-- A Growing Threat --
The neon lights of the city flashed against the huge glass windows as Zhybrix sat in his dimly lighted office. He repeatedly replayed the phrase in his head while tapping his fingers on his desk.
She is not a part of his world. She is weak. Besides, weaknesses should be taken out.
He clenched his fingers. The person who sent the message had just made their first mistake, threatening someone he cared about and had become involved in a risky game.
Lorenzo folded his arms and rested against the wall. "Boss, we have to move soon. They are getting closer to chasing her the longer we wait."
Zhybrix breathed deeply. "The number of people observing the cafe should be reinforced. I always want eyes on Sofia. I'd like to know if somebody even glances in her direction badly."
Lorenzo gave a nod. "And if she begins to ask?"
Zhybrix's jaw tightened. "After that, we deal with it. However, we don't inform her of the true extent of danger she faces."
As soon as he realized he was attracted to her, he would have left. However, it was now too late.
-- A Moment of Truth --
Sofia had had a busier than normal shift at the cafe. The tiny room was filled with the sounds of customers talking, and the aroma of warm pastries and freshly prepared espresso filled the air. However, something felt off.
She occasionally saw glimpses of faces she didn't recognize, males seated at the tables in the corners, their eyes lingering a moment too long.
The feeling of unease left her. Maybe she was just having strange visions.
Her heart skipped when the bell above the door jingled. Zhybrix. Wearing his usual dark clothes, he entered with a calm authority. But he had a different look in his eyes today. There's a storm rumbling underneath.
She tried to smile. "Getting back for another black coffee?"
He smiled slightly. "That kind of thing."
She could feel his eyes on her as she made his drink. Studying, instead of just observing. The cup was set on the counter by her. "You seem to have not slept."
He let out a breath. "It's been a long evening."
After a moment of doubt, she said, "Is everything alright?"
He should have uttered a lie. I should have assured her that everything was alright. However, he found himself responding, "Not really," instead.
Sofia leaned a little closer. "Would you like to discuss it?"
Zhybrix gazed at her, torn between the world she represented and the one he lived in. "No matter how hard you try to escape problems, do you ever feel like it follows you?"
She bent her head in consideration. “In my opinion, everyone faces difficulties of some type. However, we don't have to deal with it alone."
He shook his head and chuckled quietly. "Sofia, you are too good for this city."
She gave a quiet smile. "So maybe you should look at the city the way I do."
————————————————————
As the night rolled on, Zhybrix's men watched Sofia's cafe closely. However, a mistake had already been made in spite of their presence.
Someone was observing from the shadows across the street. A man talking into a phone while wearing a hooded jacket.
He is with her. He is weakening his guard.
A pause. Then the answer came.
"Then, let's remind him that he is incapable of having weaknesses."
After then, the order was made.
Everything was about going differently that night.
Sofia's breath caught in her throat as she turned around. The weak streetlamp light hid the silhouette of a man standing in the shadows. Her heart thumping, she stood still.
He moved forward, a hooded jacket casting shadows across his face. His piercing, dark eyes locked with hers. With a sense of purpose in his stride, he approached her without saying anything.
A wave of fear swept through Sofia. Her first choice was to scream, to run, to seek for help. However, she was stopped by an odd feeling of fear and an urge that she should not run.
A few steps away, he came to a stop, his eyes fixed on her. "You should be careful."
Her spine felt warm at the threat in his words, which came out in a low whisper.
Then he turned and vanished back into the darkness without saying another word.
Sofia's body was shaking as she stood there, her breath stopping in her throat. She was relieved that he had not harmed her, but she had no idea who he was or what he wanted. She kept getting an idea that she was being watched and that she was stepping into an unfamiliar environment.
Sofia stood motionless as her mind raced to figure out what had just happened, her heart thumping in her chest. Suddenly, the air felt heavier and colder around her. She reached for her phone, her fingers trembling a little, but she hesitated. Who would she even give a call to? The police? Zhybrix?
When she considered informing Zhybrix, her stomach turned. All day, he had been behaving oddly—more protective but yet more cold. She had unknowingly put herself in the way of something that was happening—something more than herself.
She made herself move by shaking her head, picking up her pace as she made her way to her apartment. Every sound was clearer, every shadow seemed deeper. The normally busy and lively city now appeared strangely silent.
When she arrived at her building, she looked over her shoulder and hesitated before going inside. Did he stay around? Observing? She relived the encounter with the hooded man, his warning echoing in her ears.
She locked the door behind her as she finally entered. With a trembling breath, she pushed her back against it. Even though the space was familiar and little, it felt heavy instead of comforting. Carefully, she parted the curtain and walked to the window.
There was nobody on the street below. He was nowhere to be seen.
She took a deep breath and pushed the fear away. It might not have been anything. Maybe she was just thinking too much.
