CHAPTER 3: AMBROSE

2301 Words
AMBROSE'S POV It was 11:30 pm and Nicolette fell asleep in my arms; passed out from our euphoric high. She may be exempt from my charms and my compulsion, but not my pheromones. I cackled to myself as I sniffed my fingers, reminiscing on her delicious aroma. I sucked my fingers and my eyes turned crimson as I yearned to taste her delicate flesh directly. She smelt so tasty. I needed to savour her, but I would wait until she was ready, until she admits she loves me. She's a human and these things took time for them. As for me, I am a vampire who had known how he felt about her the second I cast my eyes upon her. I love her in the way a puppy loves; devoted, playful, and trusting. I guess I should be ashamed of that somehow, because vampires are supposed to be ruthless, yet, I preferred to be strong; strong enough to risk being broken all over again, to love again, fully knowing my fragility. I've only known heartbreak once, but it was enough to shatter my mind, to leave my wicked soul feeling like dust in the wind and my stone-hard body unwilling to endure. But my Nicolette is worth my undead life. All that I have left is hers. I promised myself a long time ago that the one I give myself to, I would place my all in her hands. So, I gave Nicolette the power to save me or destroy me. With perfect love comes perfect trust and the knowledge that should Nicolette wish me gone, I would raise no hand in defence. Nicolette was the sky and the clouds; the gentle river and the birds that sing. I felt her in the air, longed for her touch, and craved her in a way that sent electricity to spark my mind, body, and soul if I retain one. She was my medicine; my light; my laughter and my hope. I slipped my heart into her pocket some time ago in hopes that it would stay safe and sound. I've been watching her every night since last Valentine's Day and I kept falling in love with her and each time was harder than the last. Every time the feeling got deeper, more complete, and more bewitching. There wasn't a thing I wouldn't do to keep her safe. When I met her, I'd already lost my entire world. I was hanging on to Adelaide, something so unattainable. I kept pouring love into an abyss thinking that Adelaide was the one, but I was wrong, I never loved her, not in the way I love Nicolette. There was something in those hazel eyes that is so beautiful, so safe and warm. In just one look, I was home. That first time we spoke in her dreams, I still recalled the conversation, and the feeling she gave me. She didn't know it, but that day she saved me. We became inseparable, and though not fully mated, we were one from that day on. I know the years may take their toll on our love, it was this modern life humans worked for; strived for, embraced while it destroyed them. They worked to raise a family, to love their children without bounds, and then they looked at one another with tired eyes and empty feelings at the end of the day. I am as much in love with Nicolette today as I ever was, perhaps even more so, but I am a vampire, and we never get tired. We do however get bored, but we never do with our mates. Will she grow tired of me? Will she become bored with me? If she was a vampire, I wouldn't have to worry about such frivolous things, but I couldn't turn her without the council's permission. If I did, that would be death for both of us. She rolled over in her sleep, throwing her left leg over my hips as her head laid on my chest and a willful growl rumbled from my throat. She was just so intoxicating. I placed my right palm on her back and caressed it. She snuggled up to me tighter. My heart warmed as the world stopped still on its axis. When I was in her embrace, there was no time, no wind, and no rain. I could tell her mind was at peace. I needed her to know that my love for her is Pure. Unselfish. Undemanding. Free. My manhood hardened as I felt her body press in further against mine. She was soft and warm. This was the love I'd waited for, a love that melted my icy heart with just one touch. There was no question about the colour of my eyes. My lust rose to new heights as I observed the flawless beauty. “What time is it?" Her sweet voice whispered. I checked my wristwatch and replied, “11: 35." “Dear Lord, my cousin must be wondering where I am, plus our driver will be here in less than half an hour." She spoke while rubbing the sleep from her eyes. When she didn't hear me speak again, she settled her eyes on me. Her lips parted in surprise. “Why do your eyes get red, is it because you're — umm thirsty?" Her cheeks flushed. “My eyes turn red for many reasons. Being thirsty is one of them," I told her while I traced a finger over my fang marks on her neck. “You'll need to cover this, we don't want people to get suspicious." “Ok," she grabbed a compact from her clutch and covered it as best as she could with the makeup. She hissed. “Are you in pain?" I asked guiltily. “Not really, but it stings when I touch it," she smiled. “So what other reasons do your eyes turn red?" Her innocence was such a turn-on. I lowered my eyes to my crotch, hoping she would see the reason instead of me telling her. Her eyes followed mine. “Oh, God! I didn't know _ is that because of me? I'm so sorry." She rose from the bed, blushing like the virgin she is. I'd give my immortality just to make love to her just once. But I couldn't, at least not yet. Sex brought that special addiction to us vampires. When it's not with our true life partners, If we aren't careful, it becomes an addiction to the physical act and the fantasy rather than the person. That's why most of us f**k while we fed and didn't care what our victims needed or felt. But with Nicolette, it will be different, I wouldn't be able to stop myself. She is my mate, and