Chapter 5: The Edge of Danger

-- Unspoken Tensions -- When Zhybrix entered the cafe the next morning, his usual confidence seemed a little shaky. The message about Sofia had been on his mind all night. Keep him away. That was the sensible decision to take action. But the burst of emotions brewing inside him was too strong for reason. Behind the counter, Sofia greeted customers with her usual affection. Her cheeks brightened at the sight of him. As she reached for a cup, she teased, "Black coffee, right?" He nodded but took a moment to answer. She wondered at his stillness. "Everything okay?" she asked, her eyes glimmering with worry. Zhybrix paused. He wanted to warn her and tell her that it would be a mistake to bring her into his world. Rather, he settled himself with "Just a rough night." Sofia studied him while leaning against the counter. "You know, you always look like you’re carrying the weight of the world." He grinned. "Maybe I am." "Sounds exhausting." "It is." They were silent for a moment. Although there was background noise in the cafe, there was a silence between them and a mutual understanding that neither of them could fully express. The silence was finally broken by Sofia. "Well, if you ever need a break from… whatever it is you do, you know where to find me." Zhybrix sensed a change within himself. Perhaps he shouldn't be here at all. But he didn't want to be anywhere else at that moment. ———————————————————— Zhybrix's phone buzzed once more that night when he was driving through the city. One more unidentified number. Another concern. "You didn't listen. It was a mistake.” He gripped the wheel more tightly. Whoever was responsible was keeping a tight eye on him. Lorenzo looked at the message while seated in the passenger seat. "They’re getting bolder." Zhybrix's voice sounded cold: "Let them." "If they touch her, they’ll regret it." Lorenzo let out a breath. "Then you should decide now, Boss. Are you staying in her life, or walking away?" Zhybrix took a while to respond. He had spent years avoiding emotions and making choices that would guarantee his survival. But now that Sofia was around, nothing felt easy. Some of his men were waiting for him when he pulled into one of his warehouses. The air was tense. Lorenzo went out first, looking around. Zhybrix followed Raul, one of his men, came forward and said, "Boss, you need to hear this." "We received a message. It’s about the girl." Zhybrix tightened her jaw. "Tell me everything." Raul handed him a phone that had a recording on it. A voice came through the speakers, distorted. "She doesn’t belong in his world. She’s a weakness. And weaknesses need to be eliminated." There was a dreadful silence. Something twisted sharply inside Zhybrix. It was now a promise rather than merely a threat. Lorenzo's face became serious. "We need to deal with this before they make a move." Zhybrix's thoughts were racing as he glanced at the phone. If Sofia was in danger because of him, there was only one thing to do. He needed to track down the sender of that message. And end this before it was too late. ———————————————————— Back at the cafe, Sofia was finishing up for the evening. Her nerves were calmed by the usual routine, so she hummed gently while cleaning the counters. However, a spooky sensation persisted in her chest, like a shadow invading on the boundaries of her reality. She looked out. With the exception of a few late-night wanderers, the streets were completely empty. She saw something, or someone, standing across the street as she switched out the lights. A figure dressed in dark clothing, stood still. Observing. She gasped. She briefly believed that it might be Zhybrix, but the posture seemed off. It was more serious and colder. She snatched up her purse and locked up, shaking off the discomfort. However, she couldn't get rid of the sensation that she wasn't alone as she strolled along the street. With her heart racing in her chest, Sofia walked swiftly. Despite the silence, the city didn't feel secure. She sensed that she wasn't alone and that someone was observing her. She sped up as she turned a corner, attempting to get rid of the uneasy feeling. However, it held on to her like a shadow, giving as constant warning of the danger she was in. When she reached her apartment complex, she struggled to find her keys and unlocked the door. Pulling the curtains closed and locking the door behind her, she hurried inside to keep out the outside world. As she stood there, she listened for any noise or warning sign. However, she could only hear the quiet, which was far harder to bear than usual city noises. She was stuck in a world that wasn't her own anymore. What she was scared of was unclear to her. Was it true? Was she simply using her imagination? She had no idea what was going on, but she couldn't get rid of the feeling that something wasn't right. To get the thoughts out of her head, she shook her head. Most likely, she was simply being affected by the city. Even the quiet felt heavy since it was always so noisy and energetic. She went to the kitchen, filled a glass with water, and inhaled deeply. She felt somewhat calmed by the cool sensation of the water against her lips. She took a glance out the window. In the night, the city lights sparkled with amazement and uncertainty. It was simple to lose yourself in the rhythm of the city and allow it into your dreams and thoughts. Maybe that was what was going on with her. Maybe she was simply allowing the tension of the city to sink into her. She forced herself to look at the ordinary as she turned away from the window. She entered the bathroom, brushed her teeth, and splashed water on her face. She looked in the mirror, trying to see if anything was different, if any fear was reflected back at her. But she just saw the same tired face, the same weary eyes. Pulling the blankets up to her chin, she climbed into bed. She had to ignore these ideas. It would be a fresh day tomorrow. She would return to her coffee shop tomorrow, where she would be surrounded by the cozy scent of cinnamon and coffee, as well as the cheerful conversation of her customers. In the hope to put out the darkness and stop the whispers of fear, she closed her eyes. It wouldn't be simple, but she would try. *********************** Zhybrix had made a self-promise to keep her out of his world. What if she was in it already, though? The man with a hood took out a phone as Sofia vanished around the corner. He sent a message. She is by herself. Now what?" The reaction was fast. "Wait for the cue." The night seemed not yet ended.
