Chapter 14: The Distance Between Us

1345 Words
--A Heart at War-- Sofia didn’t sleep that night. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling, Lily’s words playing over and over in her mind. "You’re wasting your time." Was she? Everything about Zhybrix was confusing. He protected her, yet kept her at a distance. He wanted her safe, yet refused to let her in. And now, with Lily back in the picture, Sofia didn’t know where she stood anymore. Morning came, heavy with silence. When she stepped into the main room, Zhybrix was already at the table, flipping through files, his face unreadable. He looked untouched by their conversation last night. But Sofia knew better. He was avoiding her. She sighed deeply and walked past him toward the kitchen, ignoring the way he watched her. Lorenzo stood by the counter, pouring coffee. He gave her a knowing look. “Rough night?” She forced a small smile. “Something like that.” Zhybrix’s voice cut through the air. “I’m heading out today.” Sofia turned to him. “Where?” “Business.” Lorenzo sighed. “He means he’s chasing leads. We need to figure out who’s coming after us before they get too close.” Sofia crossed her arms. “And what am I supposed to do? Just sit here and wait?” Zhybrix met her eyes. “Yes.” Her stomach twisted. She knew he was doing this to protect her. But it felt like he was shutting her out…like she was just another fragile thing he had to lock away. And that was exactly what Lily had warned her about. “I’m not a prisoner, Zhybrix.” His expression darkened. “No, but you’re not safe either.” Sofia exhaled sharply. “Maybe the real problem isn’t the people after us. Maybe the real problem is that you don’t trust me to stand by your side.” Silence. Lorenzo cleared his throat. “I’ll, uh... be in the other room.” Zhybrix didn’t move, his jaw tightening. “This isn’t about trust.” “Then what is it?” she pushed. He stood suddenly, shoving the chair back. “It’s about keeping you alive, Sofia. And if staying out of this fight is what it takes, then that’s what you’re going to do.” Sofia’s chest ached. “But what if I don’t want to stay out of it?” His hands clenched into fists, like he was holding something back. “You don’t have a choice.” And with that, he grabbed his jacket and walked out. Leaving her standing there. Feeling more alone than ever. --A Past That Won’t Stay Buried-- Hours passed. Sofia couldn’t sit still. She was done waiting, done feeling helpless. If Zhybrix thought she’d just sit around while danger closed in, he was wrong. Determined, she slipped out of the hideout and took a cab into the city. She needed answers. And if Zhybrix wouldn’t give them to her, she’d find them herself. The cafe felt like a distant memory, but she still knew the backstreets, the places where people whispered secrets. She asked around, starting small, then pushing harder. And finally, someone talked. An older man sat at the edge of a rundown alley, a cigarette between his fingers. “You’re asking about Zhybrix?” he muttered, eyeing her carefully. Sofia nodded. “Yes. I need to know about his past.” The man let out a rough chuckle. “His past is covered in blood, girl. If you’re smart, you’ll walk away now.” Her stomach tightened, but she held her ground. “Please, tell me.” The man took a slow drag of his cigarette before speaking. “Zhybrix wasn’t always like this. He had a family once. A father who ruled the underground. A mother who died too soon. And a brother… a brother who was meant to take his place. But things don’t always go as planned, do they?” Sofia’s heart pounded. “What happened to his brother?” The man flicked the ashes off his cigarette. “Murdered. Right in front of him.” Her breath caught. “Who did it?” A bitter smile crossed the man’s lips. “The same people who are after you now.” Sofia took a step back, her mind spinning. This wasn’t just business. This was personal. And suddenly, Zhybrix’s walls made sense. This wasn’t just about protecting her. This was a war he had been fighting his entire life. --A Dangerous Game-- By the time Sofia got back to the hideout, it was late. Zhybrix was already there, standing by the window, his back to her. “You left.” His voice was low. Controlled. Sofia’s hands shook at her sides, but she stood firm. “I needed answers.” He turned, his eyes dark with emotion. “You could have been killed.” “I had to understand,” she shot back. “And now I do.” Zhybrix’s jaw tightened. “You don’t know anything.” “I know about your brother.” —Silence. His face gave nothing away, but his deep and unreadable eyes betrayed him. He stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. “Who told you?” “It doesn’t matter.” His hands curled into fists. “It does.” Sofia swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Zhybrix held her gaze for a long moment. Then, finally, he spoke. “Because once you know my past, you’ll see there’s no place for you in my future.” The words hit like a punch. But she refused to back down. “Let me decide that,” she whispered. Zhybrix exhaled sharply, his guard slipping for just a second. “I’ve already lost people I loved. If I lose you too…” He stopped, shaking his head like he’d already said too much. Sofia’s heart pounded. “You won’t lose me.” He stepped back, as if distance was the only way to stay in control. “We should both get some rest,” he said, his voice empty. And just like that, he walked away. Again. Sofia clenched her fists. She didn’t know what hurt more…the danger surrounding them or the fact that Zhybrix was too afraid to fight for what was right in front of him. But she wouldn’t give up on him…not now…not ever. --A War Within-- Zhybrix shut the door behind him, leaning against it as he let out a heavy breath. His heart pounded, not from the danger outside, but because of her…Sofia. She knew. The past he had buried, the pain he had locked away, she had dragged it all back with just a few words. "I know about your brother." That name. That face. That night. The blood on the floor. The helplessness as he knelt beside his brother’s lifeless body. The rage, the grief, the need for revenge that had shaped him into the man he was now. His hands clenched. His breath was uneven. Sofia didn’t know what she was stepping into. She thought she could understand him, that she could carry the weight of his demons. But she was wrong. She wasn’t meant for this life. She wasn’t meant for him. Because if he let himself want her…truly want her, he’d only be leading her into danger. Just like before. His fingers trembled slightly as he ran a hand over his face. He had spent years in the shadows, building walls no one could break through. But Sofia…she didn’t climb his walls. She walked straight through them. And that terrified him. Because the more he pushed her away, the more he wanted to pull her close. "Let me decide that," she had said. Zhybrix let out a quiet, bitter chuckle. If only it were that simple. Because the truth was, she had already decided. And he was losing the fight to stay away from her. The war outside was dangerous. But the war inside him? That was worse. And he wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep fighting it.