I'm afraid that if I ever enter her, I would pump in her for days, and she could die. I've known so many vampires who killed their human mates this way and I couldn't risk that with her, especially since I am a purebred vampire. “Don't worry about it, Love. I will be ok. So, this cousin of yours, she's the one who nicknamed me Mr Phantom?" I grinned. “Wait, you know about that?" She quirked her brow. “Yes, I was eavesdropping, I didn't mean to, though. These ears are just always tuned," I chuckled. “Ok, I have to go back downstairs now. Will you come with me?" “No, it's best we don't call attention to ourselves just yet. There are some people here who suspect I am a vampire. I don't want them to think I was feeding on an innocent." “But you were sort of feeding on an innocent," she giggled as she walked over to the bed. I was sitting at the edge. I was surprised when she climbed onto my lap. “Your eyes, they are gorgeous." She spoke with such admiration that I felt heat creeping to my cheeks. I didn't know what this feeling was. “Oh my God! Ambrose, are you blushing?" “I guess I am," I smiled. She gently placed a soft kiss on my lips and that was enough to send my body into madness. I needed more, I wanted to taste her, but she wasn't ready. “When will I see you again?" Her voice was worried as she anticipated my answer. “Do you wish to see me again, Nicolette?" I taunted her. “Of course I do, I want to see you tomorrow. Can you meet me in the Park?" “I wish I could, but I am unable to walk in the sun," I told her and her eyes almost popped out of her skull. “Oh, right. You're a vampire. What about tomorrow night?" “Yes, I will be by tomorrow night." “Good, I will be waiting," she removed her body from my lap and I instantly felt cold. “See you tomorrow, Ambrose." “Yes, I will see you tomorrow," I gave her a wink. I watched as she closed the door behind her. I felt bad that I lied to her. I wasn't going to wait to see her tomorrow. I planned on spending tonight doing what I've been doing for the past year because when the stars came out to play and the evening took on that aroma of the night; when the crickets sang for the joy of living, my thirst awakens, so I would find some poor sucker to feed on, then I would go to her window and hover while I watch her sleep. I loved how soft and delicate she looked while she slept. The quietness of her breathing gave me a sense of rest. When I watch her my thoughts would slow as a beautiful carousel, each dancing as ribbons from a kite string that reached for the sky. And if I missed her as much as I do right now, then I would enter her dreams, so we could play. I waited for the chatter and festivities to die down, and then I left for her house in the hours close to dawn. I knew it was a risk, but I had to see her. In the serenade of the black, the stars were a choir; they are lights that sing in infinite patterns. Sometimes eyes needed music, and the darker the night, the sweeter the song. The black night held me, dear, always my cloak. It was that friendly blackness that allowed my eyes to rest and let my thoughts take centre stage. A repugnant scent permeated my nose, causing me to gag in distaste. I knew that smell anywhere. Filthy and disgusting. My body went on the defence, claws sharpened to points, fangs out for blood. Out of the mist, he emerged, his claws and canines out as well. “Mason, what are you doing here?" I spat. “Ambrose, you're a hard vampire to find, and it's Alpha Mason now." His shaggy brown hair came into view. It didn't matter how much I hated werewolves, but I admit, this one was a handsome mutt. His golden-brown eyes shone with worry. I knew something must have happened for him to travel all the way from Romania to find me. “What happened?" “It's the hunters. They've wagered war upon the vampires and werewolves. They killed my father and a few others. They even slaughtered a handful of bloodsuckers. I thought you should know." “Ok, but why come here to tell me this? We are not friends." “I know, but you're the one they want." “Me! why?" “They seek the true-bred vampire and from our knowledge, you are the only one left alive," Mason stated. He was right, I was the only born vampire left alive. The rest were killed hundreds of years ago. “So what do you want me to do?" “I want you to come back with me. The vampires will listen to you, they see you as a king. Maybe if we allied, we could take on the hunters." “I don't care about vampires or werewolves, so it doesn't matter to me." “How can you say that? They will come here searching for you. If I can find you, then they can too," Mason grunted. He was right, the hunters had resources and people all over the world and if they find me here, I risk them learning I've found my mate, a human mate. I could put Nicolette in danger. They could kidnap her to get to me. “Ok, I will come with you, but give me some days to prepare myself." “You're doing the right thing, Ambrose. I will leave in three days." “Ok, and you can tell your sister she can come out now," I cackled. I smelt her before I smelt him. “Hello Ambrose," Meera laughed. Her I liked. She was sweet and pure. Quiet and shy. “Meera, it's good to see you," I hugged her. I smelt that she was still a virgin, how could that be, she is 23 years old. Shouldn't she have found her mate already? Mason found his at 18. “You too, Ambrose." “Sorry about your father, my sincerest condolences," I bowed. “Thank you. Our beta got killed too, so now I'm the beta in training." “That's wonderful." I examined as the sky turned purple. The sun was coming up. “I will meet you two at 10 pm same place two nights from now, but the dawn is here, so I'll have to go." I watched them run off into the woods. I needed to get indoors before the sunlight burns me to a crisp.
