moving away as well. She didn’t tell me before because she didn’t like goodbyes.   We both promised to keep in touch with each other. She gave me her new address in case there is no internet at the Academy or if I’m not able to call her either. I told her that I would send her my new address with the first letter that I write to her. I have already started the letter to her.   I wonder downstairs with my bags packed and find my father sitting at the kitchen table, looking over some papers that were given to him before Elder Zarconian left with his guards. He looks up when he hears the second bottom step creak, I used to jump it sometimes, or hover over it so he wouldn’t hear me, but with the Warriors watching, I wasn’t able to do it.   “Ready to go?” He asks.   “Yes. I have packed everything I could think of that I would need.” I say and sit down in the chair opposite him.   He had made breakfast for me, which helped cheer me up, even though it was only toast, cereal and orange juice. I could see that this was taking a toll on him, my mum left him and now I was being forced to stay away from him.   “Good. When Elder Zarconian asks you what you want to become, so they know what classes to put you in, what are you going to say?” He asks looking worried.   “I was thinking maybe a Watcher or a Tracker like you, what do you think?” I ask him.   He looks at me and smiles. “Hmm maybe a Watcher, to be a Tracker you will have to show powers that we told them you don’t have, but be careful.” He says looking out the window and continues deep in thought. “I have never trusted the Elders, if you ever need me, just call me, ok. I will always be there for you no matter what.” He looks back at me and smiles, then gathers the papers in front of him and puts them in the folder.   “Ok dad, I’ll be careful, I promise.” I say looking out the same window, thinking about the two dreams I had last night, one with the woman and then for some reason it was interrupted by another dream, it was weird.   I went from watching Princess or Queen Alania saying goodbye to her father and then I was standing in a room, and there was a guy, a guy I had been dreaming of for the past few weeks. His eyes and hair are as black as midnight. I had never even been in the room before either, but somehow I knew where I was, the room looked to be someone’s bedroom. As we stood there talking (about what I don’t remember) somehow I felt drawn to him. After a while he stopped talking to me and bent down and kissed me.   When he pulled away he smiled and said. “I will never forget you, and I will always love and protect you.” And then the dream ended.   “Selaria, Selaria!” I hear my father yell.   “Oh, sorry dad.” I say turning to him. “What did you say?” I ask, upset with myself because I hadn’t heard him.   “We better go or we are going to be late for the plane.” He says gently, and I realise he is now standing next to me and has my bags and a bag I’m guessing for himself in his hands and has a worried look on his face.   I get up and follow him out to the car and get in the front passenger seat while he puts our bags in the boot. I look out the windscreen and look at the yard and house that I grew up in, the one that I would always come home to from school.   My father gets into the car interrupting my thoughts and we set off to the academy, my dad reckons it will take us a couple of hours to get to the airport. I’m meant to be there at around seven o’clock tomorrow night. I know that it is going to be a long drive, I’m glad I have a couple of books to keep the trip less boring, that my dad gave me on my birthday last week.   My dad and I drove in silence. We already said everything that we needed to say. So I close my eyes and rested my head on the window of the car door and think about both of my dreams and wonder why one was interrupted by the other at the time, and if there is any importance to either dream.
