Chapter 4: The Line Between Us

-- A Familiar Presence -- Zhybrix had become used to going to the cafe. Though he knew better, he told himself it was merely a place to relax. The coffee wasn't the cause. Sofia was the one. There was something odd about her. She was neither afraid nor intrigued in his authority, unlike those he typically interacted with, who either feared him or wanted something from him. To her, he was simply a man. And that was risky. He arrived earlier than usual that morning. Sofia looked up from the counter and smiled as soon as he entered. "You’re back again. Should I just reserve a table for you every day?" she asked. Zhybrix grinned. "Maybe." As she brewed his coffee, Sofia laughed. "You know, for someone who seems so serious all the time, you sure spend a lot of mornings here." Zhybrix observed her work while leaning against the counter. "Maybe I just like the coffee." She raised an eyebrow as she handed him the cup. "Or maybe you just like annoying me." He shook his head and let out a rare laugh. "Maybe." Sofia folded her arms. "You don’t talk much, but when you do, it’s always vague. Do you ever answer questions properly?" His black eyes studied her as he tilted his head slightly. "I answer when I need to." She gave an eye roll. "And I bet you decide when that is, huh?" "Exactly." She let out a loud sigh. "Must be nice being mysterious." Zhybrix's lips quirked with laughter as he sipped his coffee. "It has its perks." Silence fell between them for a minute, comfortable but filled with an unspoken curiosity. The silence was broken by Sofia. "You don’t belong in a place like this." Zhybrix's smile dimmed a bit. "And why is that?" She paused before responding. "You just… have that look. Like you’re from somewhere else. A different world." After examining her for a while, he put down his cup. "And yet, here I am." Sofia was unsure of how to respond to that. She didn't want him to go yet, though, for some reason. Sofia found herself anticipating his coming the following morning. There was something about Zhybrix that she found fascinating, even though she would never openly acknowledge it. And sure enough, he arrived. Instead of placing his order right away, he leaned against the counter and gave her a quick glance. "You’re always here. Do you ever take a break?" Sofia grinned. "Says the guy who’s here every day." He made a quiet laugh. "Good point." Before giving him his coffee, she poured it and asked, "So what do you actually do, Zhybrix?" Something darkened in his eyes, but his face remained the same. "I run a business." Sofia arched an eyebrow. "A business, huh? Sounds vague. What kind of business?" Their fingers briefly touched as he removed the coffee from her hands. "The kind you don’t need to know about." Sofia laughed instead of being intimidated. "See? Vague again. One of these days, I’ll get a straight answer from you." Zhybrix grinned. "Good luck with that." Amused, she shook her head. "One day, you’ll slip and actually tell me something real." For the first time in a long time, he felt himself grinning as he left. And that was risky. -- A Warning from the Shadows -- A little later in the evening, Lorenzo sighed from the passenger seat as Zhybrix sat in the car outside of an abandoned warehouse. "Boss, I need to ask… why do you keep going to that café?" Zhybrix took a while to reply. He was aware that Lorenzo was observing him intently. "It’s quiet there," he said at last. Lorenzo made a snort. "Quiet? That’s not the real reason." Zhybrix threw him a look that was impossible to read. "What do you think the reason is?" "You don't let people get close. That's who you are," Lorenzo said when he paused, "but you're going there almost every day now. It's not just for coffee." Zhybrix avoided his gaze and gripped the driving wheel. He hated being asked questions. since Lorenzo was right. His phone buzzed before he could respond. A message from an unknown number. "Stay away from the girl. Or she will get hurt." Zhybrix gripped the phone more tightly. Lorenzo muttered a groan when he noticed the message over his shoulder. "Boss, this isn’t good." Zhybrix's face grew serious. "I know." He became aware for the first time that he had already endangered Sofia simply by being close to her. What's the worst? He wasn't certain that he could avoid it. Zhybrix's jaw tightened as he stared at the message. The message sounded like a challenge, a direct attack on his authority. He would not back down. He would not let anyone hurt her. He looked at the phone in his hand. He didn't know who sent it, but he needed to take it seriously. It was a clear warning, pointed at her. Lorenzo said, "We need to be careful," in a worried tone. "They're serious about this." With a racing mind, Zhybrix nodded. He needed to keep Sofia safe, but how? He couldn't simply tell her to keep away from him. That would not solve the problem. To protect her from being exposed to his world, he had to figure out how to get rid of the threat. He had a plan—a calculated, dangerous plan that called for a delicate balance between influence and force. This was a game, he knew. And he had to play it well. However, this time the consequences are higher, it is personal. He needs to act quickly. Zhybrix threw a glance at the rearview mirror, his eyes catching Lorenzo’s worried gaze. "Find out who sent that message," he commanded, his voice sharp and urgent. "And make sure they understand the consequences of messing with me." Lorenzo nodded, his face grim. He knew better than to question the boss's intentions. Zhybrix is a man who move in shadows, who deal with threats in his own way. Zhybrix drove, his mind racing. He knew the Ramirez family had been gaining ground. They are ambitious, ruthless, and they are desperate for control. They had been pushing him, testing his boundaries. But now, they had crossed a line. They had threatened Sofia. He would not let them get away with it. As he drove, he couldn’t shake the image of Sofia’s smile, her warmth, her vulnerability. It was that vulnerability that made him determined to protect her. It was that vulnerability that made him question his own feelings, a confusing mix of anger and protectiveness. It is a dangerous game, but he would not let her be hurt.
